    I drank because I enjoyed getting wasted and I'm a pretty awkward guy in large social situations (I've gotten much better) which when I was drunk made me a lot more out going. The problem was I went from drinking 3 beers at a party to drinking a bottle of whisky to myself. Soon my fun loving buzz turned into a drunken mess that nobody wanted to be around. Then when I drank by myself I was blacking out. I drank because it was the only thing I knew how to do for fun. At 36 years old I had a 4 year old son and a pregnant wife, if I didn't stop it was going to destroy not only my life but possibly my family as well. After a very bad night of drinking I promised my wife I'd never drink again and I did. I learned over the course of a year to have fun other ways. I started riding BMX and downhill mountaining biking, started 3d printing and building replica props and models, I play a ton of video games and I recently started indoor rock climbing. I'm 6 years sober now and drinking actually sounds boring to me. My point is that sometimes people (like myself) drink because that's their only hobby and then they get hooked. It's a reason for drinking that I almost never hear people talk about and I think is an important topic for people to think about. Good luck to anyone trying to kick the habit no matter what your reason.

      I hear you. My experience has been leaning on alcohol to deal with life problems and then drinking BECAME my hobby; it pushed my other interests aside.
      The bright side is that by drying out I have rediscovered my TRUE passions. I am embracing the things in my life that matter and are not destructive

It's alcohol. I used to make fun of "hard drug" users but then went onto go do coke or meth to stay up because alcohol had me up all night and what I made fun of and swore not to do, I went on to do and it kept me productive just to let my true love, (alcohol), that let me down, keep me up, so that I could then see "her" all over again. Living hell. Wish me luck. Thanks.

I am not the problem, alcohol that toxic drug ethanol is the problem along with society's wide acceptance of it, is the problem! Not only that, but the fact that society and men (in general) use it as a yardstick for masculinity and social acceptance IS the problem. Alcohol does absolutely nothing for me and has no benefit to me. Great video! I am going on 5 weeks sober now, no alcohol. A couple of weekends ago, I met up with some friends who drink. I don't think it would be wise to recommend this to just anyone who is quitting drinking, but I bought a six pack of NA beer, which I have never really done before. To be honest, it put me in the party without breaking my promise to myself. I didn't feel like the odd man out and I stayed sober. It made me realize that maybe I don't need to be drunk to get the social wheels turning.

I’m my best when sober and I’ll let the people who can handle it do it but I know I can’t handle it and that’s completely OK.

      Good choice. Now there are are NA beers that actually taste good. They bring back the enjoyable feelings of relaxing with a beer but no alcohol downside. Be aware that many Advisors that help people to give up alcohol disapprove of NA beers for this reason - it brings back the feelings of drinking. Also, NA beer is usually 0.5% alcohol, not zero, which means you'd have to drink TEN of them to equal one Sam Adams 12 oz bottle. Good luck with that.

  • @mrsnulch
    @mrsnulch Před rokem +18

    Love this, but I think you miss the main reason why most people drink.
    When I was a drinker, I was full aware that alcohol wasn't helping me relax, wasn't helping me be social, was heavily marketed to me, was unhealthy, was poisonous, was a waste of money, etc. The number one reason I drank knowing all of this was because we humans hate being BORED. I considered a night without drinking to be BORING, and boredom is terrifying - that's why solitary confinement is a form of torture. When I poured a drink, I felt like I was having fun.
    To quit drinking, you need to understand that when you feel bored / lonely and reach for a drink, it's the worst way to solve that problem because you're not actually having fun, you're using a fix of a drug to trick your brain that you're not bored, but in reality you're just sitting there poisoning yourself. There are literally a million other things you can do if you feel bored or restless. Go to the gym lol. Learn a new skill, go for a walk, meet new people, pick up a hobby like drawing or painting, even just go to bed at 8pm if you want to and wake up early!

    It is a type of personality that becomes addicted. It is also genetic. My ex husband was an alcoholic who died prematurely after I left. It is also the disease of denial. My eldest son is now an alcoholic much to my despair and is looking for a liver transplant. The worst thing is the terrible damage they cause to their families and other people. They ruin people's lives. I am a normal person whose whole life has been damaged by it. It is WHAT THEY DO TO OTHER PEOPLE.

  • @johnkerr762

    Excellent points. I love the first principles approach. I think that under the hood, people who drink excessively are in some kind of pain (usually emotional) and are self-medicating. As you say, they must realise that alcohol isn't helping, they've been deceived by corporations selling a lie and they will have to dig down and find the real problem. It's never easy, but addressing the root cause of pain and no longer envisioning themselves as someone who needs alcohol to treat that cause, gives a real chance of escaping this slippery slope. Thank you for helping those in pain with your message!

    Man, i don’t have a huge drinking problem (well atleast my drinking didn’t seem to cause any problems) but i still haven’t managed my drinking as well as i wanted.
    I started drinking since i was 15 and where i live it was common that every weekend we would go out and get wasted. That settled a bit after teenage years but still pretty much every time i see my friends, alcohol is included.
    I’m 29 now and after seeing ur other video talking how alcohol is poison and this video, i feel so scammed.
    My latest thing with alchol was destressing with couple of beers after work. Not everyday tho, maybe 1-2 days per week. I gave a permission to get few beers if my workday was bad enough.
    I was so confused about my drinking. I didn’t even have a problem to say im addicted because i knew i kinda was - in my view i wasn’t and alcholic because i could easily have many days or even weeks between drinking. Not shaking or thinking alcohol constantly. But if i had a drink, only thing on my mind was if i can some how get another one. If it wasn’t feasible to get a drink, i was okay with that. But if there was any chance to get another drink, i would walk miles to get just one more beer or make everybodys life that much harder because of that (for example leave the car and make everyone use public transport even tho it was not convinient at all).
    ”Funniest” thing is, no one ever thought i have a problem. In Finland where i live drinking is so normalized that if you can work and binge drinking happens on weekends and preferably not alone, everything is fine. I just had a bit more affinity to alcohol than some more moderate drinkers, but absolutely no problem.
    After 2 weeks not drinking - i don’t still like to work but i don’t have that nagging stress that makes me want to de-stress. My body was just stressed because of the poison i think.
    Feels like a huge veil of lies has been lifted and it seems so silly that people drink fancy gin or fine wine just because it tastes good. Masking poison to taste of something else doesn’t make it non toxic
    I think you do excellent job and i hope you can reach millions of people with your message

    Isn’t it strange that in many countries a drug is defined juridically rather than pharmacologically / toxicologically? These are the first official marketing messages and “truths” coming from authority! Insanity!
    Kids should be taught in school that alcohol is a drug despite whether it is legal or not.

    This is great content as it appeals to my intellect. I've had many variations of relationship with alcohol. Currently, it started up again in response to a divorce. After some months, it's time to get off it. I put on some pounds, all in the belly (gross) and became generally, "soft." Enough. I decided that this weekend will be no more beers, forever. I intend to feel good for the years I have left. Again, great framing of the issue.

    Excellent video! I am currently on day # 6 no alcohol. I also find it funny that even some non drinkers have told me that there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks a week. It is totally an addiction. I will say, I do really like the taste of beer and wine but I am done with it because I know my health is more important. Worst of all, society has normalized alcohol and drinking, it is insane.

What happened to me was that I never admitted that I am alcoholic because I knew it will dragged me to become one forever as that’s my destiny if I believe . I understand that it runs in my family in my gens . I always felt bad for people who believes that about themselves. May people know that they are Gods creations and they have Values and worth and big purpose in life . This revolution helped me to be transformed and have a mind and heart change .

    Alcohol marketing is SO powerful especially in the US where I live. I was in high school when Jersey Shore came out and wow does that show glorify drunkenness! I would invite friends over just so we could get drunk while watching the show. Total idiots we were thinking it was cool to act like The Situation. Ironic the dude's name was Situation bc he adopted both a serious addiction to alcohol as well as pain killers and I think he even got in trouble with the IRS after the show ended. Never believe the facade that is advertised on your TV or social media feeds.

    Im subscribing because i just found your videos. I started drinking around 15. By the time i was 20 i was drinking every day. Drank every day for about ten years straight. Longest i went was 3 months without a drink. Thats when quit smoking. And for about 5 years i would only go out boozing once a month. If that. I got into mountain biking and hiking. Also i ride motorcycles so spent alot of my time doing that. Still wasnt totally happy in life. Never will be i dont think. But i was content enjoying the things i enjoyed. Then had medical issue that caused me to not be able to mountaibike anymore ( for 4 years or so ) and hiking was something i wasnt able to do for long periods of time. lost my good job. And ended up with so much debt ill probably never get out of it. Especially today with the economy. So after 7 years of no smoking and barely drinking drinking. I gave up. Started smoking again and going out drinking multiple times a week. Im finally able to mountain bike again.( I believe ) and go hiking. Got a good job again after bouncing around job to job after 6 years. I only go out on a Friday or Saturday night. But want to stop doing that. But not sure i can do it. The only time i interact with people are at work or at the bar. I really dont have anyone in my life. Everyone i grew up with, friends and family have family and a life of their own. Im 44 now and really dont know a( social ) life outside going out drinking. Even if its 1 night a week. It really ruins my weekend cause i just stay in the day after lying in bed. But im going try to stop. One weekend at a time i guess. When i do work out and exercise i feel alot better. So just gotta prepare my self mentally and start. I havnt had a cigarette in year. But did pick up vaping. That going to stop also. So ill be keeping up on the videos. And will see if i can not go out next weekend. Think maybe ill binge watch Yellowstone after i work out. Wish me luck. Thanks for the videos.

    I know you said alcohol wears off by the next night and it does a bit but through my own research I have discovered that it hangs on a lot longer.
    I had to stop drinking 6 years ago because I started suffering from AF caused by physical exercise (yes really) and alcohol was triggering my arythmia, but now and then I may have a single whisky at Xmas etc but the next day I feel a bit depressed, lack of enthusiasm for life, this feeling hangs on for about 5 days before my enthusiasm returns, I have ran this experiment a few times with the same results, this worries me because my wife drinks every night so she may have 5 days worth of alcohol poison in her system all the time.

    @lexdeobesean Před rokem +1

    Hm. I don't know where I stand in all this. I think I don't drink dangerously much, but enough to perhaps be concerned. I drink beer mostly. I rarely drink whisky, if I do I can last on a bottle for a month. I'm slightly overweight, but still fit. I honestly drink out of habit and taste. I drink more when I'm stressed. It's more comfort feeding than anything imo. If I don't drink beer I drink tea... lots and lots of it. It varies too. I can drink 4 pints a day or 4 pints a week... or nothing for a month. I never drink to get drunk, I hate getting drunk... and I hate hangovers ugh. So I don't go that far. But still... I might be drinking a little too much. It's expensive. The only thing I don't like about beer is that it can bloat me in combination with certain foods... so then I don't drink usually. I feel i can control it mostly. I managed to switch to non alcoholic beer which worked for a while (like a year)... until they stopped selling at my nearest store. So yeah for me it's honestly more just habit and association with the drinking I did in the past... plus I truly enjoy the taste. I'm trying to figure out for myself if it is causing issues for me. I'm more concerned about fast food tbh.
    Good video btw!

    Great concept for a service. Thanks. I'm not sure I agree with point no. 3. Many people have problems that they don't confront - issues in their past, feelings of guilt, lack of courage in pursuing their dreams, lack of satisfaction, etc, and they turn to alcohol to "patch over" those things - it only makes things worse, of course, which is why they only drink more. But still, they have underlying problems. Alcohol "allows" me not to confront my problems and I construct my life around alcohol - e.g. I invest in property now rather than invest in building my business, because due to my drinking, I'm no longer able to run a sophisticated business, but I can still take rent and maintain a veneer of success.

    Thanks man very thought provoking stuff , been drinking since I was very young . Started with sips from my old man gave me who was a wine maker and when I got a bit older we use to steal our parents wine and then I stopped then picked it up again at 18 and haven't stopped since 46 now and still drink lol . Been a drug user also but clean of that shit these days , just still on the piss almost everyday dealing with a rare disease which as destroyed me tbh . Its quite painful so I find the drink helps and not sure what else I can use to stop the pain . I use eye drops but they only help so much and I just feel like utter crap without booze . I don't think no one can help me tbh . My gf hates my drinking but she has no idea the shit I have to put up with . Dry eye disease really fcks with ya mind and takes a huge toll on ya and feeling good . It helps me escape my reality , that's why I continue to drink . I don't even like drinking now . Its just a detraction from my real issues . My old man was a real nasty drunk also , he was crazy as fuck tbh , one day he stabbed himself through the hand into the table with his pig sticker in front of me .I should of taken that as a sign back then but I chose to ignore it I guess . A pig sticker is a dagger used for hunting wild boar if ya didn't know . It has been said by many people their is no hope for me more or less . I'm kinda fcked tbh . I'm very self centered and don't give a fuck about anyone or anything more or less , I'm a skateboarding fps online gaming addict for years now , hard to brake away from my ego which controls my thoughts . I do care about my gf and friends and family tho . I just have this crazy ego that doesn't care about me personally . Its like I'm my own worst enemy . I have tried rehab and AA before . I'm a real ticking time bomb more or less . Done many stupid things over the years I'm ashamed of also . I use to be a real nice person before I started drinking . It just took hold of me and I could never brake away from it . It just became a normality for me drinking
