Hello. thoroughly enjoyed this lecture. I must say, reading some of the texts, seeing CZcams videos etc, it strikes me that ABR is especially useful for qualitative research in context of social practice/participation? What if an artist wants to use ABR to understand art making within online communities, or specific case studies that are not in contact with the artist? what is it then, (I'm the artist :)), doest it mean I will have to come up with some functional, external action? your discussion of the self and identity (as you've interpreted it through Leavy's texts) is exactly what I am after with my own research. I am trying to understand social media portraiture through this exact perspective, but without engaging with the audience with questions or interview, I am not a psychologist or psychoanalyst. I am an artist. trying to understand self-portrait making as self-making in the virtual realm; by creating in practice a textile sculpture with an Instagram profile (gg Frankenstein). The thing that strikes me the most from reading the latter is that is usually not used a means to understand art making, but as means of transforming. And what if I am looking for understanding art-making from ABR? Or would you not use ABR for art's sake, but more for people's sake (although I would argue it is the same...). Many thanks again, I hope I'm not blubbering too much. Maya

Great questions Maya!! Let me start by saying there could be a difference between *research* and *art* (at least at the surface level). The goal of research is often to expand understanding or knowledge about a process or experience by collecting data about the process or experience. Art, on the other hand (but not exclusively), seems to attempt to either create a unique experience (within the creators or those witnessing/viewing the art) OR understanding an experience by engaging in a lived portrayal of the experience (through visual art, poetry, sculpture, digital art, etc.). The creation of art also often seems to be done for a variety of reasons, from raising social awareness to raising consciousness to exploring one's own personal interior world (or all of the above!). However, as becomes apparent, there is much overlap between *research* and *art*. Both explore lived experience. Maybe one difference is that research holds as its audience other researchers, the academic world, and professional practitioners (nurses, counselors, doctors, etc.). Artists often have the general public as the audience. SO, that said, would using ABR help you as the artist? Possibly, and there is another practice which might be worth looking at: Art Practice as Research (this is also the title of a book). APR is using the art process as a means of research, with research being written up (or performed) in some way to heighten knowledge about an experience. Take a look at that - might also be of interest. And, it is nice to meet you. Glad to see others out there are also trying to look at the intersecting fields of art and research!

@@ryanrominger9090 Thanks so much for your answer! I will certainly get the book. I am an artist-researcher, doing my second year of doctoral studies at UAL and looking for the right method for my project, which seems like is going to evolve out of ABR but not by using already established methods, rather, finding my own way. Would it be ok to drop you an email? I will keep following your work and thank you again. Great to connect and please keep doing the work you are doing helping researchers finding their way ;)

@@mayaamrami856 HI Maya. Yes, please do drop me an email. Were you able to find it? You can also message me on Facebook. I am hesitant to put my email here as bots could pick it up. Regarding method, that could be the best route - to forge a new method based on your needs. I started that with my own dissertation, putting together types of ABR and hermeneutics, but ended up delving more into intuitive inquiry as my primary and ABR as my secondary methods. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you and wish you well on your research!
