Thanks Know How Know I'm so glad to see more women teaching women like me that we can do repairs and save money. You are awesome ⭐
You are welcome. Thank you for the kind words. Best wishes for the cable replacement.
I like your video edit style. Keeping it simple and zooming in on each part. Instead of wandering around the garage and having a shaky camera and saying ummmmm. Lol pretty good quality, nice repair aswell
Thanks for the compliment. I do my best to give good advise & not waste your time... or be too boring! lol.
Just a "me too" on the shooting and editing style. I was not left wishing I could see some of the little bits and pieces.
Now off to see about the safety cable for the spring, which my door does NOT have (yikes).
Nice clear video, short but with sufficient detail, thank you for making this and your others.
Thanks for the compliment. I try to make the videos accurate and helpful. If you haven't already subscribed to the channel, please support the channel and subscribe. It's free, subscribers will help me continue to make more videos.
Agree, clear, easy to follow video that provided the green light for me to go forward. For me though, I found it easier to proceed in the opposite direction. That is, first attach the looped cable end into the door, then run the bare end of the cable through the pulleys. Now attach the bare end through to 3 hole clip and attach the S hook onto the third hole of the clip. Finally, grab the assembly by the S hook and attach it to the door bracket from which it was removed.
Wow, the info in this video is just what I needed to know. I’m replacing my door lift motor for a belt drive, but need to fix the binding lifting cable and damaged pulley bearings first. The right detail without the fluff. Thank you kindly!!!
You are welcome. I do my best to make quality videos.
The clearly spoken direction was very helpful! Much more confident to fix it myself!
Good clear video. Helped me a lot. I had to take off the bottom section to straighten it out after an accident with the car. I took the hinges off with the garage door partly down, and they flew up and caught on the next hinge. After straightening the door, I could not get the bottom hinges back on again, because of all the tension. And I couldn't lift the door back up either--too much for my 75-year-old arms.
Finally I figured out that I could separate off each of the top three sections, and push them up out of the way one at a time. That allowed me to put the final bottom section into the up position where the tension was off it. Then reattached the hinge and cable as you show. Things went smoothly after that, and it raises and lowers like butter now. Thanks for the informative video. It helped a despairing DYIer get himself out of a jam, without calling for help.
Hi Larry. Thank you for taking the time to write about the garage door repair. Thank goodness you were able to straighten out the panel. Way to go!
Great video!!! My only hold up was I assumed I needed an 8ft cable so when I removed the fray cable I needed the 12ft cable which provided me the little extra I needed. Kept my laptop with me and reviewed each step you offered. All done! Many thanks!
You are welcome, Nick. Thanks for the compliment. It's always great to hear the the video was helpful.
My cables home are extra.
I wonder if tou can get the 12 the cout remaining to look neat.
Great How to with very good step by step instructions. Saved me time and money.Thank you.
You are welcome, Collin. Thank you for taking the to time write some kind words.

Perfect video, thanks! Not a tough job and the clear step-by-step eliminated any guesswork for me.
It's my pleasure, Joshua. Thanks for taking the time to write the kind words.
Nicely done. The springs and pulleys on my door are the same. Very informative and helpful. Thanks!
You are welcome, Anthony! Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to comment. It's always nice to hear the videos are helpful.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a clear video on how to do this!!
It's my pleasure to help. Have a great day.
Very good video. The best I've found on this type of garage door.
Loved the attention to detail, the steady pace and camera, no steps missed, and no time wasted on any step. [+Subscribed]
Thanks for taking the time to comment, the compliment and for subscribing. I do my best to make quality videos that are worth the time spent watching them.
I see 4 years have gone by, according to the comments here, but your video is super simple, well explained (pleasantly voiced) and very informative. I'm a 72 year old man and I've waited over a year to fix and replace my broken pulley cable.
I considered paying someone; but I took a look at how it works normally and thought, "I bet there's a CZcams video that will show me exactly what to do!"
Then I found yours at the top of the search and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Of course, my door's brackets, cables and general area are quite dirty and full of cobwebs and a bit of rust.
My first task is to clean it all up so I can see what I'm doing. LOL!
I've already changed the springs and *safety* cables on my other door (double garage) without any issues, so thanks to you, I'll be able to replace this pulley cable relatively easily.
Thanks again for a great video.
I *liked* it and I'll subscribe to your page, too. :-)
thanks,
Rick White
Hi Rick, thank you for the note and for subscribing. I enjoy hearing from people who watch the videos. Best wishes for the cable replacement.
Thank you for the video. I almost paid someone to do it for me but your video made it super simple!
You are welcome, Sean. Way to go on the successful repair! It's always nice to hear that the video has been helpful.

Super fabulous video. Was nervous to change cable however this video made this task less stressful. A+++++++ Thank you!
You are welcome, Mark! I too was nervous the first time I replaced one. Once you understand when there is tension on the cables and how to keep the heavy door from dropping it's easy to replace a cable without hurting yourself or wrecking the door.
Excellent video. Thanks very much for posting.
You are welcome, Mark. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.
Very descriptive. Thank you for taking the time to share

Thank You! A very helpful video.
You are welcome.
Great video! Very informative and concise.
That's for the compliment, Leonel!
That you very much, awesome video. I enjoyed the slow speaker and very clear speaker, I understood immediately how the mechanism works.
You are welcome. My aim is to explain how it works, thanks for the confirmation. I feel is is very important to understand how the door works, if you don't, a bad choice could cause harm. If you understand how it works you can safely make this repair.
Good video. If the cable you're replacing is already broken it complicates measuring the old cable to get the correct length. I found that getting the broken cable detached from the bottom of my door to be much more difficult as the original loop wasn't large enough to get it over the stud on the bottom bracket and had to cut the loop to get it off.
Was looking for this configuration , Great job . Liked and Subscribed.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, watch the video, like and subscribe!
Thank you - a very clear explanation!
You are welcome, Daniel.
Pretty straight forward. Thank you! All other videos at the wide pulley, but yours was like mine.
You are welcome! It's my pleasure to help.
Very good explanation. Thank you.

Great video. Thank you for the confirmation

Great video - very helpful!
Thanks for the compliment, Colleen!
Thank you!! Hoping this helps me change my cable. At least I have hope now!!
You are welcome, Cheryl. I do my best give you all the information you need to complete a repair. I don't remove any comments that point out errors or missing steps. So, far, everyone that has commented has made a successful repair. If the cable is too long & you need to cut the cable and don't have cable cutters you can cut it with a hammer & cold chisel. Here's a link to a video I have showing how to do it: czcams.com/video/WzUhIlnvwZg/video.html
You are wonderful . Thank you for your video.
You are welcome, Kenny. It's my pleasure to help.
I needed to perform same operation for replacement. nice video werll made
You are a master teacher.

The video was very helpful thank you
You are welcome, Jerry. Have a great day.
Great camera spotlight on project. Great ability to JUST DISCUSS HOW-TO, without all the other unnecessary introduction and needless chatter. Guy appeared at my mom’s house trying to charge her $1,700 for the repair and $4,000 for a new door, all she needed was a $8.95 cable for Home Depot!! 😡 I will repair it myself tomorrow, thanks for the tips.
You are welcome, Bev.
Great Job! Thanks!

I have never seen Springs like this but it doesn't matter you certainly have Springs like that!
Thank you! I just fixed mine in about a half hour... and the men said I couldn’t do it! Lol
Way to go! Good job, I hope you had some money riding on it. lol!
I know this was 4 years ago…great for you! Never let them tell you that you can’t; all the more satisfying when you do😉
Excellent video, thank you.

Thanks for you support!
I need me a wife like this. One that knows how to get the job done. This is a real mans woman.
lol.
Saw this and follwed until the end. Very good video. Do you have one for the safety cable as well? It seems pretty straight forward but seeing the great job here, I thought maybe you had a simple way to remove and reinstall the safety cable.
Hi Rick see link below to the video. BTW if you click on the channel name & then the playlists tab, the videos are organized by topic.
czcams.com/video/x0IT1gzPquQ/video.html
Great video. It looks fairly simple. The only issue I ran into is in getting the correct cable. Bix box stores only carry the cable extension cord which is not the same as the door cable. Any thoughts or suggestions.
There are some good suppliers on line, I'll put a link to one I have used. I've also bought parts from local garage door companies in the past. ddmgaragedoors.com/parts/
Thanks
You are welcome.
Great video. Do you think that if one cable breaks you should replace both cables at the same time?
I would change both in most cases. The door in the video was not installed properly and one side frayed. In that case, fixing the defect and just changing one side might make sense.
hi! So that knot you made at 04:23 - that's good enough for it to hold? The current cable I had that broke had the loop at both ends, granted it was over 10 years old. All the new ones I see do not have the loop at both ends, but it does have that 3-holed metal connector. Is that black tape at the end? thanks in advance...
Yep, the knot shown will hold. I put electrical tape on the cut end of the cable to stop it from fraying/cover the sharp edges.
About to do this on the job but there's only enough room on both sides of door for me to get one hand up there so ile be having fun in a few hours
Have fun, Steve. lol.
She did the best description I always responded better to female teachers.
Thanks for the compliment. I have more garage door repair videos (and other home repair videos) you can find by clicking on the channel name. All the videos are organized by playlist.
Same
I changed my cable . Great video . The only problem that I’m having is the door doesn’t close completely. Any suggestions? Thanks
Does it close all the way with the opener disconnected? If yes, then there is an adjustment on the opener that changes the door close distance.
These ones must be an ancient set up, mine does not use springs just cable working off a center tension spring that winds the cable when lifting door.
Hi Jerry thank you for taking the time to comment. It's not an ancient set-up. I just bought and installed a new door and it came with extension springs, not torsion springs. IMHO, the extension springs are a little safer for a home owner to work on.
I am repairing an extension cable setup where it appears the original installer did not set things up correctly. When closed, the extension spring is stretched over 70" and all of the extension springs I have seen are supposed to be a maximum of 67" at full extension. Adjusting by attached the spring lower on the bracket hasnt helped since at its lowest, it is still stretched 69" and now the pulleys rub on the door. Is there a rule of thumb for how much slack to leave for the clevis pulley?
If the tension is correct, you should be able to "balance" the door. If the door is opened about 1/2 way (with the opener detached) you should be able to let go of the door & it should stay in that position. Adjust the cable length until the door balances. If it won't balance, maybe the wrong size spring is installed. I have a video that shows how to weigh the door, click on the channel name and look through the playlists.
The pulleys should not rub while the door is moving. If they are rubbing maybe the angle is not correct & you may have to change the position of where the spring is attached to the vertical hanger. I'm suggesting these ideas because you indicate that the installer may have been learning their craft on your dime. If you observe, think the problem though & have some common sense & patience you can solve the problem. Good luck!
Thank you. I took your advice and was able to reattach new springs properly and get the door balanced. The previous owner of our house had it done so I didnt have the luxury of watching anyone so your videos sure helped. Now that I know how, I feel like I need some more garage doors to fix. lol
You are welcome. Way to go on getting the problem solved. My door was not installed properly & never worked correctly. The door in the video is gone, a member of my household couldn't wait for the door to fully open & backed into & bent the bottom panel. I needed a faster opener! lol!
installed a new door. When I put the new track up, I found the the jambs are not square & realized that the old track was not square. I put new jambs up(the old ones were too narrow & split) & squared the new track with a shim, the new door works great.
Did you install safety cables?
Yes, there is a video on how to do it. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/x0IT1gzPquQ/video.html
My door is too heavy to lift manually
no power, old rope style
Why do you think it's necessary to speak like a robot?
And why do you think it's necessary to demean someone who is trying to help you fix your garage door?
Know How Now So nice to hear clean, fluent English. Thank you very much for the informative and easy to understand video.
@@Know-How-Now Thank you for the video. Love it.
