  • Eric shares the steps he used to turn a block of wood into a finished bonsai stand! He plans to use this stand as part of an exhibit at the Pacific Bonsai Expo in November 2022.
00:00:34 Eric references a Kokofu album with a photo of a root stand for a semi-cascade tree, that he wanted to recreate.
00:01:41 He's determined that this style is created through carving out from of larger piece of wood. The goal is to match the visual weight of the stand or slab to the visual weight of the tree.
00:02:30 After procuring the block of Monterey Cypress, Eric cured the wood to minimize cracking.
00:03:37 Eric used a chainsaw to strip the bark and make vertical channels in the wood block.
00:04:11 Arbortech grinder used to accentuate the initial channels. Also a regular hand drill to drill long holes to clear out wood in center.
00:05:53 Switch to a die grinder (which Eric initially misnamed as an angle grinder) and special bit from the UK (find it on Harry Harrington's website, bonsaiforme.com)
00:06:58 Next, Eric switches to Foredom and finishing bits.
00:07:41 From there, more laborious and hand work begins. Die grinder with wire wheel.
00:09:20 80 grit dremel flat wheels to smooth out more of the tool marks in he wood. Then Eric uses sandpaper.
00:10:42 Ready to stain! Eric discusses the qualities of Monterey Cypress wood.
    00:13:00 Black stain in action.
00:14:20 What do you think? This stand is now available for sale! www.bonsaify.c...

I think it makes a lot of sense they are made the same way you did, they are more artistic representation of roots than roots itself

Fantastic piece of craftmanship worthy of a great bonsai. I used to do a lot of woodturning, and I suspect that the easiest way would be to remove most of the material when the wood is completely green. Oak for example is really soft when green and could be easily carved, then it could be set aside to dry. Then a year or two later, it could be finished. This approach would also help with the cracking of the wood. If you ever do another, the best way to avoid those cracks appearing is to remove the heart wood from the center as soon as you get the wood, as well as sealing it as you did.
Also, (I know I'm going on a bit here) but in an ideal world, you would use a piece of wood that doesn't contain any heartwood at all. Obviously, that would have to be sourced from a large tree as the whole piece would have to be taken out of just one side of the trunk, but if you're investing that much time into a piece, it's probably worth speaking to a local tree surgeon who would be able to help.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

Wow Amazing. Knowing what is involved in just plain deadwood carving on a tree I salute you mate. Fantastic job and the hours that go into this and any bonsai related carving is definitely a Labour of love.
Please slap the first person that offers you less than 300 for this 🤣
    Well done fine sir 👍

Like you, I taught myself to make these, for the same reasons, and use many of the techniques you used. I have since taught my way of making these to bonsai clubs around the country, mostly Florida.

Impressive!. I've carved a duck head for a walking stick so appreciate the work involved. I am hoping to carve a bonsai tree top for a walking stick this winter, wish me luck. Xx

I make bonsai stands for mainly shohin and sometimes mame. I have some bigger ones but they are a work in progress. i also made a small shohin stand of monterey cypress but it sold already. I build my stands to the piece so all are very original. I am only leaving a comment for bonsaify and will not be shamelessly plug in my new buisness on someone else's video (not cool) love your work. (really like your video's on mame :) )

really nice work. I'd have put some pore sealer to reduce the amount of work and improve stain homogeneity. Good luck!!!!

How long did it take to complete?
Most people have no idea time it takes.
    Looks great!

Well, probably 30-40 hours across 3 weeks or so. I lost count but it took a long time. I actually messed up filming the intro twice, which is why there was little footage of the earlier stages.

@@Bonsaify Yeah! like I was saying most people have no idea how labour intensive this can be.
Throdlle pedal is a game change. I found the hard way that die grinder slipping out your hand can be intense experience.

I was thinking of building a structure with wire and then filling it with plastiform (😊epoxy+wood dust)

It's hard to say whether the piece is better tan or black, I think it should be lacquered though. However, I definitely wouldn't give up the day job though HEY???
