  • A wonderful 6 day trek via the Machame Route. We embarked with Anirudh Singh, who is now a dear friend and phenomenal young man.
    Our guide, Thomas, was exceptional. So was our other guide, Ponsiong.
    We owe everything to our 8 porters, cook, and water/waiter companions.
    We will never forget this trip.
    Huge respect for Jaclyn getting to Stella Point after not eating for two from what was either food poisoning or a parasite. After visiting the hospital in Nairobi and obtaining three different medicines, the best they could note was that she had a UTI and the obvious--depleted electrolytes, dehydration, etc. Somehow she willed herself to the top!

    Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. This is an excellent video, and very useful to me, as I'm taking this same route in September 2018. However, I will be examining my water very carefully after seeing your little ‘friend’! Congratulations on your achievement - I am very impressed. I hope my group can emulate what you did.

    oiii awesome! I myself am a travel freak. I have hiked Kilomanjaro a few years ago. planning to hike the k2 or the annapurna next year!

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 7 lety

      K2! Now that's quite the endeavor. May safety and the best of conditions be on your side. Kili is about as far as we go I'm afraid. Too many other things in life that share our passions. However, if we were a bit more passionate about climbing, the Himalayans would be calling our names.

      I really love a challenge, something I could tell my future children. The problem however, is that my wife worries for my safety. I am really thinking this through, as It could be catastrophic.

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 7 lety

      Right. I think K2 still boasts an impressive 25% death rate. It's the descent which is the most difficult (as is always the case).

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 7 lety

      We've found some great places to hike around the world that are within our skill range (and we've barely touched Europe): jjsmalley.wix.com/travel
      In that link at the very top right hand side, you will see a tab titled "hiking." Put your mouse cursor over it and a drop down list of our climbing will appear. You can click on any destination to get a feel for the climb/trek.

    • @loffreyandkatitravel6024
      @loffreyandkatitravel6024 Před 7 lety +1

      Wow there is some great stuff on ur webpage! Even though I have not completely decided, I am leaning towards the decison to not hike the K2. Not now atleast. The reason for that is that hiking the K2 is a big desicion, and If something goes wrong, it could be my last desicion. Furthermore, Hiking the K2 requires a lot of skill, and I am uncertain if I have that skill or not. However, the main reason for me to think this, is because my wife's parents both passed away (unfortunately). Now all she has is me. Though it may sound very cheezy and cliche, its the bitter truth.

    What was the name of the company you used and what’s the weight limit for your duffel bags ?

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 4 lety

      Jason, thank you for the question.
      Honestly, I've gone to so many countries and done so many trips since this one that I won't remember.
      That said, each company, more or less, offers identical services. Along the way, we really didn't see much of a difference. I think it will come down to whether or not you like your guide (rarely do people dislike their guides) and each company probably has desirable and less-desirable guides).
      As for the weight, I don't remember. I think we could bring 23kgs each, but honestly I don't fully recall. This info is typically readily available via a quick email or call to a company.
      So sorry I couldn't be of more help!
      Thanks for watching.

    Hi! I've just signed up to climb kili in september 2020 also on the Machame Route. I was just wondering if the Barranco wall is as steep as it looks on the Gopro and if there is a danger of slipping/falling off at all? And did you take any medication to help with the altitude sickness?

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 4 lety

      We did take medications. It did help. I recommend it if you aren't used to trekking at that elevation.
      The wall is steep indeed. There's not really a danger of falling. The point is to go very slow. Everyone goes at a very slow pace and your guides are right there to help you. Polepole polepole.
      Best of luck to you!

    Hi, any advice for the Summit day ?

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 8 lety +1

      +Vikas Jadon It depends on many factors. First, are you doing 6 days total or 7 days total? Second, do you know what time you will depart? 11pm? 12am? That impacts pacing and plans for the descent. Third, try to get a decent pace going on the day before summit night so that you have more time to rest in camp before summiting in the morning.
      I, personally, like to go light on food while summiting. Take elevation sickness meds unless you are already acclimatized to that elevation. Keep a steady pace. For us it was hard. My wife was so ill (how she made, we will never know). It is not her fault but her illness really disrupted any pace. We would have to stop for her every 20 minutes or so. We had to take her to the hospital after the climb. It had nothing to do with the climb itself; it was just bad timing and luck as she either got a parasite or food poisoning. So, while we summited late and went at a slow pace, you should be able to go at a better pace and summit sooner.
      Layer up of course. Drink lots of water.
      It is hard to offer advice. For me, it was an easy trek as I have done harder things before. It was more of a bucket list item for me. If you go steady and keep pounding the fluids, you will/should be fine.

      Thanks. I am taking the same 6 day Machame Route as yours. Your wife seems to be a very brave women because I saw in video that how week she was and still she did it. Hats off.

    • @TravelingTeachr
      @TravelingTeachr  Před 8 lety +1

      +Vikas Jadon Yeah, it was insane. She hadn't eaten any food for two days (two spoonfuls of soup) and had diarrhea for two days. There's no way in hell I make it up that mountain; I would have stayed in camp. Of course, while living in Kazakhstan, we were used to doing 14 hour climbing days and elevation gain of 2,000 meters or more. So, we were conditioned for it but you can't ever plan for the unexpected.
      Ok, so 6 days. Great. Totally doable. On day 4, try to go at a good pace to get into the final camp (Barufu). More time to rest in Barufu is a good idea. Then, slow and steady on day 5. :)

    15:00 you would think since Mount K trekkers don't have to worry about dealing with shelter or food and have the luxury of carrying lighter loads the least they could think about is the trace they may leave behind. That's disgusting some people are so desperate to leave a mark, the only way that insignificant person can is by leaving Twix wrapper and a damn chicken bone at Mount K. I know it's not your trash, just sad to see:(
