  • Shortly after recovering from mental illness and one week before radical surgery to remove his cancerous prostate, bowel and bladder, Chris Livett rode in the 2017 Distinguished Gentleman's Ride.
"Stronger" is Chris' story of using his experiences with mental illness to cope with and move forward from his cancer diagnosis.
    ----
On Sunday September 30th 2018, over 120,000 distinguished gentlefolk in over 650 cities worldwide will don their cravats, tustle their ties, press their tweed, and sit astride their classic and vintage styled motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and men's mental health.
If Chris' story resonates with you, reach out and talk, ask, listen. For further information and services supporting mental health and suicide prevention, visit au.movember.com/mens-health/we...

Damn, I didn't come here to cry. Story is beautifully told. Thank you. Have been suffering for five years even before knowing that what I'm going through wasn't just nothing. Even before knowing that they are called depression and anxiety. And what made it so much harder is that we aren't rich. We don't have the privilege of going to a doctor. I was from a small group of islands in the corner of a developing country. We didn't have money. My parents were also one of the biggest causes of these and they just kept making these things bigger and bigger for me. It's been so hard, sad, painful. But things are getting better now. Meditating and reading self-help books and rewiring my brain really helped a lot. Now I'm about to move to another country. I'm excited to get a job, save up, get myself a motorcycle, and start riding.
Peace out, everyone! Have a beautiful journey ahead!

Since I've been going through prostatce cancer surgery myself, I can only recommend every one going through the same: always be open with it, tell your partner, kids, friends, even these who isn't your nearest friends. Talk about it! All the love to Chris and his family.

Thank you so much. I needed this. My mom died of cancer when I was 11, definitely did not understand or process it correctly. I’ve suffered from mental illness underlying ever since and then Ulcerative Colitis, which can cause colon cancer as well. I feel very connected to you man. These things can tear you apart while it seems like you sit by the sidelines and watch, unaware of what’s really going on or why. This year I have made more positive changes than I ever thought possible and I started riding in March because of it and in celebration of overcoming myself and my experience. You inspire me and I hope to maybe one day ride with you at a DGR. Peace brother.

The first time I've come across another rider who has had the sort of surgery I had. I was lucky in that my cancer was just bladder so I lost that and my prostate but it had got no further so no chemo or anything although it was a close run thing apparently. All that though and mental health issues, mind you I had ME/CFS to deal with too and still do. Anyway all power to him and his family and to all who ride no matter what.

Funny enough, I am about to buy my first motorcycle in 20 years... got married, had two kids, got a car and slowly forgotten how it was to ride my bike, back in the day. Today I visited a motorcycle dealer and saw a beautiful 2015 Triumph Boneville Spirit for sale. It made me check some videos about this special edition bike and well it brought me here. I am glad it did. It is unquestionable that motorcycles bring people together in a different and very unique way. I always remember the many times I was riding my bike and had to stop to gaze in wonder at a landscape, or take notes of something I was thinking while riding that made so much sense, an idea, a resolution...something that rarely happens in the car because of the radio, music, company... I feel like I need it back in my life right now, and videos like this only makes me want to go out and participate in events like the DGR and help in any way possible. Thanks for sharing!

At my lowest, I didn't want to self-delete, but I had self-harm ideation, just enough to just be hospitalized. I just needed a break from myself, the toxic organization I was in and help readjusting to being home from Iraq. Even after 3 years, I was still carrying around all the baggage of what I'd seen and done.
I could hack it, until I couldn't, and that turn came between breaths, literally. Fortunately, my wife was there and she took me to the hospital before I made any unfortunate choices. So now, I make it my mission to be the sledgehammer for those Soldiers in my formation who need help breaking through the stigma the military still puts on those needing help with mental health.
I'm always glad when people find the path forward and find a brighter tomorrow.
