  • NOTE FROM TED: We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. This talk represents the speaker’s personal understanding of and experiences with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and is not yet corroborated by scientific evidence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Zaheen Nanji discusses her experiences with stuttering, and how our self-image can shape our identity. Born in Kenya, Zaheen had a good childhood up until the age of 6, when she was made to skip grade 2 and enter a pilot project. At this point in her life, everything changed. She developed a severe speech impediment, and couldn’t even say her own name without stuttering.
At the age of 15 her parents sent her off to Edmonton, Alberta. She completed her education in Nutrition & Food Science, Environmental Health and Neuro Linguistic Programming. Zaheen didn’t want her speech impediment to stop her from pursuing what she wanted - her work experience in public health and her passion for sharing her story, has inspired her to use her voice even more.
Zaheen is also a recent breast cancer survivor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

One of the best talks I've heard. Time to reframe and change those belief systems! As a stutterer it took me a long time to face this vulnerability and accept this is who I am.

Very inspiring and motivating. I am a stutter and you have addressed my problems: avoiding public speech, not believing in myself and believing I am abnormal. I wish I have a speech therapist here in Nigeria. I hope to speak like you one day

What has helped me tons is reading the book How To Run Your Own Life by Jut Meininger (as long as I apply it I eliminate it completely) (when you read it you'll realize that you have to turn off your Adapted Child state and little by little train your Parent state so your Adapted child doesn't intervene)... you can download it (they don't print it anymore)

Today, natural herbs may seem like an alternative cure, but only few people really know and understand the fact that roots and natural herbs are the best remedy to cure any disease or disorder completely. Thanks to the help of Dr Isibor Alternative Herb’s and cleanser helped overcame stammering I will be honest with you that his medication works.

She stated early in her talk that the NLP System "worked for her." Every stutterer is different, with different beliefs, experiences, and causes of their speech problems. It's a complicated problem which has taken years to work through. I don't think she would claim what helped her would, with certainty, help everyone.
I'm a 65 year old who has stuttered my whole life. I'm going to check out the NLP System, with hope it could help. Basically, what has helped me cope with stuttering is to finally not give a damn what others think about my stuttering. There are days when I'm fluent and days when I'm not. I live with it. I have NO control over other people's reactions and attitudes. But, I can work to control how I react and choose to move through the world. I've needed thick skin to survive and not allow other's negativity to drag me down.
