Hi all! I hope you liked the video. I have since listened to the studio recording again. While I can hear a similar vibrato it sounds to me like they drastically reduced it in post. It becomes much less distracting to me at that level.

When he originally released this song, he sang it in a much higher key, and, while it sounded amazing - so emotionally raw and powerful - it ended up wrecking his throat to the point where he had to stop singing for a while to help it recover. And ever since then, he's only ever sung it live in this much lower key. I miss the old version, and I wish there was some way a voice tutor could teach him to sing in that higher key in a safe, comfortable way, but maybe there just isn't one.

Like for example if Sam sings all the notes perfectly and has perfect technique I'd still listen to Lewis instead. I'd take unique singers who can make and technique (right or wrong) sound enjoyable and good over someone that keeps his jaw still while singing any day of the week. I was really interested and hoping you would review this one because I wanted to see what you thought of the jaw thing. I think it's choice though on his part.... but it always feels unsustainable when I hear it.. If it's just taste, is it just that you don't like it? or do you feel like it's genuinely just too much bad technique?

Ygor Cortes the first part of what you said may be true, but he’s been able to consistently pull it off (for now) in his songs... so perhaps he will learn later on. The second part of what you say is purely subjective, as there will be equal parts (give or take) of those that like that or not... I’m one of those that don’t think it sounds weird at all, I quite like the sound.

He is the most Scottish of Scottish I have ever heard. I grew up in the town next to him and have a similar thick Scottish accent. I have seen him live before, and the jaw thing isn't normal, he did have to cancel shows after Ellen show, and he was sick. Man, he can sing like that live you should have heard him at Trnsmt in Glasgow. He was epic. I have seen people comment on his pronounciation, "chu" that links without and you, is a very Scottish thing and something I catch myself doing. I work in a fairly international department at work and have had several people not understand my accent sometimes.

I actually love his vibrato in this performance. It’s gritty and unique, and just the right amount of weird ( if that makes sense ). I agree with you on seeing his eyes - it’s so much more intimate. I do tend to close my eyes when I sing, which makes it more of intimate for ME, but not the audience.

I assumed the extreme vibrato was a choice to emulate the “searching” quality of Autotune. Like it’s just part of the evolution of singing, as influenced by the technology and trends of the times. Younger audiences might even be familiar with that sound more than traditional vibrato at this point. Love your analysis and kindness!
