- Rodney Stephen "Rod" Hull, 63 (13th August 1935 - 17th March 1999) was an English comedian, best known as a popular entertainer on British television in the 1970s and 1980s. He rarely appeared without Emu, a mute, highly aggressive arm-length puppet modelled on the Australian flightless emu bird. On 17 March 1999, Hull climbed onto the roof of his bungalow - named Shepherd's Cottage, in Winchelsea, near Rye, East Sussex - to adjust his television aerial In his attempt to improve reception, he slipped from the roof and fell through an adjoining greenhouse. The 63-year-old entertainer suffered a severe skull fracture and chest injuries. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Conquest Hospital in Hastings.
Heart breaking and lovely. He entertained me as a young person beyond what i can describe. What an entertainer. I hope his family occasionally still read these comments because i wish his family love, simple because he was a genius.
I agree 1 million times better than todays crap .
There is something very great about Rods story ...its very deep and he was a one in a million person. .and gave laughter and fun to so many people which makes the fact that he should have been struggling with finances at all ...but I think Rod had such strength of charector and it's a testament to his ability to see positively his situations ... God bless him.
Just learned about Rod today in 2022. You brought laughter to the masses and happiness to your loved ones. Rest well buddy and thank you for cheering me up.
never really thought about how great a puppeteer and physical comic Rod Hull actually was
Grew up watching his hilarious antics with emu, proper innocent simple comedy in those times..wonderful memories of my childhood come flooding back.........great times
I grew up with this guy...He was a comic madman; and, I will always be a fan! ❤
Loved this man , he was part of my childhood 💕💕
Mine too mate. Bless Rod Hull, he used to leave me in stitches when I was a lad. Thanks Rod, RIP.
Yes and me .I adored emu and I don’t think people realised what a genius Rod was too.❤️
Rod is an exceptional performer and one of my biggest hero's
Rod Hull was a genius. Thank you for uploading. RIP Rod.
Rod brought a lot of joy for young and old.
I was able to buy a similar doll and I can share this joy with all the children.
I am a huge fan of Rod's, one of my favourite British people (I love Emu too!) ❤❤ It's 10 days until his 20th anniversary and I am dreading it because of how long it's been ☹
The 1970s were certainly the golden age of tv.
I can't, i just can't watch too much. I only have to see Emu and Rod and i start laughing until it hurts. What a great entertainer.
I remember seeing Rod Hull and Emu at The Queens Theatre in Hornchurch when I was really young. He is so missed.
I had the pleasure of seeing them too in the late 70s in a panto when I was a kid. At one point Rod Hull went into the audience with Emu and started biting everyone :D
I loved his pink windmill show in the early 80s but I was only a little kid back then
So so sad 😞 . Watching this brought tears to my eyes . What a lovely kind caring man .wish he was still here . Bless him 🙏 ❤
Poor son. He carries the weight of his dad’s death on him 😕
same with catrina wdym
It has taken me to be in my late 40s to appreciate just how good he was technically. A ventriloquist speaks and the puppet speaks back. WIth Rod and Emu, Rod had to be both entities simultaneously like a drummer playing to a different rhythm with each hand.
I miss Emu!😥Greetings from Wiesbaden, Germany
I was thinking not so long ago about the 70's, my childhood years. We had so much genuine entertainment back then. I made a list in my head of what made those years so great for me.
Star Wars
Evel Knievel
Emu
Atari
Space Dust
Glam Rock
Top of the Pops
Toys from Ideal an MB
Space hoppers and Pogo Sticks
Raleigh Choppers
And so much more.
The list goes on.
What do kids have now? Tik Tok, Xbox and knives.
@Iranian Bob I don't remember Rod Hull's trial and conviction.
@Iranian Bob I think there might have been something besides anecdotal evidence against those people. Who made complaints against Rod Hull?
i am a kid and i watch all those and old emu videos! they are so funny ,, i never rlly use tiktok or any of that , i also like orville the puppet! ^^
@@2luxvs Cool! Glad to hear you're enjoying some of the older stuff.

During the war he was evacuated to Bargoed, a former mining town in the Caerphilly county borough of the South Wales valleys. The actress Doris Hare was born in Bargoed.
A brilliant man. Terribly funny. RIP Rod.
every 10 year old just loved the mayham that the bird caused.
RIP ROD HULL and Emu God bless him for the ability to entertain the world with a tacky Puppet.
he basically attacked people with a puppet, and it's still hilarious.
It wasn’t exactly a puppet it was pretty mischievous alive
yes hahahahhahaaha is funny :3
@@baseballisgreat4872 absolutely :3
His son has the same mannerisms ❤
What a brilliant son.
lovely man, r.i.p
What a legend!
19:13 "It was without question the darkest and the bleakest night of my life. The reception had gone."
...and then his dad died, too!
I'm going to hell 😬
No, it's always sad to see loved ones being torn from one's life 😢
And his was a tragic loss for so many people for sure.
The entertainer with the golden Arm and a emus head that made him famous.
Legend. Total legend...
A sad story to a very funny fan. Loved EBC1.
I couldn’t get my hand up a budgery! Laughed so hard I choked!
One of Rod's daughters also appeared with him in Emu's World/Pink Windmill Show
Catrina his step daughter I believe?
@@mistergooji Yes, that's her.
It made misery guts Parkinson famous
love this
Genius, absolute, Genius. 😀
Bill Wallace appeared in a couple of episodes of "BLACKADDER" - he played the jailer "Mr Ploppy" in BLACKADDER II and the German spy "Mr Smeeth" in BLACKADDER GOES FORTH.
Happy memories
I had the great pleasure of meeting Rod but his emu was a different matter. Regards
Few live as full a life as Rod did. Had he taken Emu up the roof with him, the result may have been very different. Few sons know their Dad well enough to call him "friend".
I am American & don't remember seeing him, though he appeared on Johnny Carson & another entertainment show that I watched as a kid. Comic genius. His tax situation sounds similar to Sweet, from whom the gov't stole most of their earnings as well. High taxes destroy incentive, & lives. The "free" things those taxes pay for are actually quite expensive.
Really loved this shows as a kid i once pied in my pants of laughing
Love rod
Legend! Brilliant!
Brilliant comedy
Wish rod never bought that house. That posh one
He could've live in a real windmill
He used to own Restoration house in Rochester - think the upkeep stretched his finances.
😦 Oh no, the abrupt ending is so jarring! 😨
Emu empire
Cant stop laughing
Yeah, I agree he was hiarious, I find him funny anyway, he muved to sussesshire near Ipswich shire, near Shire shire.Lived in a Shed and drang loads of tea.
Rolf Harris more than likely scared the wits out of the Emu
ㅠ :(
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He was a pain in the arse. Emu
😂😂
I thought it was well known that he stole the idea of emu while in Australia? nice man though
Hes more of a cult figure in entertainment now more then ever Never been copied since except for his son taken over like Sooty
It was good till rolf harris appeared
He had a lovely house in milstead Sittingbourne but got greedy and wanted restoration house in Rochester so eventually bankrupted himself . Also probably a gold digger wife. He divorced his first one. I heard the reception at the funeral was awful
Greedy? Perhaps he just yearned to restore a lovely old house.
Anyone else got here from Hearts of Iron IV?
