I do cross-stitch while watching/listening to videos. It helps keep my hands busy, and I found that it does help focus, just like drawing during lectures actually keeps students listening to what is being said without getting distracted (and yes, I did it at school and university too, how did you guess). I only got sidetracked once because I ran out of thread, so I had to stop the video, put a new one in and start it again.

Yeah, I have ADHD as well and I found the framing of dopamine as less reward and more desire, very interesting. ADHD brains have less dopamine triggering, this has the effect of making us appear disengaged, or distracted from things around us. In a world of constant interruptions, particularly unimportant interruptions, being less susceptible might actually make us the more attentive.

It's funny that you put this up as it mirrors my views of the media. I gave away my TV and radio about 5 years ago and have never looked back. On social media I methodically block every advertiser that crops up, this way I have some control of it. On CZcams as soon as ads come on I mute the sound and scroll down to look at what else I can watch. It's not a perfect system but my stress levels have dropped significantly since doing this, and no more watching the news as it is now a cess pit. The biggest thing I have done is go back to reading, reading actual books no computer no distractions and it is damned liberating.

THIS... has enabled me to filter through B.S. much more easily over time. While I DO still get distracted fairly frequently, I also can see through much MORE crap. And when I compare myself to others, I see that MOST others are terribly distracted MUCH more often. I'm VERY concerned for younger generations in general. I would suggest that 80% of Americans are more interested in a rap/sex video, tiktok, Facebook or spending their last dime on the newest IPhone, than they are having a successful career and paying their own way through life. That is why I don't feel sorry for them when they complain about having nothing or working for "the man." Those above listed are their priorities and society is willingly being played for chumps, while some of us are laughing all the way to the bank.

Focus is attention which is the intent directed placement of awareness. It has absolutely nothing to do with the brain. The problem is overloading of sensual inputs which distracts from mindfulness/reflection into things, objects, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings ... It shifts beings from spiritual development into states of sensuality (animals).

You are right, I don't play along though. I never look at the notifications that still come through, despite turning the "push" notifications off. I simply clear them from my messages panel and then from the apps they are still in. I check texts, missed calls and social media messages for me, personally. I have multiple ongoing conversations happening at all times and it takes a little while to make my way through those. After that, I have several subscriptions to various CZcams channels that are centered on particular subjects, from off-grid living on a shoestring to stealth camping. I'm very conscious of the time I give to all of these things and I have trained myself to put it down and return to the non-digital world 🌎 I have lived in all my life for the evening. Reading, writing and playing 6-string and bass guitar, mandolin and banjo, listening to all kinds of music and old-time radio shows, as well as watching the occasional movie or listening to an audio book easily fill the time adequately. And I can't leave out board games like Risk, Go and chess or brain games like math and word puzzles. My favorite is Risk but it takes so long to play, though that doesn't stop us. Some games can go on for days. I like to make my own distractions. Good video, enjoyable though I think most people are aware of these things for the most part. It's all good, solid information and identifies (exposes) the methodology behind this crazy-weird explosion of advertising and information gathering. The end-game doesn't seem like it will be favorable to society at all.

When I was a boy, I thought myself stupid. Growing up on a very rural farm with none of the modern convinces, such as electric power or running water, garbage service, sewers, that sort of thing. When it was time to go to school we were off to the small 1 room school some 5 miles from our farm. While we were only rarely made to walk the distance, it was still a daily trip. Now for those who have no experience with a 1 room school, a short explanation is indeed in order. Our particular school was located in the middle of an area of the State formed by 5 brothers, when they passed on the area was split up between their children. So it was, nearly everyone in our school had the same last name. In a 1 room school, each class spends some time around the teachers desk, as the teacher gives them the lecture on their subject. Or course the entire school hears this subject being taught. This happens over and over as you climb the ladder of grades, sort of a preview of things to come and I always thought this helped with the education over all. In that school I made very good grades. Then came the year when my older sisters came of High School age. Since the nearest high school was some 25 miles from our farm over gravel an dirt roads, my folks decided to put the farm in the "soil bank" and find a place within driving distance. The first couple of years this worked out farily well as both sisters found places to live with relatives in town, my middle sister took a job as a baby sitter for a lady, her pay was room and board but dad thought it great, my eldest sister found a room at our granmothers house. Both girls took on night jobs at the local movie theatre, one selling tickets, the other popcorn. As things went along, we found that the haunting of the farm we were renting became a bit to bothersome and dad decided we needed to get the hell out of that place. Dad found us a rooming house that was owned by the same old man who owned the farm we had been renting. Mom, dad and my 2 sisters shared the combo living room/kitchen and one bedroom, I was given a room on the other side of the house which I shared with the fellow who washed dishes at the cafe where mom worked. Well to get to the point, I went from being the only one in the 5th grade in our one room school, to being one of 32 students in one of two rooms each filled with over 30 students in the 6th grade. This hit me like a brick shit house! I could not concentrate, I had no idea how to study since all my prior education was pretty much one on one with the teacher, here we fought for a it of attention from the teacher. I failed the 6th grade, and retook it in that town school. Well the second year in town, we had moved to a large house that we rented, dad hated to rent, said it was a damn waste of money, so he soon found a huge old house for sale on the wrong side of the tracks, where the water and sewer from the City never found their way across, and since it was in a different State nobody expected it to. We who lived on that side of town were considred roughians. I made it through the 7th and 8th grades with below average grades, and entered High School where I barly scratched through till falling in love with the true love of my life, while still a Junior. The spring of my Junior year, we were married, and I began my senior year in the fall. Well I knew I was failing my classes, and thought it was a waste of my time. After all here I was a married man going to school with a bunch of kids! So I dropped out and we moved to a nearby State where jobs were plentyfull and I went to work pumping gas at a truck stop, while my new wife served truckers coffee and chow at the cafe. This went on till Christmas when both our young minds suffered the agony of homesickness. After a night of drinking and crying for home, we decided to abandon our new life and move back home. When we got there, things had not changed. You could not buy a damn job, oh sure my wonderful wife found a job right off pouring coffee for the locals as the truck stop in townk but I found myself with no education, only a small list of jobs and with no income, my folks had to help us out. They had moved back to the main part of town since mom was in an auto accident that left her crippled to the point that an outdoor privy was out of the question, so they let us have the house on the wrong side of the tracks to live in while we got settled, and after a couple of months of total depression and trying to scrape by on what my wife made waiting tables I decided the only choice I had was to join the Army after all Vietnam was still going strong back in 1970 and they had thousands of jobs open, more opened each day with the death of more soldiers over there. I found I did very well in the Army schools which really paid off there. You see when assignments are passed out, the better your scores on the MOS tests, the higher the unit you could serve in. With my top scores, I was always at Brigade or at the least Group Headquarters. Well life went on, after the Army I joined the police force, again finding that I could make top scores at the police Academy. Following 24 years on the force, an accident put me on the disabled list. Workers Comp sent me to college where I found myself at the top of my class. The other students hated my test ability since I always killed the curve on the grading of tests and such. I graduated with a 4.0 gpa. I attribute my change in ability to learn to a couple of things. In the lower schools all I was interested was pussy and beer, when I was going to college, I knew my next career was dependent on my grades. Oh and ONE professor in college began his class (which was said to be the most difficult class in the entire college) by a lecture on how to study and take notes. This opened my eyes and I followed his advice to the letter. Well as things turned out, nobody wants a fresh college graduate, even with a 4.0 GPA when he is 55 years old. Ah well such is life. I recently lost the love of my life after 51 years of loving and living together. God how I miss my cute little girl, when we were wed she was 101 pounds and 5'0" When she was buried, she wore the same dress she wore on our wedding day. She held in her hand the gold plated rose I gave her one year before for our golden 50th wedding anniversary. Today is Valentines day, I had a rose to place on her grave but the temp is -30 degrees F right now, I think I will wait for another time to giver her that gift. Sorry for the book but somehow it makes me feel a bit better about life to talk this out, and I have so few friends left, they are dying off so quickly now what with Covid and old age.

    It's not just focus...it's patience.
I worked as a night auditor for 10 years at a major hotel. I also handled security when I had to...including training some aspects of the hotels security.
Long story short, I gave a test after about a week of someone being hired. It was simple: "Go into the lobby, sit down, and do NOTHING for 10 minutes. Nothing. No cell phone checking, no reading magazines/newspapers, not talking...nothing. Just sit there. Ready...? GO!"
    ..
Every single 20-something person failed except for one. The LONGEST time any of these kids managed to sit there and do nothing...are you ready? Ok, it was three minutes. Seriously. That's it. Shortest was about 30 seconds. It was CRAZY! And yes, this did make them do their job more poorly; shorter 'fuse' with difficult patrons or visitors, inability to wait to see if someone was up to shenanigan's, etc. The guy who passed? He had no cell phone. That was the only difference...well, he was also really smart. Always nice to have someone smart to talk to. :)
    ..
Me? I have no cell phone. I also have security settings and browsers and whatnot for browsing the net that I don't see advert's. I am not on social media...no twitter, instagram, facebook, etc. Only CZcams and BitChute, really.
    ..
As for "click bait". I specifically avoid any title that doesn't say anything. For example, your video "This Animal Can Do Something That Shouldn't be Possible"...only reason I watched it was it was on auto-play and started next. Another example of your videos... "Don't Want to Ruin Your Life? Never Do These Things". Haven't watched it. On purpose. :) Why? Too non-specific. I'm not wasting my time with a 22 minutes video that I don't know I might find interesting.
    ..
Then again... I'm guessing I'm not normal. That's fine. Everyone can be wrong, that's the most likely scenario. ;)

@Ty Lafitte blame the system not the users. IF you feel like you are robbing them, then thats because CZcams as a platform has decided this is the only way their content creators can benefit from all the work they put into what actually keeps the site alive. If add revenue is all that holds it together, then let it burn for all I care. If it truly becomes a problem, let the creators take up the real problem with CZcams, because that's where the issue really lies. It's not between the creators and the viewers, it's between the creators and the platform itself.

since 1997. I have used an advert blocking program. My router at my parents house has a list of advertising websites that are blocked from 20 years ago. So if they know anything about me... They would remove all advertising.
I disabled my Push notifications on my phone. My phone should never make noise unless I have a phone call. I hate all the shit that tries to take my focus. The phone has been sat beside me for 6 hours. I have not looked at it. My phone is not for information. it's a stupid device that allows me to talk to others. It does not need to do anything more than make phone calls.
