  • Today's question is:
Can your Carbon bike be damaged by leaving it in a hot car?
On this channel we show marketing free, real information about the bikes that you ride.

Good question and answer Raoul, thanks.
A minor point as it won't make any difference anyway, but a raw carbon fibre (ie black) component in direct sunlight has low thermal conductivity and could expected to be well above the ambient temperature of the air in the vehicle. Having said that, I believe most, if not all, the plastics used in the interior are thermoplastics and even in direct sunlight on the hottest of days will be below their glass transition temperature. So I guess if it's good enough for them, it should be good enough for decent pre-preg that's had the snot baked out of it at high pressure :)

I like the Question of the Day format. Keep them short and sweet.

    Very insightful

Plus, your tyres can explode, which sounds like a gunshot. I've had it happen twice - once in the car, and once in direct sunlight. In fact, the direct sunlight time caused my adhesive-nosed neighbour to assume the worst, and he called the Filth. That was an unpleasant experience.

Great question, great answer. Is UV exposure of concern? Or does the paint offer some protection?

nothing discussed in this video surprised me except for the mention of humidity at higher temperatures, I would have thought that cured resin was absolutely impervious to the effects of moisture. possible next question of the day: Can repeated exposure to rain and dew have detrimental effects on a carbon frame? ( I don't have any carbon wheels, so I just said "frame ".)

You mentioned that the mechanical properties will be decreased at temperatures, will they return as it comes back down to normal temperatures, or are they permanently compromised? For context, I have a track bike that will live in a container outside the track.

Send us a Christmas message on Christmas day, far more interesting than the Queens speech :)

I found that lubricated bearings can become damaged in a hot car as the viscosity of the grease would reduce and run out. Found my bike wouldn't be smooth after being left in the car for some time in summer.

A good question that was. I'm curious to know to what level is the resin UV resistant on raw carbon is there colour change indicators that occur due to prolonged UV at high levels?

Good question, I vote this one for a future question of the day.
The earlier resins definitely weren't UV stable, at least some I know of weren't, that I know for sure. But I'm very interested to hear from Raoul in regard the more recent ones. It used to be an argument for painting CF. Yes I've seen clear coats affected due UV exposure, no idea of the effect, if any, of the underlying resin.

Hi. What about the new REIN4CED carbon-steel layout?

Can I TIG weld in the same room I store my bikes? Will the UV damage the resin? Should I cover them before I start welding?

Hi, can you explain why some canyon carbon bikes don't use expanders in the headset?(I know they don't use one in their aeroad cf slx)
