I for one really appreciate the videoing and sharing of the skill and craftsmanship of this cutting and log placement marksmanship. This is really high-level and should inspire us all to get better. I like the way Reg says "we" cut down. I'm sure the other guys on the crew were also impressed. A Merry Christmas to All!!
Absolute master class.watching your work makes all of us strive to be the best we can.i know it's helped me and I'm working on my 23rd year of climbing.hats off sir
Reg I found my copy of ‘The body language of trees’ the other day that I bought in the 90s and see they are changing hands for £ 250 + now - What a belter of a book
Thanks for doing this for our edification and entertainment Mr. Coates. I know that you don't have to do it. I hope that there is some benefit to you. The best of the season to you, your crew and your close ones. Thanks; Andrew.
Thanks Reg, honestly can’t think of a better way than having a coffee early on a Sunday morning here in Oz🇦🇺, watching u do things that I couldn’t never do.
So cool seeing all the habitat way up there ! Being that I'm IL , USA most I see is raccoon poop and moss ! Lol I did see one of my white oaks , branches 10 inch thick is all ruffed up and debarked like a buck does to trees ? I do have Turkey and Turkey buzzards in my woodlot quite a bit . Great video Reg , Merry Christmas !👍
Brilliant work as always chap, just cracks on no fuss. Your videos are great dude, it’s refreshing to just see someone do their work and take pride and to not see the video turn into a pissing contest about who’s got the better gear and machines (which are no doubt on the tick). You’re a pro at what you do, keep posting your great work 👍
I absolutely love your videos man. Your so cool calm an collective in the trees you were born for this. Reg your a God in the trees brotha 🤟✌👍stay safe
nicely done! Crazy, I climb too. and yet here i am on a Saturday watching climbing videos. lol... i appreciate the time you put in on these videos. you do great work.
yet another short but delightful foray into the work of a man whose venerable experience shines through in every deliberate move and decision. My instructor for CS31 worked with you back in the late 90's in the north of england.... "if you had a bitch of a tree to do, you called in Reg. then you tripled your groundworkers!"
Climbing past multi stem crotches that high up on a dead fir is so sketchy. I know it’s not always possible to take the whole crown if you don’t have a drop zone for it but that was precarious. You’re a pro Reg.
Love this video. You must have been at around 160 up there at the split top. Incredible . Only thing that would make this video any better would be your commentary . I like hearing whatever you have to say as much as watching but I realize you're not here to entertain me lol. Thanks and happy holidays Reg.
Nice job. I have climbed my fair share of dead tress but man. You really have climbed some pretty dead ones. I hope you got your price on that because that’s truly were skill and experience is key
Thanks Reg...never get enough of watching the skills of a craftsman. Yeh the metaverse is not for you. Real life is way cooler. Shalom and Merry Christmas
How do you descend the spar between cuts? Do you spur down, leaving the backup line in place, risking the irritation of having to climb back up if it snags? Or do you rappel down on the long line to the next cut, then find a way to release the long line. Or, do you simply unhook the backup long line, spur down with the lanyard, and reattach the backup at the next station?
I generally just spur down. If its a long way I might take the climb line off, if its short or thin Ill leave it in place and itll just slip down with me. Spurring down takes a lot less effort than spurring up. It just gets painful towards the end of the day
That last cut was very impressive. The size, the placement, the landing. Hey you might want to think about making that a career and start your own business. Btw, who makes that hand saw and how do you like it compared to say a Silky?
REG , YOU go to the limit and on rot and grand fir, some times a fence is not worthwhile, take care , you are strong , just watch that wood. Cheers for now Koala Bob
On you last stem that you tipped..did you choose not to go deep on the undercut to save time and energy on the work involved in the big notch, or just for better control of a 40’ log with a wedge for safety?
That last chunk looked taller than most trees around here, maybe its just the camera angle. Do you prefer a 200' single stem or the wide, multi-stem shorter trees?
I wouldn't say prefer either. I just do what Im presented with. Physically, the tall conifers require a lot more strength and conditioning than shorter hardwoods. Perhaps psychologically too, especially if the tree is comprised or the wind gets up.
G'day Reg, ,will you get that new Saw ported? Cathederal grove I haven't been there since 97 hope to get over there soon all the best for Christmas 👍🇦🇺.
Always love watching your saw control. Super safe and very deliberate.

Reg is such a freakin Beast! One of the best arborists in the world and always get good value from your videos. Thanks for the upload!

Thanks Reg, honestly can’t think of a better way than having a coffee early on a Sunday morning here in Oz🇦🇺, watching u do things that I couldn’t never do.
That wedge cut from 14:20-15:00, bravo man. That’s not easy to do in one try.

Nice job. I have climbed my fair share of dead tress but man. You really have climbed some pretty dead ones. I hope you got your price on that because that’s truly were skill and experience is key
Could sense you wanted that first Chuck slightly to the left. great job.
Great video thanks for shareing 🤙
Great job
Thanks Reg...never get enough of watching the skills of a craftsman. Yeh the metaverse is not for you. Real life is way cooler. Shalom and Merry Christmas
super gnarly, as always
Very enjoyable to watch
Great precision cutting
U couldn't pay me enough to go up there!!! Lol great job
You made that look unbelievably easy !! Nice work 👍👍👍( top of tree didn’t sound too healthy either)
Thanks for showing how u made the face on your last cut.
I gasped a little bit when I saw you put your fingers in the hinge for a second!
I watch your videos with my 3yo son. He wants to become like you.
Damned high Sir!
That was a Master Class ! Awesome skills, how old was that tree? so much moss n lichen on it. Thanks for sharing
I couldn't say. Many of the surrounding Douglas fir trees are 400 + years, but that Grand fir might not even be 100.
AWSOME
What a man 👍 👌
That's how I roll reg. Running the stihl bar on a husqy!😃

Its Korean, I forget the brand. Got it from a regular tool store. The whole thing was cheaper than a silky replacement blade, and easily just as good.
brilliant
Nicely done red coat, err I mean Reg Coates
Perfect
Dude you run a super clean ship, communication and good equipment is unparalleled. What friction device combo are you running?
Nice Reg..
Not much hairs me out anymore, but that top looked knarly. Glad it weren't me up that thing, looked pretty rotten and sketch. Stay safe up there
This so cool
REG , YOU go to the limit and on rot and grand fir, some times a fence is not worthwhile, take care , you are strong , just watch that wood. Cheers for now Koala Bob
Great
Seeing that top, man.
Your bravery = unmatched
P.S. Nice new 550
