  • The Supreme Court rules in favor of Alabama Black voters.
The court's decision was unexpected given its recent trend of decisions weakening provisions of the Voting Rights Act. The 5-4 decision written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. was joined by fellow conservative Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.
The decision upheld a ruling by a three-judge panel that Alabama's congressional maps unlawfully diluted the political power of its Black residents. The maps included only one congressional district with a majority of Black voters, despite African Americans making up more than a quarter of the state's population.
The ruling means that a second Democrat could be elected from the state, which currently has one Black Democrat and six White Republicans in its delegation.
Justice Clarence Thomas sharply rebuked the decision, arguing that the Voting Rights Act did not require the state to intentionally redraw its congressional districts so that Black voters could control several seats roughly proportional to the Black share of the state's population.
This decision is the first for current Supreme Court justices to consider how to apply the Voting Rights Act to districts drawn with racial representation in mind. The fight centers on the state's Black Belt, where many of the state's Black voters live.
Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell and Joe L. Reed, Vice-Chair of Minority Affairs, Alabama Democratic Party spoke with Roland Martin about this shocking decision from the Supreme Court.

I'm white, but Thomas is whiter than I am in the worst way possible. I think I understand how young Germans feel when they see neo-Nazis. Thomas represents a foul time that I thought we had left behind us.

ATTENTION all African American college athletes, it is beyond time for you all to become more engaged politically. Some of this crap would come to an end shortly after y'all STOP playing and being the financial backbone for the likes of the University of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina etc..... You gotta hit them in their pockets in order to force those suckers to wake up.

I think Clarence Thomas should go to Home Depot and purchase several cans of white spray paint and allow Jenny to spray him liberally all over his body and call it a day.

Noone has asked the hard question of the GOP..." do you still look at us as slaves"??? If they answer no then the followup question is " then why are you doing what you're doing to keep us from voting"?

I’m telling you the only reason why the conservative justices ruled in favor, is because they are about to rule on affirmative action and student loan forgiveness this month.

I’m writing from South Africa. We have many issues with corruption of politicians and other problems. But I find it shocking that your system allows Supreme Court judges to serve lifetime terms - yet there’s no process in place to ensure that they conduct themselves in an independent, objective and ethical manner. This judge Thomas has clearly been implicated in unethical conduct by not disclosing material financial benefits he received from a benefactor, yet he’s allowed to continue serving until he decides to die?
