Insert "coir lovers" here.
i'm not totally sure what he means by coir lovers. is there maybe a different code for them?
@@kannix386raised to the 3rd power
@@kannix386 He means coco-coir. Look that up.
I love your style, insertions and the edits with no pretense and not wasting your time making it “perfecto”
truly thank you for ending the branding fetish trendsters
The more I learn the more I agree with you. You don't need all the additives they make things more likely to go sideways. That being said I do still throw a handful of gypsum in my grain when I'm soaking it overnight. In my opinion it helps the grains not stick together
dude I love how critical you are of the standard. brilliant
Thank you 😊
Yo Metta! love your videos dude
So so interesting. Thank you Sage. The forest was beautiful!
Thank you Kit! I wish I still had the original file, the resolution was so much better but glad you enjoyed :)
I’m new at growing working on my first now and I want to thank you for your content. It’s helped me a lot. Thanks
✌️
The forest you walk through looks somewhat magical with those beautiful Ferns everywhere.
It is! Wish I was there!
Great info. Your editing is almost unrecognizable.. lol
Happy almost new year..
Glad to hear that! Thanks you too!
Just from my personal experience, I find that manure based sub colonizes faster and produces better fruits than CVG. I haven't tried coir as a stand alone sub. I'll continue to experiment but currently I feel manure is better. Seems like all things are moving to easier, like e-biking...
Good info thanks pal ...Regarding coffee absolutely stay away from it !!!!! I use it in my garden to break up and refresh old soil its a magnet for trich that is why I use it for my soils . Top channel 👍
Thank you 😊
Nice. Knowledge is power.
💯
Verm adds moisture holding capacity to coir. If you measure the moisture content you'll find it's higher.
I’m using manure based sub this grow and it’s colonizing super fast. Here’s to hoping it stays contam free.
🤞
every time you do the COIR LOVERS I just die laughing! You live in absolute paradise!
😂
Thank you for putting time into this

I did as you asked and I wore gloves. 😂😂

Thank you, love new info . Makes sense. I will try just coir on my next tub, would love to get more than one fruiting cycle.
I’m on my first tub grow def gonna keep the coir info on hand for my next grow.
6:18 This brightened my day. Thank you for this.
Glad to hear that :)
So I'm venturing into the hobby and I'm left super curious about one thing....I've got a table top composter that turns kitchen scraps into soil in a matter of hours. It's amazing for plants. Left wondering if you could replace manure with this kitchen scrap soil compost? NOBODY is talking about it, could be a good video topic. Thanks for all you do!
have you tried it ? and if so how did it go?
I’ve been using just coir for a while and it works just fine for me, great pinsets, and never contam. I just use about 50/50 spawn to substrate, don’t skimp, it’s fast and the grain itself has plenty of nutrition for the mycelium and mushrooms.
I’m all about coir as well, although I like to at least go for a 1:2 ratio especially for coir lovers. Thanks for the comment!
New to growing. Just so I'm clear, when going to monotub, just mix grain spawn and pasteurised coco coir in equal parts. No verm, no gip,
That’s all I do yep, just coco coir. @@RS-uw2zm
I want to have a test done on some clones and see if there is a potency difference in nutritious vs non
For chicken manure, i find if you properly compost it and age it, then it'll be similar to most other manures
This is a question I've been asking more and more lately
Excellent subject and always good to see your 4k nature walks. Thank you. Though I am a little confused concerning straight coir and not contaminating. My understanding is that to avoid trich, it's a good idea to add things to the coir that change the ph level, discouraging trich. Would you say this is correct or a misunderstanding?
With clean spawn coir should not trich out as there’s nothing for the trich to eat. If you do have trich problems though (I.e. a large amount of trich spores floating around your home), then gypsum does help, and even adding a little pickling lime also
can you mix dung (sterilized/pastuerized) and coir as the substrate? And, I think you answered this...but do you need to sterilize/pasteurize coir? Thanks
Thanks for the knowledge ❤
Didn't realize coir was the key until watching you Sage
This is so interesting! I’m trying coir but using my hydroponics nutrients. I use it to hydrate my coir then squeeze to field capacity.
How did that work out for you?
what if you sterilize the coffee vs just pasteurize it? i work in a coffee shop, and have access to a lot of free grounds
What are the best coir loving strains?
Great video! Have you done any potency tests? Willy myco says he gets more potency with the additives in the coir.
Please provide more info
@cinderblue3251 nope secrets are secrets..... jk, look up "willy myco" first off. But coir isn't nutritional so adding some will increase potency. (Mine bruise almost black)
exactly what I came to the comments wondering about. my non-scientific, non-experienced, non-trained ability reason suggests to me a nutritious substrate would produce a more potent fruit.
Is there a list of strains and what their best grow medium consists of?
I need that too
VERY helpful, thx Man! 🙌🏻
i use a CVG 95% 5% DVG have great yeilds
im in love with tha coco
Dollar store foam ice chest and a block of coir. Still steaming the next day. Then it sits for a day at field capacity and then it gets nuked in a turkey bag for good measure. Now heres the kicker.. I dont put it in a tub. I S2B in a shallow bed outside in the shady spots. But the sterile techniques give it a good start and they love it out there. The real issue is that bears and rodents love it.
Starting on biochar then go to Po ☮️🇨🇦🏴☠️
I do know , the trich infected cvg tub cake I tossed behind my shed in compost, DID way better than inside when sitting in CVG
That’s something to do with your end rather than the substrate.
using manure gives you the best potency. THANKS.
Meh, barely noticeable if even present. Thanks for the comment ✌️
great info brother.
🍄 ❤️ !
Can you add nitrogen fertilzer to your substrate like liquid 32 or something like it
Interesting. Chicken manure works great for me. Although I will have to try cor instead of cvg.👍🏽
You still have to soak and hydrate the coco brick right? Do you still have to sterilize or boil coco?
Yes hydrate with either cold or hot or boiling water. I use boiling water to help break down the cellulose to make it easier to digest for the mycelium.
Coir and worm poop from my backyard has increased colonization time in my substrates. So if ppl want a happy medium i use that.
Thanks Sage 💜
Oh man, the walk through the woods video is really triggering my motion sickness :( appreciate the info though, thanks
You mention not adding coffee because it's super high in nitrogen and that encourages contam -- is spent tea contam-encouraging like coffee? Also, what about using spent coffee or tea sterilized and mixed with grains? Any opinions?
If the mycelium colonize the substrate why would you not want it nutritious? If it doesn't need them it won't use them
Because the grains have tons of nutrition. Too much nutrition will also cause strange fruits as well.
Thank you for the information.
👽 🍄 ❤️
So you don’t pasteurize the coir at all?
Nope, just boiling water/bucket tek
Hey sage , just wanted to ask , I’m a newer grower and am getting prepared to spawn to bulk, I have eco-earth reptile coco choir , my question is should I start with a cvg mixture or should I try with straight choir for my first time ?
Straight coir will work fine, they’re all non-nutritious. Just focus on your sterile technique and get spores or LC from a reputable source to ensure clean spawn, as dirty spawn is the main cause of contaminants rather than a non-nutritious substrate
@@Mycophilia thank you so much for the reply ❤️ instead of doing a full shoe box I found so smaller Tupperware in my kitchen I’m gonna experiment with those first then try for a bigger grow ❤️
Sage are the Alabama swabs stone producers? How do I grow these? Coir?
Coir lovers, no stones
@@Mycophilia ok can I purchase a stone producer from you? Those make you trip correct? I’ve never had them!
By saying "Non-nutritious" substrate you mean "less" nutritious as opposed to nutrient rich right?
Because any substrate you use is going to provide some amount of nutrition whether a minimal amount or not correct?
Yes, by non-nutritious I mean they will not contaminate if left alone, like coir.
For growing PE, which is naturally found as a poo lover, do dune substrate will make a big positive impact in yield ?
Not at all.
Thank you
CVGA (coir, vic, gyps, Alot of alcohol) to sanitize. 70% IPA is best.
Is there not enough nutrient in the grains at spawn?
There’s more than enough nutrients in the grains, the sub actually provides minimal nutrients
100% he know his stuff
Home Mycology did a lot of coffee videos like 5 years ago but for sure contamination prong you can’t go wrong with playing Coco core price or in product
Thank you. Yes I remember those videos!
Been trying for 12 months and not got 1 mushroom yet
my first attempt i used horse poo and never again lol the smell i exuded days after and not to mention the taste while eating them was disgusting.. my second attempt i went with coco coir, vermiculite and a little organic vegan fertilizer and got the biggest 70 gram wet shrooms i could believe. Tasted alot better too and i didnt smell like horse haha
Sounds like the poo was too fresh to be used, they should smell like rich soil ideally
LMAO. Thanks for the info. The waiting is the hardest part for "coir lovers"
Are you in Japan here?
Great video sage. Trim out all the fat and what's left to grow coir lovers? Spawn for nutrition and coir for water that's it!
💯 😊
Do you think there's a correlation between using some extra nutrition in your sub and the amount of flushes you get from it?
Depends. More flushes does not necessarily mean better, it could mean that the genetics you’re working with need multiple flushes to expend itself versus one or two flushes, the latter being better. The amount of nutrition in grains is massive relative to the amount of substrate we give, so it’s absolutely not necessary to use a nutritious sub with coir lovers.
Can i use my brown rice flour without doing brf? got a big bag of it and want to stick with grain
You'll have to use BRF, but you don't have to do PF TEK either. You can just spawn them to bulk, like with any grain.
I don't know if I get it, probably not.. But by your video genetics causes "meteor" shrooms but poo too can lead to meteor shrooms.. So I could cultivate at first small fruiting strain in poo to induce bigger fruits and then clone them later use it with coir maintaining an bigger version of previoulsly small strain (???)
Poo does not cause bigger mushrooms, genetics does
Even for Copelandia ?
6:50
Well… I used coffee with some corn…. I hope it doesn’t contam!
@@Hanson423 if you sterilized it with the corn and you didn’t put TOO much coffee, you should be fine :)

Do you have a manure + coir substrate recipe ??
50/50
@Mycophilia what do you recommend for a manure store brand ?
At around 10:00 you say you talk about field capacity in your videos and to go over it. I can't find a video specifically centered around that. I know what it is but it's hard to find anything specific like that on your channel.
True, I used to have some on my old channel but I haven’t reposted them. I’ll be sure to cover it more in-depth on here!
@@Mycophilia okay thank you that's good to know!
Where do I find core
I have compiled the basic items I recommend for getting started here, all Sage-approved (there is a good brand of coir in this list):

Is it possible to recycle coco coir substrate with the old mycelium with new grains? I try looking around all over the internet but wasnt able to find much information.
I would not do that, just not worth wasting good spawn on old spent (still colonized) coco.
I believe paul stamets mentioned that paturising used substrate and putting fresh grain in it gives bigger flushes
He said that about gourmet wood lover mushrooms idk about *poop lovers*
@@koukouzee2923 interesting. Someone wanna experiment and report the findings? 😉
@@Mycophilia heck yea
I'm feeling like doing expirements lately
@@koukouzee2923 yeah wouldnt the new myclieum (grains) just cannibalize the old coco coir that (200F oven sterile) . well coco coir is cheap but just curious. last thing i want is waste time with contam and trich.
Came here as a coir lover
I feel sea sick🤪
I've got these seed starters kicking around that I've been thinking about using for finding good genetics. 3 of them fit into a shoe box. As someone who just got into the hobby, I'm happy to run into content creators that don't say there's one way to do it. Current run is CVG, my next run I'll stick to coir only and see how it goes.
Cheers, best of luck Feeb!
I just wanna have my own but idk where to start. People making this seem so hard. Like really. Why 🙄
You reap what you sow
I'm going to coir.

I had the luck of getting to know a woman that owns a Horse riding and boarding outfit not too far from me and she lets me get all the premium field aged manure I could ever want at no charge. Ir has an added bonus of also having what's left of the straw in their stables which has plenty of urea nitrogen from their urine. It all gets carted off to a seperate feild where it has aged to perfection. I told her she has a field of Black Gold 🙂

mushrooms get their nutrition from the grain spawn for the most part. I don't think the question is valid.
