Honestly if I want a modern suv I'll go with Land cruiser or Range rover. I just think the defender should keep it's boxy old look like the g wagon does.

Would you be willing to pay $90k+ for it? Land Rover explained they could not produce a small volume product like the G-Wagon unless they moved it more upmarket. They decided to use the architecture of the Discovery as a starting point (beef it up) and broaden the appeal to a wider audience. Essentially LR is building two distinct vehicles off a shared architecture to save money and keep the Defender line alive.

Most comments on here that are negative are from people that want to live in the past, not the Now and definitely not the future. Why not go and buy an old defender and why your at it but an old black and white crt TV. They were crap as well, but no doubt you could fix it with a hammer. This new Defender is a brilliant piece of kit ( from what we know so far) Looks and talents to beat any off road vehicle out there. Yes I definitely want one. The 90 steel wheels, dark green

Tata do not understand the concept of a utility vehicle. Every time they redesign a classic Land Rover they head down the road of urban bling and city style icon. We have just lost the last Land Rover that had a simple ruggedness. With 85 ECUs this thing will be a more familiar sight in Land Rover workshops than it ever will in true utility roles. Come on reviewers, stop being an advertorial for Land Rover and start an honest critic of how suitable this is as a direct replacement for the vehicle it supersedes. Tough, rugged and simple to repair just left the room, replaced most likely with an engine bay so tightly packed that anything other than a service will require a workshop engine out - good for dealer labour charges, bad for owners pockets. This Defender should be renamed Surrender, there is no way it will match the lifespan of the previous model. In 10 -15 years time all the tech in these vehicles will make them a valueless liability, uneconomical to repair.

    • @wrathgar11
      @wrathgar11 Před 5 lety +1

      😂 😂 😂 Surrender.
You hit the nail on the head. If I want a tech fest liability, I'll go for a Range Rover. The Defender was meant to be a rugged, go anywhere toolbox on wheels. I don't like this one. Such a pity.

It's no longer a practical rugged utility vehicle. Doesn't look like you could easily repair or replace parts and bodywork or hose it out.

Yes, with respect, I think you are wrong. From a design perspective ( I am a designer) 'change' or modernity are not the issues here. It's a great car. If they build it right, if its reliable, it will do well. Good! But it's a cop out. Design wise, this is the product of a safety-first mind-set. An urban mind set. McGovern did a great job with the Velar. This is his speciality. But, Velar is uber Bauhaus, uber urban. Defender isn't. Defender could and should have echoed the soul of Land Rover. The attitude of an iconic 4X4, not a warmed over Freelander. This car should have felt (and feelings are key here, Gerry) like granite. Sophisticated in every way, but with the personality of a warrior/a picasso/a Sean Connery (and yes, designers think this way). Instead, we have an accountant/a renoir/a Pierce Brosnan. They could have had it all. If Jags retired designer had done this, we'd now have EPIC, instead we have soap.

This may well be better off road than the old defender, but in all other respects it no longer fulfills the original brief. I can't see them in military service. You won't be pulling the body off to fit a crane, fire tender, box body, camper body, mobile workshop etc etc. If this breaks down in Zambia, I can't see the local mechanic and his hammer getting it going again. No, the defenders true British replacement will be the ineos Grenadier. Google it.

So much negativity about the new Defender. It looks awesome. It’s built stronger than any Land Rover yet. Powerful engines. Auto only perhaps a downside for some. Yes the press models are pretty bling, but there’s a commercial on the way, and for all those whining like a 1992 defender diff, you will be able to throw, bales, sheep or dead animals in the back like any old 90 hardtop.
Stop the moaning, it’s boring, stop whining about the price and then saying stick with what you had, Mercedes revived the G Wagen, why can’t Land Rover do that....the price of a g wagen is horrendous. The new Jimny is a far better vehicle, well if you think so stick a horse box on the back with a couple Clydesdales in it, or stick your Ifor Williams on the back and haul 3 tonne of gravel out the quarry.....oh yeh, Jimny can’t do it.
What about catering for the army, blah blah, Land Rover ain’t catered for the military for years, they have sold off any Land Rover not being used as there’s far more suitable vehicles that don’t compromise. Remember the mobile coffin saga.
You’ve killed off the farmers friend, farmers have been turning to buying jap crap since the 80s and more and more of it. ATVs have become farmers friends no need to take a Land Rover to Feed sheep, drop off hay or take in the lambing ewes.
Discovery Commercials have replaced many hard top defenders as they do so much more and in comfort.
I could go on about all the arguments, but really folks grow the heck up. The utility market is tiny, nobody is wanting to convert a vehicle from one thing into another half arsed other, technology has moved on, specific vehicles are designed for those jobs now.
A bit or lot of technology is a daunting thought, but technology is better now. New Range Rovers and discoveries have been more capable than the trusty old defender for several years now, I’ve been round Land Rovers tracks where the old defender struggles or couldn’t manage, new defender deserves those technologies and better to put it back at the top.
Welcome to the world new Defender, you have a hard act to follow but am sure you will nail it.
and finally, the defenders predecessor the ninety and one ten, took its drive train and suspension from the Range Rover in the early 80s, a great success, then in 1991 when the defender name was given to it and took the discovery engine and turned into the even more successful defender.
We need another G4 challenge or Camel Trophy to show what your capable of to the public.

I like it. Especially the 90 on steel wheels. Just two things they need to fix in my opinion: 1) More colours from the classic Landie colour palette - especially some nice green non-metallic ones, and 2) Ditch those ridiculous painted panels in the rear side windows! Wtf are those all about? They look silly and hinder visibility. But both of these are easy fixes.

I totally agree on the side window panels, just looks wrong.

looks good, very good infact, not a huge departure from the previous looks, but of course internally its newer and better, just hope its reliable as that's where Land Rovers fall down.

"has all the ingredients to be excellent"
Except at all the things the old Defender was excellent at. And any off-roader for that matter.
Basically an SUV pretending to be a Defender, a fashion statement and an expensive one at that, which no doubt will be as unreliable as all the other cars on the current Land Rover range. R.I.P. Defender.

Xavi Chuvy Explain? Just because it’s a bit curvy doesn’t mean it can’t go off-road.
