This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos!
Thanks for covering this Priya, I've done neuromuscular dentistry and it has helped tremendously with the orthodic but unfortunately I need a permanent solution which requires crowns and it's sooo expensive. It comes to a cost equivalent of a car/suv - with no guarantees it will reduce my symptoms enough to justify the cost. I AM considering it because while I wear the orthodic I get relief so I would love to have that permanent alignment but it's a HUGE financial investment with little to no insurance coverage. Super disappointing that the majority of insurance companies turn a blind eye to TMJ and deem it cosmetic and experimental. Anyway, thank you for all you do and these videos. I highly recommend neuromuscular dentistry, it has helped me and I was blessed with a very methodical and caring TMJ Dentist who had been doing this for decades.
thank you for sharing your experience!
Mark, I’m looking at the same situation long term. They’re basically going to have to rebuild every crown on my lower palate. Major $$$. Insurance will only pay for jaw surgery, and that’s not going to solve my problem. It’s insane that insurance only considers this stuff "cosmetic." I don’t care at this point. If it solves my issues I’ll do it. Wonder if we’re seeing the same dentist…
@@jenniferhankinson1910 If your orthodic from the nueromuscular dentist helps you get a good amount of relief - the next phase is to have the jaw in that position permanently. The cost is def ridiculous, I could buy a new car instead. It's likely if the jaw is in that optimal position all the time (crowns) it would help much more than just temporarily wearing the orthodic. I don't blame the dentists, 99% of the dentists I've met are super caring and they're always small businesses, it's these big insurance companies that have lawyers on staff that know how to word policies to not cover these high costs procedures and classify them with no research or objectivity to back up these decisions. Big business is not our friends, they're looking out for shareholders and profit statements. Bottom line. I believe things will get better, I hope you can find a solution that means not living in chronic pain. If you have to take out a loan it could be worth it depending on your symptoms. I would get a long term loan then always pay more than minimum - then if something happens you have flexibility you can then pay the minimum and go back to paying more than minimum when you're able to.
@@Mark-ql5ni I know. Insurance is a complete racket. Who on earth decided that dental care isn’t healthcare???
Just received my orthotic, so the journey begins. We’ll see how this goes.
@@jenniferhankinson1910 did they take an MRI, CBCT and EMG scan before giving you the orthotic? Or did they just take the impression of your teeth with the mould that they typically do?
Had my first visit with ICCMO dentist last week. Had to travel 12 hours from current home to find one. Had all the tests with the equipment you described. WOW! I am in bad, bad shape. First orthotic should arrive in two weeks. My journey begins. I’m hopeful…
I'm so happy you found someone!
Well, the good news is that this dentist is only 15 minutes from the new home we’re building in FL. Divine intervention I think. She told me she sees patients from the surrounding 8 states and even one from Europe. Just got orthotic today, so the journey begins. Thanks for all you do.❤️
@@jenniferhankinson1910 do you mind sharing who you are seeing?
@@theTMJdoc Sure! Dr. Stephanie Kinsey at Palencia Dental in St. Augustine, FL.
@@jenniferhankinson1910 thank you!!! Please do keep me posted on how treatment goes for you 🙏🏼💝
Thank you Doctor, you are a savior for tmd patients like me.. do you have any provider suggestion at miami?
Dr Robert Murdocco is a great TMJ Physical Therapist in Miami Beach!
Other than the pain can this fix my asymmetrical face?..
It really depends on what’s causing the asymmetry. I can’t answer your question over the internet and without examining you 😊🙏🏼
@@theTMJdoc My dentist did say its because of tmd, other jaw joint is placed on a lower position making my face longer and one sided...

What if i have full arch bridge that is misaligned and i tried a splint nothing is working what do you 😊

Madam tmj cause cheeks pain like inflamation type of pain??
yes it can.
Doctor, i am in need of suggestion please, i went to a neuromuscular dentist and first the dr said they will do cbct and then do neuromuscular analysis and orthotic but when i went for cbct review , dr said we can bypass neuromuscular part and go to phase 2 with palate expander and braces as my jaw is narrow. Is it possible? Can we get treated without phase 2? I have disc displacement . Iam so confused and not sure if i can go forward.

Hello! What is good to relax the muscles around the eustation tube?!
The only way I know how to do this is with an orthotic :)
@@theTMJdoc hey! Thanks you are a great doctor! I have learned so much. I’m 29 and been dealing this for 2 years the whole time I was pregnant in 2020 with my 3rd baby. What do you think about local anesthetics for a temporary added relief. I am in PT and have gotten Botox. I have been almost miserable as I have 3 children and a husband and this has affected my whole life. I have a pain management appointment Friday and probably Atlanta ga is my closest tmj doc. I live in mountains about 2 hours from atl and we are so rural that we don’t have a good tmj specialist. I am hoping to get local anesthetics Friday am to keep relieving me from all of the symptoms you mentioned. I am self diagnosed and have done all the work myself with making the doctor refer me wherever I need to go. Some doctors are so poor at what they do and it’s frustrating. Thank you so much for your effort here sharing knowledge and giving people an understanding. You are so beautiful by the way. Thanks!
Hi Priya thank you for the information on your channel, the pain relief videos are particularly helpful. I saw on another video that you know of good TMJ specialists in the Miami area? Could I find out who those are?
Dr. Robert Murdocco is a very skilled TMJ Physical Therapist in Miami and likely the best in the nation. He will be able to help you and point you in the right direction in terms of a TMJ dentist.
Hi I'm from Miami too did u find a good TMJ doctor?
What is the device you have on in the photo that pops up in YT? I didn’t see it in the video.
That's the jaw tracking technology used with the neuromuscular dentistry protocol.
I don’t have the ICCMO specialist in my area. Can you locate the nearest dentist in my area? I live in Connecticut.
I'm sorry I don't know anyone there.
Hi doctor,
Thanks for your useful information. I have a question about my condition. I have teeth irregularities which I think have been a major factor leading to my TMJ, but unfortunately there is no dentist in my country with specialty in TMJ to confirm this. So what's the best I can do? Go ahead and get orthodontia hoping it helps with my TMJ and, keep doing physical exercises or avoid fixing my teeth irregularities until I find someone who knows about TMJ?
Braces can often make tmjd worse so I never recommend that as a first option..
Can you recommend a neuromuscular dentist in the Austin area please?
I'm sorry I don't know anyone there.
Is there any risk to neuromuscular dentistry? I’ve thinking of trying but I’ve run across reports that it’s not reliable and could make your pain worse. How do you know if neuromuscular dentistry will work for you?
The good thing with neuromuscular orthotic therapy is that it’s reversible if done in an in aggressive way
Hi doc
Is a tmj specialist and neuro mascular dentist the same? I don know who to go to
Not necessarily! This is a complicated question that I cannot easily answer via text/comments. If you’d like you can email my office to set up a zoom meeting with me - patientcare@tmjdentaldoc.com
Is it possible to correct the bite and/or solve TMJ problems without the use of orthodontics?
I've already had orthodontics, I had both overjet and deep bite, it is way better now but not completely corrected. I started with TMJ problems a while ago and now I'm starting treatment but I really don't want to use braces again...
Yes, it is possible to treat TMJD without orthodontics. But it has to be done a specific way.
@@theTMJdoc Could you make a video about how a general TMJ check up process should be, so people from other countries know what to look up at and what to expect from a TMJ doc? I really like your content, It would be nice to have more TMJ docs like you everywhere
Hi I got tmj the first day I got braces I spoke to the orthodontist about it and she said it was normal for people my age, I got my braces of 11 months ago now and it’s gone from popping to headaches what do I do?
I'm sorry to hear that but I cannot make recommendations over the internet and without examining you in person.
Have you had premolars extracted?
Yes! How did you know?
@@theTMJdoc I could see when you opened your mouth in this video to show your upper and lower dental arches. I had premolar extraction orthodontics as a child, and now have TMJD. Some dentists I have seen in the UK who treat the TMJ, suggest my dental arches need expanding to the size they would have been without the premolar extractions, in order to treat my TMJ, by creating more tongue space. They aren't just suggesting to correct the relationship position of my lower arch to my upper arch, as you describe in the video. I am not sure what to believe makes more sense as a way to treat the TMJ.
@@keren1126 it’s tricky because there are a lot of options that could work and a lot of factors that make one way better for one person and another way better for the next person
@@theTMJdoc Do u regret having them extracted? Im asking because I have had 2 premolars extracted for braces and Im stopping my treatment midway because it worsened my tmd (I wasnt aware I had it but realised that something was wrong during ,y orthodontix tratment). Now Im thinking of getting implants instead.
Also ur facial growth looks so good despite having premolards extracted, It makes me feel better to see that nbecause I was so worried it will eventually ruin my facial profile
Hi Doc! I wanna thank you for this great youtube channe.
I'm on lexapro, and i have severe night clenching, i've tried couple types of splint and they have made things worse. I was diagnosed with disc displacement with reduction and thing are getting worse day by day.
The chief complains are headaches and pain and spasms in my neck and facial mucsles, my question is, what splint should i use to manage the excrutiating pain caused by clenching?
Is there kinda splint can protect my TMJ from clenching and treat the displacement at the same time?
What about stabilization splint?
Thanks in advance🙏
It's not so much the type of splint, it's more about the prescription built into the splint/orthotic.
I had NMD treatment in 2021, and strove with it to get relief from nighttime teeth clenching for over a year. Now, I still clench at night ON the orthotic, which is more painful than clenching on my teeth. Do NMD practitioners make occlusal guards that keep the majority of teeth (especially the larger molars) from clenching at night, while still achieving NMD (muscle-calming) results? I need to do something to protect my teeth from cracking, and to prevent the tremendous daily pain in my jaw. Thanks in advance for any info you may provide.
There is no appliance that I’m aware of that will stop you from clenching your teeth.
Exactly, so my question is: Do NMD practitioners make occlusal guards that keep the majority of teeth (especially the larger molars) from clenching at night, while still achieving NMD (muscle-calming) results? @theTMJdoc
@@dropofthesea6802 no there is not such a thing that I’m aware of.
@@theTMJdoc Thank you for your responses!
@@dropofthesea6802 you’re welcome.
Can you explain the procedure of an arthrocentesis? I will soon be having this done. My Oral surgeon has told me that I will be put to sleep during the procedure. However this is only after many reg dr visits, dentist visits, chiropractic visits and also ENT visits and I am still in excruciating pain. I also have Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid as well. Do you see people with auto immune diseases that TMJ has really affected such as myself?
Yes people with autoimmune disorders will tend to have TMJD more often than those without autoimmune disorders. As for arthrocentesis, I don't do it so it's best to ask an oral surgeon more about it.
Dr. are you a neuromuscular doctor? or conventional ? there are few philosophies between dentist - example some believe in centric relation and others doesnt ! is very difficult to trust a dentist in these days that everything is about money !
I'm a general dentist who focuses on taking care of people with TMJD. I use the neuromuscular philosophy.
