  • BONUS VIDEO: This is my fun take on Austin's Bike to Work (and everywhere) Day celebration that happened on Friday, May 19th, 2023. "May is National Bike Month, a celebration of biking as transportation, as recreation, as essential to our well-being and everyday lives. May is also when the National Bike Challenge kicks off, and the challenge continues through September. In 2023, Bike to Work Week is May 15-21, with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19, 2023. On average, 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around." - League of American Bicyclists (see link below)

      Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. It really does make the atmosphere better for everyone when we have more people on bikes versus in cars. Cheers! John

    What a fantastic initiative and the joy that fibrates everywhere! Great biketracks and it feels like biking in normal life starts to be accepted by the tinned part of the community!? Congratulations from the Netherlands!

      Thanks so much for watching! Yes, it's probably easy for you to see that our growing cycle network is very much Dutch-inspired, ICYMI, here's part of that story as told by Chris B w/ the Dutch Cycling Embassy: czcams.com/video/vJFernj6R58/video.html

    I have a good friend who said bike to work day is the best day of the year and he wished everyday was bike to work day. Actually he recently completed 13 years of never driving to work at all. With the exception of a couple of runs, he biked every single day. 🙂

      Yeah, it's amazing and encouraging how this event has a way of helping attract new people into the world of utilitarian bike riding. Sometimes it's just a matter of showing people what is possible and demonstrating that it can be an enjoyable way to get around town.

    We have terrific trails here in Columbus Ohio but no protected lanes to speak of. I'm so jealous you guys in Austin are doing it right.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  Před rokem +1

      And since Columbus, like Austin, is a "College Town," there is so much potential for many short trips to be made by bike or other "active mobility" devices by a population that is quite attracted to such options. Thanks so much for watching and for your contribution to the discussion. I hope you are enjoying the Channel. Cheers! John

    So cool if we can encourage folks to choose a bike for their commute once in a while. I'm convinced that they'll find it so enjoyable that they'll do it more and more. Loved all the smiles in today's video! May 30th is BTW Day here in Toronto. Of course every day is BTW Day for me, so I'll be out there representing on the 30th. 😉

    The one thing I miss are sturdy bikes to bike to work everyday no matter the weather, but maybe that is a difference in climate thing.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  Před rokem +2

      We're starting to see more and more of them here in Austin and across North America, but we definitely need more bike makers and bike shops, like Cycleast, to provide them. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers! John

    Red Line Parkway seems like such a great initiative. In many cities the long distance trails are next to a freeway which leads to a very unpleasant riding experience. Building it next to rail is much better. Unfortunately it requires there's rail though 😅

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  Před rokem

      It really is. A significant portion of the trail is through nearby parkland as well, which is nice and I highlight in this video: czcams.com/video/dGYg7ImKkiA/video.html

    The Cycleast crew is the best! They brought in my Omnium Cargo frame even though it's not something they normally carry. I did my own loop for Bike to Work Day, since I work from home on Fridays, and my meetings start at 8, haha.

    Our "Bike to Anywhere" day in San Diego was Thursday, but I needed the scooter so I rode my bike Friday. There were only two cars parked in the bike lane. One was someone who passed me, then pulled over to sit in the bike lane and talk to someone on the sidewalk.
    I didn't miss any festivities. I was north of the I-8 in El Cajon and the local pit stop was south of the 8 in the downtown area. The roads leading to it were totally unsuited for biking, so I stayed away.

      I much prefer "Bike to Anywhere" or "Bike Everywhere" Day as a name. Not surprised at how many people I met on Friday who work from home, but ride their bikes around town for all their other activities. Cheers!
