  • Virginia Woolf famously said, ‘A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction’. Historically, many female writers have found liberation in solitude in confinement. By going back to the Middle Ages, where we encounter some of earliest English texts written by women, the Anchorites, this talk will consider why women have had to go to these lengths to write, and what it has meant for them. Carolina is a 17-year-old student at Francis Holland School, Sloane Square. Carolina is passionate about English literature, which she will be studying at University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
