Kevin Martin might be best known today as the Bug, but his prolific music career extends far beyond this one moniker.
Kevin Martin AKA the Bug discusses his inspirations, thoughts on the music industry and how, after ten years, he’s finally unleashed his custom-built soundsystem on the world during his lecture as part of Red Bull Music Festival Istanbul 2018.

Over the last 20 years, projects such as GOD, Techno Animal and Ice (all with Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick), King Midas Sound (alongside Roger Robinson and Kiki Hitomi) and some of his latest work with Miss Red and Dylan Carlson of Earth have seen Martin assimilate myriad musical styles - dub, reggae, punk, jazz, hip-hop, dancehall and dubstep, to name a few - and transform them into something truly unique. The one constant across his expansive output is weight: a weight of volume, of bass, of emotion. It's an approach and a philosophy that’s informed just as much by punk as it is by the legendary London soundsystems of Jah Shaka and Aba Shanti-I.

Kev is a great guy. I was lucky enough to play on the same bill for a couple of shows, which included some traveling together, and he was so nice and friendly. Really genuine soul.
Absolute legend
literally was a bout to say the same thing
^^^
when i heard Skeng and Poison Dart around 2008 it was a game changer here in Mexico City, stayed in my heart
that's an amazing story about the ICE album. I was working the night shift at 7-11 at the time it came out and played it pretty much non stop. At this point there are only a few tracks that I still think hold up but it was a damn influential album to me at the time.
Kevin The Don. Underground Legend. Massive Respect.
The burial t shirt completes this
is so tough to survive as underground producer im in the same page even harder in undeveloped coutries like here but you are so right terror keeps me goingi dont have other choice , i feel terrible with a regular job i cant lie to my soul
What a brilliant and inspiring interview. Thanks to all involved.
I want to hear him do an album with a tin can and 1 effects pedal, for me that in itself is an inspirational thing to say. loving his work.
Great interview and informative.
Real talk. Thank you

I've seen the Bug some days ago. My body has been heavily massaged by the bass lines :). I totally understand Kevin's explanation of his approach to volumes and bass lines, as a listener that's exactly the feeling I want to get at such performances.
I got to see this guy next time he comes around. My best memories ever were the biggest sound systems.
im loving the mbv/bug connection, proper cool dude need mo peeps like that in music should at least list the tunes though proper ear drumtease
check the ep he produced for miss red like a month ago, one of the tracks HAD to have been of that ep
Kevin Martin is a Guru. Great interview.
is the bass culture research discussion about soundsystems and setting them up available somewhere to watch ???
Thanks for the interview!
does anyone know where I can hear The ICE album?
czcams.com/video/BMnKn6X0vfQ/video.html
Too short... need more.
Great interview. Who's the interviewer?
Not one single track played!
Due to copyright unfortunately
Due to multi million $ corporation Red Bull nor wanting to pay a few pennies to the artists they exploit
It's more a case of videos getting blocked in certain territories than the revenue from a few thousand views
Can redbull change this prosaic institutional format ? this idol and cult worship is pretty done with today .. Bug or Rug, RedBull should actually impart useful skills, education, facilitate emerging artists, regions and music. After all the organisation makes millions of dollars every year selling a harmful drink.
RBMA is shutting down soon, so I guess your wish is granted.
you don't sound embittered or self-entitled at all.
@@user82938 Is it? How so?
It was not my wish - However RBMA's institutional hegemony is boring.
@@LeGronk There's no need for that - What I pointed out is institutional hegemony and dull chauvinism of sorts. It could change, especially since theres so much new music and talent.
@@AudioPervert1 ugh, spare me your self-serving politics. people like you throw around the word "hegemony" in irrelevant contexts and make the word (and the underlying cause) a joke. what there's no need for is your original post, which smacks of bitterness at others' success. some of us want to hear from these artists and see them get the credit they're due, especially someone like Kevin who has struggled long and hard to get to where he is today. take the piss out of Red Bull all you want, that doesn't matter, but disrespecting the artist is not on.
