  • Rodney Stephen "Rod" Hull, 63 (13th August 1935 - 17th March 1999) was an English comedian, best known as a popular entertainer on British television in the 1970s and 1980s. He rarely appeared without Emu, a mute, highly aggressive arm-length puppet modelled on the Australian flightless emu bird. On 17 March 1999, Hull climbed onto the roof of his bungalow - named Shepherd's Cottage, in Winchelsea, near Rye, East Sussex - to adjust his television aerial In his attempt to improve reception, he slipped from the roof and fell through an adjoining greenhouse. The 63-year-old entertainer suffered a severe skull fracture and chest injuries. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

Heart breaking and lovely. He entertained me as a young person beyond what i can describe. What an entertainer. I hope his family occasionally still read these comments because i wish his family love, simple because he was a genius.

There is something very great about Rods story ...its very deep and he was a one in a million person. .and gave laughter and fun to so many people which makes the fact that he should have been struggling with finances at all ...but I think Rod had such strength of charector and it's a testament to his ability to see positively his situations ... God bless him.

It has taken me to be in my late 40s to appreciate just how good he was technically. A ventriloquist speaks and the puppet speaks back. WIth Rod and Emu, Rod had to be both entities simultaneously like a drummer playing to a different rhythm with each hand.

I was thinking not so long ago about the 70's, my childhood years. We had so much genuine entertainment back then. I made a list in my head of what made those years so great for me.
    Star Wars
    Evel Knievel
    Emu
    Atari
    Space Dust
    Glam Rock
    Top of the Pops
    Toys from Ideal an MB
    Space hoppers and Pogo Sticks
    Raleigh Choppers
    And so much more.
    The list goes on.
What do kids have now? Tik Tok, Xbox and knives.

I am American & don't remember seeing him, though he appeared on Johnny Carson & another entertainment show that I watched as a kid. Comic genius. His tax situation sounds similar to Sweet, from whom the gov't stole most of their earnings as well. High taxes destroy incentive, & lives. The "free" things those taxes pay for are actually quite expensive.
