  • Today marks three years since Jonty left the UK for Tanzania, the home of Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Leaving behind our young family for 10 days was painful enough but what was to come was the most challenging experience that to this day, remains one of the best moments in Jonty's life.

    Wow!! What an adventure and what an experience. Gorgeous scenes of the beautiful landscape, and so brilliantly captured, too! All for a really important cause. This is genuinely something I would expect to see aired on the BBC. Bravo, Jonty 👏🏻

    Great video. A group of my family and I just climbed Kilimanjaro at the beginning of October. I can attest that it was one of the hardest things physically and mentally to do. In the end we pushed through and made it.

    That first flower you showed is the Kilimanjaro Impatiens which is unique to the mountain. In the UK Impatiens is called 'Busy Lizzie' but ours is not so pretty.
    Don't worry about the emotions. I think the altitude must cause it as I saw several male colleagues tearing up through happiness or sympathy on the climb, including me 🙂
    Oh wow! I have just seen how it ended. I have to say I was surprised you went straight from Baranco to Base camp as almost everyone sleeps at Karanga so they can get more sleep at the base camp next day but it looks like that had no bearing on your ascent issues. Well done for surviving it all.

    I hiked Kili last summer. The true unsung heroes are the porters; seeing how hard the porters worked and how little they bring home. I was told the porters main income come from tips from the hikers. Our group tipped them as generously as we could. My friend and I gave away gear that we didn't need anymore. Please make sure to tip the porters and give away any gear you don't need. It is so sad that a porter died due to insufficient clothing.

    • @WONDERLUSTworld
      @WONDERLUSTworld  Před rokem +1

      Yeah! We had heard from hikers who did it a few years before me that even as recent as 2014, porters were climbing in flip flop slippers!! We gave away heaps of our gear too 😊 and Thanks for watching. I hope it brought back some good memories for you?

    • @KenMathTeacher
      @KenMathTeacher Před rokem +2

      Yes it did! I was blessed to be with great company and had lots of care (nearly 30 crew members for 8 hikers). We all managed to summit safely. It was a memorable experience. Thank you for your video.

    Altitude sickness is the worst. I had that when I travelled to Manchu Picchu and Tibet. The constant headache and shortness of breath was terrible.

    WOW! You took me back to Tanzania! I was there over 20yrs ago to produce a documentary of a gold mining project in Geita (near Lake Victoria). I only viewed Kili from the plane. There was a lot more snow at the summit then.
