How to Wire TWO Types of Brake Light Switches - (Hydraulic and Plunger Style) |
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 21. 07. 2024
- In this video, I show you how I would wire an LED or Incandescent brake light circuit with two different style brake switches. One is a hydraulic switch, and one attaches to the brake pedal. Whether you have a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, or go cart, this basic brake light circuit will get you started with some rear lights. There are many different methods of wiring brake lights and brake light switches, but I prefer to wire them using a relay, because I feel like it is a safest method of wiring the circuit. Below is a list of the relays, brake switches, fuses, the incandescent and LED 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and a few other things that I used to make the circuit work properly.
Items used in the turn signal circuit (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)
đ 5 Pack of 5-pin Bosch Style Relays - amzn.to/2OfiwXT
đ 10 Pack of Fuse holders - amzn.to/3cU4CoD
đ Hydraulic Brake Switch - amzn.to/3jZnW5u
đ Brake Pedal Light Switch - amzn.to/3ze6aSN
đ 4 Pack of LED Bulbs (1157 style) amzn.to/3gcNV8G
đ 6 Pack of 1157 Bulb Sockets - amzn.to/3jtztJU
đ Universal Fuse Panel - amzn.to/3z0CFDI
đ 10 Pack of 1157 NON-LED Bulbs (old style bulbs) - amzn.to/3a1Wa4N
đ 272 piece fuse variety pack amzn.to/3k48cNt

How would you incorporate the turn signals with this set up do you have to use 2relays
I have power to the switch on power wire/fused power to relay/fused. But i have nothing going to the lights. New relay was bought. I am at a loss.
@@vincematthews864- are you understanding how the relay works and why itâs needed? Once you understand how it works, wiring it makes way more sense. Check out this video and it may help you wire yours czcams.com/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/video.htmlsi=SeY-u6SrOuUFDimw
Thank you, Iâm not sure why a person looses sleep trying to figure out wiring when you explain it so good.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Your videos have made the rewiring on my VW VEEP kit car so much easier to understand. All of the wires were done 44 years ago and never hooked up.
Thatâs great to hear! Iâm glad they are helping so many people sort out their project cars!
This is some of the best content for auto electricity that Iâve ever seen. Iâm completely re-wiring my 1965 VW Bug, but with modern relays.
Thanks! Iâm glad youâre enjoying the videos and they are helping an aircooled vw work right!
It would be awesome to see all of the circuits wired into the fuse block you showed and all working with each other! Like turn signal circuit, 4 way circuit, brake light circuit all working together through the block. These last videos have helped me ALOT since I'm having to rewire an entire car light system. So thank you!
This could not have been setup and explained easier if someone tried. Completely wired my son's offroad go kart based on your explanation and schematics. Outstanding job!
Very thankful for your videos, Iâm building an el camino I got as a bare gutted shell, so Iâm wiring the whole thing from scratch, and you make it very easy to understand, you speak clearly, lay everything out clearly, and get right to the point, thank you đđ»
Gosh I love El Caminos. Thanks for watching!
Need to wire up my handbrake warning light to the dash in my wifes ratrod...(crap Australian rules we have here).... this vid is what i actually needed. Cheers excellent content. Paul from Melbourne Australia
You're a life saver for this video. Nicely explained. Now I can wire my motorcycle.
Thatâs awesome! If you liked this one, Iâve got lots more! I also built a cool motorcycle a while back⊠search my videos for âHonda HawkââŠ. Itâs very much not stock!
I'm redoing a Honda super cub and this will make things so much easier. It's a 6 volt system and the conversion to 12 volt is very pricey. Now, I'll leave the 6 volt setup, not use the charging, and just run a 12 volt battery to all my lights. An 8 AH will run more than long enough for led turn signals and a small led headlight. Thanks for this tutorial, it's really well done.
Sounds like a great project! Thanks for watching!

This helped me out so much, re doing a 64 impala and wondering why my brake lights werenât working. Got the 2nd style with the plunger, thank you!
Awesome! If you have seen my other videos, you know I have two 64 Impalas (convert & wagon). So Iâm absolutely thrilled that my wiring videos are helping out other 64 owners! Thanks for watching!
Great videos. Been watching this one, and the led indicator videos đ
Thanks! Iâm glad you find it enjoyable/helpful. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the videos using them for my go kart project, your videos are excellent and easy to under stand.
Thank you! Iâm glad you enjoy them!
Love the video. Really gonna help me takle the brake lights on my motorcycle. What about running lights though?
This is good video. Only aspire to see one showing how the brake switch relay assembles onto the brake pedals in many cars currently on the road. What with all the baffles, clip holders and cocoons for the hitch pins.
your video is very clear and easy to understand, thanks bro!!
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!
Do you have a diagram for the whole system you showed at the end?
These videos are amazing and I'd like to use that exact setup with the relays but wired into my turn signal cam.
Just having trouble connecting them all together correctly
amazing video, love the energy and interest you put into it, and very clear and understandable too, you sir, have gained a subscriber
Awesome! I really appreciate you subscribing and sharing the kind words! Thank you!
the way i understand the mechanical brake switch construction (in this case the nc spst design) is as such - the button is a nylon post on a spring, the spring is housed in the narrower end of the switch, the post passes thru a divider, on the opposite end of that nylon post, in the wide end of the switch, is an un-wired contact point, a copper washer. when you brake the switch is at rest and that washer is pulled (due to the spring expanding) against the dividing wall which makes up the spring housing, on the face of this divider is a split copper washer, each half of which serves as a contact point for a single wire post on the wide end... or at least thats how id build one... but theres more than 1 way to skin a cat.
You been a lot of help for a custom Honda bobber that I have been working on. Could you make a video of using the break lights with turn signals? Or if you do can you point me to the right direction thanks for your time
You're a teacher thank you
Thatâs the best compliment I could hope for. Thank you!
Thanks for your help đ My Congratulations đ.
Firstly, thank you so much for this content.
I am curious, though⊠how would one go about having the running lights in operation, and then when the turn signal, or brake is activated they either pulse, or illuminate brighter?
Thank you, thank you, thank you
Thanks đ you are the best!
No way! YOU are the best!
Just did the exact setup thanks man the only thing I need to do is turn the lights on constant when the lights are on
Muy bien bro ahora entiendo mejor las luces te sigo
Nice information, thanks
Youâre very welcome!
I am doing a 89 foxbody and the stock wires are complete garbage. Spliced a million times and they have so many gremlins that I finally just pulled them all out. Iâm learning a lot from your videos. Thank you. I am no electrician by any means, but your videos make it look easy.
Thanks for the kind words! Good luck on your mustang project and stay tuned, I have more wiring stuff coming!
@@WiringRescue I plan to do basic wiring. Headlights, high and low beam, running lights, marker lights, turn signals and brake lights. Also doing power windows with manual locks. No heater or ac. No radio. The car will have a carburetor. Basic electronics to operate the motor and fuel pump. How many relays would I need?
you explain in using a small fuse box circuit to operate head lights which am i able to run my brake lights as well a line lock set up on this fuse box circuit ? i would like to see you work your magic on this type of set up.
i grew up in the era when color coded was so faded you never knew for sure. have watched this video and think it very very good. i would now like to rewire my '69 ranchero, '41 plymouth and '56 chsv wagon with leds. which filiments in the bulbs do you use fwhich actions? and do you know what the color codes are for the ranchero? thanks much
Thank you for these videos full of information and very well explained thank you
Youâre welcome! Iâm glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks!
How would it be wired if the brake light switch also has a mode when you have them as running tailights when you turn your headlights on?
My understanding of dual filament auto bulbs is dim filament for tail (thinking white wire) and bright filament for stop and turn (thinking red wire)
Thanks for this đ«Ą
Great video, What if you have a magneto instead of a battery on a dirt bike with running lights, Do you still need a relay to turn the rear light into a brake light.
My motorcycle already has a hydraulic brake light switch via Foot brake. But I need to add another brake light switch via hand brake. I'm going the hydraulic switch route but I'm curious since I already have a footbrake switch could I somehow add the new switch into that wiring or would the new hand brake break switch need its own relay and fuses?
Can you show how to connect some auxilary lights to existing upfitter switches, a secondary switch and the reverse lights and if possible if you can show them connected or feeding through the truck to a trailer using the 7 pin connections.
You Explain everything so that even the dumbest of people such as me can understand it. Keep up the work.
Nicely done thanks
Youâre welcome! Iâm happy to help!
What size fuses did u use
In the first example for the brake lights is the 12v Power switched or HOT all the time?
I'm trying to do something like this but I thought you could combine the turn signal and brakes into one. But on my system its working like crap cant get that thing to work at all I by passed it and both turn signals worked when only 1 should have
Painless Wiring makes a simple kit to do this job. Turn signals and brake lights wired the proper way and not running the brake signal through the tail lamp filaments. You can run 4 relays, one for each signal light and feed the brake light signal through the normally closed contacts of the rear light relays. Feed from flasher on 87, brake signal feed on 87a, output to light on 30
So.....dumb question but here ya go......does my 63 Chevy have a relay on the brake lights? Thanks for the great videos!
When we use circuit breaker,do we need to use fuse? Thanks bro
I have an issue with rear turn signals left and right not working nor brake lights not hazards could it be the turn signal switch I checked fuses and replaced brake switch and light bulbs any help greatly appreciated thanks
These have been so helpful! Thank you so much. Just subscribed. Question for you though, tail lights need to be always glowing at night and then light up brighter when brake is depressed. Suggestions on how we can do this? Thanks so much!
Yes! Stay tuned for the next video. Iâm working on that right now actually.
Great video thanks
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
would this work on mini bike hydro brakes? like if i used a banjo bolt-wired switch, would i then run the two cables to battery and switch?
Can you show me how to relay the dash AC switch to the binary pressure switch to the AC compressor and the trinary to the AC compressor I need your help!
so how would you do running light then it lights up more when you brake
I canât wait to see this with parking lights.đ
Diodesare not needed if running power from two different fuses to the same light bulb?
I love this man, soo helpful đ

@@WiringRescue ofc man Iâm building another motorcycle at the moment and Iâm making it street legal so i needed to figure out brake lights. These videos have been very useful!!
First, Thanx for your how-to vid's, I've referred to a few of them and saved a lot of stress. So, I'm having a near wrench throwing issue that's been a thorn. I have a 62' F100 that had only headlights, and finally got taillights, blinkers, and hazards, but the brake lights just ain't having it. I followed this setup and tried a couple others, no dice. I had an old
Yankee Turnflex 734/737 signal switch I wired. What am I not getting?
What are you using as an actual brake switch? Do you have one on the pedal or a hydraulic one in the brake proportioning valve?
What would trigger for the brake light to stay constantly on if the brake sensor is working properly? Would it possibly be the relay that is not working? Having issues with motorcycle would appreciate the input
Most motorcycles have two brake switches. One for the hand brake and one for the foot brake. Sometimes springs are missing or worn out on the foot brake causing the switch to activate. If you unplug each switch, you can determine which switch is causing the brake light to turn on. Once you know which one, then you can test the switch with an ohmmeter or test light to see if it is working properly.
Good luck and let me know how it works out!
What about haveing 2 brake switches like on a motorcycle?
Thank you for posting this video, Iâve been wanting to tackle the wiring of my taillights on my 63 bug converted to 12v. Any tips on with a master cylinder that has two switches?
First, Iâd determine what the two switches do and decide whether you need both of them or not. If you donât, then just stop using one of them and wire it as described in the video. If you do need that second switch for something, like making an automatic stickshift transmission work or something, then youâll need to sort that out separately. Either way, Iâm cheering for you and glad to see you found the video helpful!
Great
If youâre wiring in two switches, what they both still go to pin 30?
En diagramas puedes hacernos los tres?
Do you need to replace the old style flasher when running LED bulbs? My older cars have the cylindrical metal encased steel flashers.
Yes you do, but they are not costly.
What size fuses
What size fuse are you using for the 12v power directly to the brake switch.
I actually made a video to answer this exact question. Here you go czcams.com/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/video.htmlsi=vPG_IaXraz_OSUwp
I wired my turn signals like your video and I'm having trouble with it working at times .could u give me some advice
Iâd check all the connections for loose wires. Thatâs the most common issue. Loose/damaged wires.
Hi! Excellent video! You do an amazing job of explaining how to do this wiring job. I have a 1956 Ford Victoria Car. The current tail light wiring is as follows. There is a black wire that goes from passenger taillight, Tâs off to the license plate light, goes to driver side tail light then to the headlight switch. All 3 lights turn on with the headlight switch. There is a green line on driver side taillight that activates the turn signal. There is a ted line on the passenger side taillight that activates the turn signal on it. My question is what am i missing to make the brake lights turn on? Itâs missing those wires. I converted the front brakes to disc and will be using a pressure switch like you used to activate the brake lights. Hopefully i gave you all info you need to give me a solution.
Thank you very much in advance!
Eddie
Hi Eddie! Check out this video - it may help make sense of what Iâm about to say - czcams.com/video/Io_i9016o10/video.html
Your turn signals and brake lights likely share the same wires. I donât have a wiring diagram for your car handy, but I would bet that your brake lights go through your turn signal switch. So you just need to find those wires under the dash (if they still exist) and connect your hydraulic brake switch into them. Definitely check out the video I linked to, because it shows exactly what youâre after! Thanks for watching and good luck with the 56 Ford! It sounds like a car I would love!
@@WiringRescue Thank you very much i just watched the video and now know what to look for!
You are awesome!
@@MrHotrodTBone - excellent! Iâm thrilled that my video is playing a very small role in a 56 Ford build! Good luck on the project, and let me know how it works out!
Iâve been needing a video like this. I am doing a little restoration project but I still need just a bit more help. Do you possibly have an email or somewhere that I can chat with you for a minute at? Or if youâre okay with it I can post the question here in the comments?
Can you ad front signal lights and turn signal to this setup?
Stay tuned, I am working on a video for this right now!
Here is a question for you as I am Not good with electricty! So, do I Need a hydraulic pressure switch on my proportioning valve And the brake light switch with my pedal? If so do I wire it as your diagram shows? Thanks, Warren
Is there nobody out there that can Answer the above Question!?
I'm having an issue with my brake light. While bike is on the brake light is stuck on but when the bike is off, all the lights work perfect. Any suggestions?
My brake lights have 3 wires coming out of it, Black/Red, Black/Yellow and Black, tried doing this but it doesnât work, something with the extra wire not sure.
I tried this way to. No lights but have power to my wires. I am lost and pretty frustrated at this wiring crap
I need the brake lights to idle, then when i push on brakes? It gives the full 12v
Generally people use two filament bulbs for something like that. Each filiment is a different wattage, so you would use the lower wattage filament for the low-light and the higher wattage for the brighter brake lights.
I have a setup like that first one (only for the brake switch) but i don't have a relay on it. Is this why either the fuse or the switch get hot and stop working eventually?
Iâd always recommend a relay. Itâs just safer and better. And yes - you have all of the power for the lights running through that switch which is probably hard on the switch.
@@WiringRescue thank you so much đđ»
@10:10 if you dont mind my ask. why did you use two Flasher Relays? could you not have used a single flasher relay for the Left+Right signal + the Hazzard lights or does the Hazzard require its own flasher. I initially thought the hazard switch was daisy-chaining the two LR bulbs together and using the same flasher till I noticed the second in use.
Excellent video btw very useful esp as I'm wiring/wired my entire chassis & engine.
Generally hazards are available for use all the time, even when the car is off. Turn signals are only available for use when the ignition switch is turned on. Because of this design, many cars use two flashers, one for turn signals and the other for hazards. Itâs possible to do it with one flasher, but youâll either have turn signals that work with the car off, or hazards that only work with a key on.
@@WiringRescue Excellent explanation, 4 videos down into the flashers that you posted and later realized the "why". Excellent videos and great detail.
So what would you have to do to change a normally closed brake light switch to a normally open brake light switch? Different master requires the different switch. That is the reason for the change.
Any more content on your yellow a body? I also have one so Iâm kinda biased but would love to see more đ
Sadly it is gone. I had gotten to a point where I had to invest a lot of money to make it pass a state inspection, and the car + the time it would take was not worth it to me. It would have been a deeply bad financial investment. However, it has sold a couple times since then and it is now in the hands of the grandson of a woman who had it in the 1980âs. So it seems to be in good hands. I also started a different channel specifically for my car projects, because this one has unintentionally ended up as a wiring channel. Lol

I followed your schematic to wire a pack brake light on my go-kart can't seem to get it to work. The only thing I have different on my is on my hydraulic switch I have two connections of break start and The brake light can't seem to make it work
Are your grounds good? Touch the two wires that go to the brake switch together and see if the lights turn on.
My hydraulic brake switch has two screws instead of the flat spade type. Does it matter which wire goes to either screw
It should not matter which wire goes to each terminal. It will work either was if you have it connected to a relay.
Can you make the connection to the pressure switch by joining with the blue wire
I prefer to do it the way I described in the video. I donât believe your method would work for very long.
Why cant you put the brake switch on the blue wire ?
How do you do this but have running and/or parking lights?
There are several ways of doing this, check out my wiring playlist where I have a few videos on the topic: czcams.com/play/PLsF7T1tRFy2hmiiUUfMZNyV-BUA_yrPIh.html&si=PYJV9T7cy7W5enHO
hi jeramy, why is that when i press on the brakes, the turn signal does not flash on either side
Itâs tough to diagnose things over the internet. My best guess is that the brakes are sending power to your light bulbs, and making them light up. So when you turn your turn signals on, they cannot make the bulb flash because the bulbs are already getting power 100% of the time from the brake switch. The turn signal wants the bulb to lose power intermittently and it canât because your brakes are feeding it the power when the turn signal is pulsing off.
What size wire would you recommend
It totally depends on what youâre doing. Luckily, I made a video for this exact question. Hopefully it will help you out. czcams.com/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/video.html
What Amp fuses were used
It all depends on the components that you are using. I made a video on how to choose the right fuse and wire size which you can watch right here czcams.com/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/video.html
Does the fuses go by the battery
Yes, generally fuses go as close to the power source (battery) as possible.
I am working on a 1972 Ford F-350 about to attempt to do this I was wondering what is the flasher at the top coming from the battery and fuses goes to please help
Towards the end of the the video when you have the break circuit hooked in it looks like itâs hooked to the emergency flasher toggle switch
You can ignore that second flasher on the top. It was left over from something else I was trying.
If you want to wire hazards and turn signals, check this out. czcams.com/video/lnhMx-fnUmI/video.html. You can add the brake circuit to that and it all should work really well.
Thank you so much man love your videos
What about running lights
Hello, just to be correct- the relay is not actually necessary, it's just there for safety. I am using a unimax switch that can handle way more than 12 volts. I am assuming the white and yellow wires would be spliced instead to remove the relay. Thanks!
You are totally correct that itâs used for safety. Imagine if you have 4 brake light bulbs that each draw 2.5 amps when lit and you are not using a relay. The brake light switch may only be rated for 7 amps. So when the 4 bulbs light up, 10 amps go through the switch, which can only handle 7 amps, and now your switch is broken, melted, or on fire. Thatâs why I prefer using relays for things. It allows a low amperage rating switch to control a larger load in a safe manner. :)
Do you have a link for both switches?
Yeap, the links are in the video description. Check them out.
My problem is the truck takes like no brake pressure to come to a stop. Such low pressure that the lights wonât activate. Any recommendations?
What kind of brake switch are you using?
Pressure type.
I have done all this but for some reason I have no brake light when using turn signals or with lights on
Okay, just ignore all the other circuits for a minute and focus on the brake lights. Are the bulbs grounded properly? Do they have power coming from the relay? If so, does that power go away when the turn signals turn on? Or are you losing the ground side of the circuit somehow?
Can you show how to wire it up if your brake light wire runs both turn signal and brake light 2 functions 1 bulb
Yes
Ok now everything works except the rear parking lights
How to connect a line diagram of a relay with fog lamps
