Bonsaify | Repot or Not? Midseason Health Check on 3 Older Bonsai

  • Eric recently acquired three trees that have a common problem: they're root-bound. It's early September in Northern California, so not a good time to do a full repot. But it may be more dangerous for these trees if Eric does nothing. Watch to learn his solution for each tree!
00:01:46 First up is a nice old European field Elm. The pot its currently in is part of Eric's decision making process to repot without root work.
00:02:56 The tree is out of the pot! Root examination - they look healthy.
00:03:42 Eric walks through potting, soil mix, tying tree into pot.
00:05:58 The second tree is a Redwood with lots of suckers. Eric chooses to do a careful repot on this tree as well, to give it fresh soil and ensure it receives extra water.
00:07:58 The third tree is a Ficus. It's a nice old plant with interesting characteristics. This tree will go through a full repot with root work, which is ok to do because it's a tropical species and it's been unusually warm in NorCal.
00:09:09 Close-up of why Eric doesn't like the soil the tree came to him in and why he's going to use akadama.
00:11:00 What do you think of the results of the full repot? Let us know in the comments below!

Those are nice looking trees for starters and I’m sure that bye this time next year they will be happy and beautiful. Like your video’s ,your technical skills in the way you are analyzing shape and form. Thank you for all you do to help us who are not so experienced or talented in the field of Bonsai.

Appreciate your approach and being honest with the needs of trees that need recovery time thru slip-potting, re-potting and an appropriate soil mix. 👍

That field elm is looking great, I can tell you field elms are hard to kill (at least here in Germany) and they grow very vigorous… I don’t want to exaggerate to much but mine is trimmed back about 5 times per season because it produces so many flushes of growth ! Thanks for the content.

I just checked the rootball today and it's got roots coming out all over the place since I did this repot. The leaves still look bad, but if the roots are happy it wont matter!

Enjoy your videos. I moved from San Jose to Merced area. All the Silicon Valley nurseries I knew shut down. Where is a decent nursery? I have not been to big tree shop in Gilroy but wonder if you know any out here?

Actually, I think there is more going on down in Fresno / Visalia area than in San Jose or Gilroy. Round Valley Nursery is one that comes to mind - but I'm not sure he's doing retail...perhaps. Also - in October in Santa Nella there is the GSBF rendezvous. Or come to the Pacific Expo Nov 12-13th in Oakland!

how to do you ensure the water penetrating the compacted root ball? I imagine very little will go there, while having a free draining substrate around it. Immersion?

It being under a layer of soil keeps it from drying as quickly. But this is a stop gap measure. The tree will be repotted in about 4 months properly. Meanwhile the roots running through the fresh soil will increase the metabolism of the tree.
