It's no surprise that even game developers (except for Nintendo) think that the world is not interested in their content.

About the co-op thing and players vs. pawns, pawns were your crafting system.
You had to collect materials and then select the number of your pawns to work on it. You could have up to 3 different projects.
Which is where Renting Pawns and Arisen-co-op comes in.
If you wanted to play with other people - you could.
If your friends weren’t on AND your Main Pawns were busy crafting, and you needed more pawns - YOU COULD.
This is why 3 Main Pawns, Rental Pawns, and Arisen Co-Op worked beautifully.
Unlike DD1, you had an EXPANDED list of commands for your pawns. You could command them to target weak enemies, strong enemies, aerial enemies, heal you, support you, buff you, back away, etc..
Later on, they gained Dragon Powers allowing them to trigger random effects. Additionally, they could play ALL vocations too - Tank, DPS, Support.
DDO was a super fun game to play and it was a shame that it got pulled. We never got the lands of the Water Dragon and the Black Dragon.

DDO was my very first Open World MMORPG in medieval fantasy genre. It was one of the best time i had in my gaming history. Knew about it through a youtube ad. The map was so vast with so many lands, every place has its unique atmosphere.
Gotta love the forests with many big trees, rivers, bridges, fireflies, the sounds and bgms were very relaxing, the Inn was cozy as well. Though there was many goblins and wolves especially at night. The most rememberable encounters i had in these forests were with lizards that guarded in front of an abandon sewer's entrance. And an Ent the Giant Tree boss inside a cave, it guarded the entrance as well. What i also found it really cool was the concept of dungeon inside a dungeon, there were some places called Catacomb and when you reached to the end of it which you thought you had already explored the whole place but there was another door in some of these catacombs that leaded to an even deeper floor. It gave off a sense that you're heading to the unknown and dangerous place, not to mention the place's atmosphere also shifted to something that made you stayed high alerted and extra careful the whole time compared to the upper floor. It was really well done thanks to the one who executed this idea.
Aside from those points that i liked. Some lands and mission quests had a really wtf kind of terrains and paths, destination guide such as arrow wasn't a thing in DDO and it had caused me so much pain to figured out, it even came to the point that it forced me to jump down a lot to the verge of dying. It was really annoying.
Grinding for high quality ranked equipments from the start as a f2p was very tough as well. I remember a mission quest that we had to fight a skinny black dragon and I ended up getting 1 tapped from a household shadow wolf that the dragon summoned most of the time. Then a lot of other players had to revive you, it took like 5 secs for you to get revived which could cause other troubles. Situation of teammates ended up dying just to revive you happened a lot. 5 secs were very long on a constant and chaotic battle, dying like 4~6 times already made you felt like a burden for the team. The battle was fun i tell you that, but it was definitely not cool either.

@@deadjoey6042 Just like other MMORPG, if you could charge for Gold Gemstone which is the needed in-game currency for Gacha it'd be a lot easier for you to get Gacha exclusive high quality ranked equipments. Even if it was pure RNG it was still far easier compared to the tention and shjt that you had to go through to get crafted ones from the Crafting System.
There was Bazaar in the city and some villages which was the only place you could make money from other players, you were allowed to sell but items and crafting materials only so pretty much the material i made the most money from was Amethyst Gemstone. The best spot to search for Amethysts was located inside a wrecked ship on a sea coast, usually you can only find 1 inside a silver chest but on good day you could find around 2 or 3 of them. They worth around 27~30k Gold each, so i usually save them up to 20 which was the limited amount a gem stack can hold. It didn't require any combats but the amount of running back and forth between the Inn which is the spawn reset on the Sea Coast map to that wrecked ship made me feel sorry for my character's legs. It took around 12 minutes per lap, back and forth so it was pretty much just getting inside the Inn then came out and ran to the wrecked ship then return and repeat. I kinda wished they placed the teleport spot near the ship but realized it'd only make sense if they placed it near the Inn.
The reason why you needed money was because buying crafting materials from other players could save you a lot of time doing quests, especially those tough ones that drained a lot of your energy. So you could just buy from the Bazaar and then went straight to the lab and crafted equipments. The baazar also required reservation fee so you had to pay them in order to get a slot for selling your stuffs, which is reasonable i guess lol.

With NGS they moved to "open world" and its one of the most egregious changes to a long standing franchise (along with a lot of other smaller things) that alone nearly killed its entire identity so its fucking hilarious that games like Monster Hunter and Relink do exactly what NGS moved away from and are finding infinitely more success.

Capcom has 100% learned how to multiplayer from the success of MH:W, if that could be streamlined into the ability to load in, giving sentience to a players' pawn if they 'fire an sos' or give it the full Baldur's Gate treatment and we build our players together, I think we could really have something.
I think a full solo experience on release could potentially set the foundation for multiplayer in a future expansion. They have all the pieces, they just need to put them all together in the right order.

You could choose single player with your pawn and choose 2 other pawns, play with 1 friend and your pawns, or matchmaking into a party of 4 and leave your pawns behind. When you go solo again your pawn gets accelerated xp to catch up.

has the same combat but different systems to Dragon's Dogma you have to work with the other classes you can't solo not as a tank or not as a support. the DPS are bit bit tanky not really but kind of.
but the important thing is the abilities that both of those other classes supply so you can break big enemies stamina essentially and when you do that they become again considerable amount easier to damage and take more damage and the only way to affectively do that when not massively over levelled compared to the enemy is to have the right damage affinity on your weapon which you need a tank to do and to have their weak point to revealed which you need to support to do.
all classes can do damage of course but not like the dps, the dps could take a hit but not like the tanks, and the support can take agro but you don't want them to, and also the tanks are gods at agro and survivability if you have the skill you can level 1 solo bosses as the Shield Sage but god damn is it going to take long, and you will be 1 shot at any time, but your block will block all damage

I think the biggest reason for no co-op in DD2 is that Capcom doesn’t believe there should be more than one Arisen at a time due to lore reasons, outside of also programming and figuring out progression for the other person that joins
I think that it would be a lot more viable that you’re able to create a secondary pawn for multiplayer instances that can be summoned exclusively for online play, and that can be leveled and gain experience just like your main pawn, and that can be hired by other players the same way that main pawns work as they do now
Since there are seemingly endless variations of pawns and an uncountable amount of them, these would be the least immersion breaking method lore wise, and also make handling progression a lot simpler than managing two Arisen characters in one game world

    • @steamfeuver
      @steamfeuver Před 3 měsíci +3

Also just that the first game didn't have coop, the expectation isn't there for the game to have coop, the first game was successful despite the online component, and the game devs for DD prefer doing cool AI shit with pawns and async multiplayer than full on coop.
Not every game needs a multiplayer or even a coop component, and especially in Japan, the culture has already shown a preference to have as LITTLE to do with other players as possible, at least when it comes to core experience of the game.

    • @Nurptog
      @Nurptog Před 3 měsíci

@@gon720 I thought that at first, but then I tried to think about it from a developer’s point of view in how that could be potentially game breaking when returning to your world
Say you join someone who has progressed to the end game, and can essentially power level your main pawn or give them some crazy strong gear that, when returning to your single player game, could be used to cheese the game from having some overpowered pawn, and take out any of the challenge that the developers want players to experience
Having a playable secondary pawn for multiplayer instances only would have it entirely disconnected from your own game world, and would even be a secondary form of progression that likely would be customizable in the rift as you level them and wait between summons to other player worlds
I suppose it essentially would turn the pawn rift into a type of multiplayer hub that not only would create a social element, but do so while still maintaining the choice of having the Japanese preferred “shorter term asymmetric” instances, or for players that want to stay for longer sessions (like playing with friends), also having the option to do so

The offline version is pretty weak and easily soloable, but the online version is meant for hundreds of players to gradually whittle down until its health get low enough for people to kill it, with each time the dragon is killed, it gets even stronger. If you want a kill and get loot, you need to join the raid multiple times to get enough participation credit, and also join when it has low enough health to kill. It is literally physically impossible to solo the online version from full health to 0 without cheats.

I really don't understand why they didn't introduce co-op to Dragon's Dogma 2, pawns could've been controlled by your friends just as well as they would've been by AI, actually even better with the option to play solo with AI or co-op with friends, I don't think that would be that hard to implement, Larian understood this need since DOS1 to play co-op with friends. I really hope they introduce it as a DLC later on or if someone mods the game in such a manner that it is possible like in Skyrim Together, but I think it would be harder depending on the framework of the game. The base is there with pawns being controllable characters like your own, why not go the extra step and implement that?
The game will still be awesome 100%, even the first game was awesome, but it's a wasted opportunity that could've catered to more people since a lot of people want to try out a single player experience with a friend or 2, idk why devs don't understand this or why they don't implement it in more games like these that are single player RPGs with a party system in place.

In the trailers, DD2 highllights how adaptable the pawns are. If other PCs use your pawn, they'll come back with knowledge about monsters and quests. I feel at least some of the reason why some games don't come overseas is the cultural differences. I mean, look at the vitriol that spills whenever a game gets censored or has its story changed to "fit Western Ideals". If you never intend to port it, you'd never have to make those changes. Another possibility is that if the stand alone game didn't see enough sales or praise, there's even less incentive to pursue a port of an MMO spinoff. Yet another could be the trouble with translation. Some games NEVER properly translate stuff, as seen in games like the original Maple Story, which IIRC, had quests _in the starting area_ that were bugged because the items needed to complete it were mistranslated and, since it was never corrected, the quests could _never be completed_.

Oh gods i loved PSO and Terra. Action combat is where it is at without the you go, i go and waiting for cool downs all day.

I completely disagree with Asmon about tab targeting. I would even say players want the complete OPPOSITE, they want action combat. The fact that the top 2 MMOs have it has nothing to do with that, it's a complete coincidence. Action combat MMO are all Korean and everybody knows why they failed - P2W. The combat and visuals is always their only saving grace.

I actually think tab targeting is less accessible. It is a very obfuscated way of playing, and is an anomaly that exists within only this sphere of MMO gaming. Sure it is easier once you are used to it, and ofc it's easier for all the old mmo players who have been playing that style for decades. But it is a much more unnatural style of playing and has a steeper learning curve. Whereas hopping into an action based game and controlling your character's view and attacks with a reticle is much more intuitive.

I’d even be happy if I was limited to being a pawn as a co-op option. I just wanna play with a buddy. Would be fun getting into dumb shenanigans

Idk sometimes the pawns suggest a treasure or something and you say go and they direct you to the quest instead which is kind of annoying also they will take you to things you already opened but these are things they can fix

i dont understand how games like this die so fast when they are so good. this was like the only mmo that i stayed playing cause it was just so much fun

Really don't understand how people can say co-op is almost impossible or a bad idea, when games like Valhiem, Palworld and Elden ring exist.
Just having 2-4 player co-op would be a game changer for an open world RPG, you don't need hundreds of players on screen to make it fun.

That reminds me of the days I wanted so bad to play Monster Hunter Oline but was locked to Japan never went worldwide.
But the moment it was available on Chinese servers, with a tutorial I managed to get in there and play for hours and days and weeks then months 😤 until it shutdown.. All I have left are memories with a friend 😭

Obviously we can't get the exact numbers but the only Big Tab targeting MMOs are WoW, FF14, Guild War 2 and Runescape, but mixed in with those are games like BDO, PoE, and Lost Ark which would all be action combat.

Yeah It's sad how in it only stayed up from 2015 until 2019. I already heard about it and i know that it was very successful in Japan.

Why not just have 2 player coop and have each player bring their pawn? It works perfectly. 4 people like always.

Dragons dogma has lock on for mage and sorcerer and magic archer
Also magic knight doesn't lock on but it has homing attacks like magic cannon

Sadly it existed Dragon's Dogma 2 with friends on DDO and there is a revival project for it made by the fans so I hope they eventually complete it and release it. Also DDO had a lock on system but it's more like DMC or Genshin where even though you get a lock on icon it's closer to a soft lock on where it locks your camera to the target but still let you combo and miss just because you were positioned far or just was not facing the correct direction character wise although it is so much more easier to attack and charge at targets and hit specific parts while locked on.

The lock-on system in console games is a standard since Ocarina of Time, the point is to compensate for shittiness of controllers at 3D camera management. The tab target system in MMOs is to compensate for shittiness of server technology, because you can't calculate collision physics for thousands of players and AI enemies at the same time while also resolving conflicts that come from network latency

10 hours into dragon’s dogma: pawns are awesome they’re so smart!
