As a Viet vet turned tree-hugging peace-lover I can't say enough about "Bring 'em Home" except I hope that Pete lives another 90 years so he can keep us folks on the right side (no war, no hate, no hunger, no sadness). Sing it, Pete!
My grandpa told me this story about when he was in a hospital in Vietnam recovering from a bombing injury, this song came on a portable radio that a soldier in the bed next to him had, and everyone in the hospital started to sing along quietly. He said it was the moment he realized that fighting there wasn't going to solve anything, so he came home and became a peace activist. I always think of him when I hear this song. :)
This man has more balls than any self-styled subversive groups singing today. And big ups to Johnny Cash for letting Pete sing this song on his show. Nobody would sing this song on TV today.
I second that. Cash admired Pete although he may not have agreed with all of his opinions. He did admire the courage of his convictions. Also, Pete had Johnny and June on this show, "Rainbow Quest" back in the early 1960s. Definitely three giants of American Music: Johnny, Pete, and June.
Johnny may have been a little more 'left of center'(and definitely 'hip') than the 'Music City Corporatist' right wing bent of the (probable) majority of his fans. Just listen to the lyrics of his narrative story song "Man In Black". MUCH MORE Woody Guthrie than Koby Teith!! ;)
This man has done the exact diametrical OPPOSITE of "selling out" his ENTIRE life!! The only minute critique I've EVER had of him is the apoplectic hissy fit he threw about Bobby Zimmerman going 'electric' during the Newport Folk Fest of 1965, but then again, he might have been worried that one of his proteges (and that festival) was in the process of 'selling out'. ;)
@@walrusi7994 WHY must you bring religion/hatred into the discussion?? NO ONE has brought up Pete's (or any other artist's) 'spiritual' views, IF he even had any at all (??) over his lifetime/career.
@@walrusi7994 Even IF that is the case, what PROOF do you have that Dylan, either then, OR now, or anytime in between was an abject "Zionist" (even IF he claimed so, as anything he says must be taken with the proverbial 'grain of salt')? Pete Seeger was one of the finest human beings on this earth and I admire him so much that I have learned the Seeger strum in less that 6 months and am now playing public performances as a Seegerist, bringing this song to thousands more. Damn right.
Who's watching in 2021?
If you love your Uncle Sam
Bring them home, bring them home
Support our boys in Vietnam
Bring them home, bring them home
It'll make our generals sad, I know
Bring them home, bring them home
They want to tangle with the foe
Bring them home, bring them home
They want to test their weaponry
Bring them home, bring them home
But here is their big fallacy
Bring them home, bring them home
I may be right, I may be wrong
Bring them home, bring them home
But I got a right to sing this song
Bring them home, bring them home
There's one thing I must confess
Bring them home, bring them home
I'm not really a pacifist
Bring them home, bring them home
If an army invaded this land of mine
Bring them home, bring them home
You'd find me out on the firing line
Bring them home, bring them home
Even if they brought their planes to bomb
Bring them home, bring them home
Even if they brought helicopters and napalm
Bring them home, bring them home
Show those generals their fallacy
Bring them home, bring them home
They don't have the right weaponry
Bring them home, bring them home
For defense, you need common sense
Bring them home, bring them home
They don't have the right armaments
Bring them home, bring them home
The world needs teachers, books and schools
Bring them home, bring them home
And learning a few universal rules
Bring them home, bring them home
So if you love your Uncle Sam
Bring them home, bring them home
Support our boys in Vietnam
Bring them home, bring them home
Wish more millennials listened to this type of music like I do
