The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel czcams.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.
Amazing trip, WOW, 4dayer is probably pricey but worth it, thx for sharing, new scriber here, heading down from Idaho to hopefully get on the Bite, grew up fishing those waters, alot of toad tuna, vagabond is the boat? 👍🎣. Nothing better then the HOOK UP.
If I were coming from Idaho, I’d do a longer trip if you can. The odds of getting into the fish are better. If you do a one day trip, there’s a chance that that one day can Bo an off day or bad weather. Just a thought. Better book ahead. The good boats fill before the season even starts
@@artemisadventures1734 thank you, I'll be down for a long while, I've got family down there, I'll get on a few boats for the hit or miss, I'm moving to Texas after the trip, maybe I'll see you out there!! Tight lines 👍
Love seeing you using the Shimano talica reels. I have the talica 50 2 speed, 2 talica 16 2 speed, 1 talica 25 2 speed, and 1 talica 12 2 speed. They are some of smoothest reels I have used.
Is that a Tiburon T-Bar Lite on the Talica 20 you are using? @ 15:35 … and great video, love your commentary giving the background and situations, especially highlighting how tough it can be at times but you gotta be at the rail to get bit.
Go to my videos. There’s a video that shows how I did the sinker rig. This was last years video. A lot of guys are doing the drop shot rig now. You might want to look into that method too.
I USED TO GO OUT ON THE QUALIFIER 105 AND DAMN I REALLY MISS THOSE DAYS. BUT AFTER I GOT REALLY SICK FROM CANCER I MOVED UP TO OREGON BUT MAN I REALLY MISS GOING OUT FOR TUNA.
Hey Fred, there’s some really awesome albacore fishing out of Oregon and Washington. And they’re day trips. Hopefully you can get out there to do that!
I’m guessing that you’re talking about the knife jigs? If so I honestly think it doesn’t matter. What does matter is being at the right depth at the right time. So, mark your line to know your depth. With that said, if I had to pick a color, I like the silver ones with fat stripes of glow in the dark bands.
Dude, I don’t know. I picked it up from Squidco in San Diego. I was fine with the original handle but it corroded through and broke. I think the talicas have an issue with that. I’ve seen a bunch of corroded handles.
Hard to say what will be biting that far out but I almost always bring a 30, 40, and 80 lb setups. I like two speed for all these line weights. I like the penn fathoms and graftech rods for entry level gear (still pricey though) and penn torques with Calstar or United composite rods for better stuff. Honestly, there’s a lot of good gear out there now. And I vote for white braid so you can see it.
@@artemisadventures1734 thanks for your response. I am thinking of making a trip down south to hit up a couple tackle shops to buy gear. My local tackle stores up in the SF Bay Area mainly have salmon and bass gear.
@@artemisadventures1734 The meat on these trips is usually just as good if not better than restaurant quality -- they try their best to give you a great product.
Just watched the video and called Mike shortly after...am booked for August 2023 with good buddies Dan and Chris..Can't wait! Thanks.
It’s a great operation
What a great trip and a great commentary... I love fishing SoCal and really enjoyed your video. Thank you very much
Appreciate the comment! This motivates me to make more.
Nice job putting this together 👍. I remember the multi day albacore runs out of Oceanside.

Nice of you to share . Congratulations
Thanks Ahmad!
Love your commentary! Hope you make more of these kind of videos.
Thanks John! Appreciate the feedback! I have a couple more days of fishing to edit and get out. More are coming.
This awesomely awesome! Thanks for putting that together!
Thanks Bill. It takes some effort to do these videos. Appreciate the kind words.
Awesome video fellas, missed you this year but will be back next year!

Going on a 2 day for bluefin in may, can’t wait!
I’m starting to get excited for the new season!

A good masseuse should be along for the ride!! Can you imagine the $$ she would make after a full day of wrestling tuna?
Nice job putting this together
Thanks
Solid Video, looking to do a 3 trip next year and this is one of the picks. Thanks for putting this together.
Mike Lacke is a bad ass captain
That was really nice of you to hand off that last hook-up. Sometimes it's tough just to get bit.
Lackey, chowder, fluffy, joe,Addam all of em make this the best boat in S.D
They’re a great crew!
7:00 sounds like the Wazzup commercial from back in the day

It’s always funny the shouters then bang they bust off all talk no tackle sense
Fish bust off sometimes. It happens…
Do you wanna be on record holding a White Claw......🤣🤣🤣
AA, wow! What some action! I just found your channel and subscribed!
Yeah buddy! Thanks.
I subscribed back
The big drum in the way would drive me nuts
Big drum? At the anchor?

Yeah, you’re right on the handle. The stock one corroded so I had to get a new one. This is what Squidco gave me.
“Time at the rail”!!
awesome
Big fish
great vid! how was your sinker rig set up? tia!

Hey Fred, there’s some really awesome albacore fishing out of Oregon and Washington. And they’re day trips. Hopefully you can get out there to do that!
So how much of the meat do you get to keep on these tuna runs? It’s been my experience there’s a percentage involved.
I’ll guess 25% of the fish weight. So, a lot!
Which color do you love???

Awesome video! What’s the custom handle on your talica 20?
Dude, I don’t know. I picked it up from Squidco in San Diego. I was fine with the original handle but it corroded through and broke. I think the talicas have an issue with that. I’ve seen a bunch of corroded handles.
Did anyone try throwing a popper or an iron at those boiling fish?
We threw EVERYTHING we had at them! Sometimes I hate BFT. All show and no go. I think we hooked one on a colt sniper in that foam.
I have a 3 day trip booked for may of next year. May I ask what are your setups for rod and reel pairings?
Hard to say what will be biting that far out but I almost always bring a 30, 40, and 80 lb setups. I like two speed for all these line weights. Were you fishing in the fog that night (24:00) ?
I don’t remember it being foggy…
What month was this?
Early July. I think later in the season is better though. If you’re planning a trip. I think September is probably the best month.
What was the name of that reel that the handle broke off?😁
Shoot, I forget. I think Talica. I think they’re known for corrosion on the handles. I had one bust on me
@@artemisadventures1734 they don't make them like they used to,I miss the old Penns, and Newell reels.
$100 says it wasn't those gorgeous Maks! 😁💯
🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰
Drop the fish on the floor crack the meat inside the fish ,no bleed and dress the tuna, gonna be poor quality !!
Don’t forget the gaff to the top loin. If it makes it any better, they do get dressed and put into a cold salt brine right away.
@@artemisadventures1734 The meat on these trips is usually just as good if not better than restaurant quality -- they try their best to give you a great product.
140 lbs? Your weight?
Not that bft that’s for sure. Maybe 90 lbs.
Weight was from the processor then add 12% for the blood and guts. I didn’t eyeball this one. I will say that the camera doesn’t do it any justice.
And that giant lid sticking up all in the way, 4 days hitting that thing, no thank you.
It may look bad but it was never an issue. The Vagabond is a comfortable boat to fish on.
I hate when they slam these fish down on the deck. Especially when they dont walk the fish down to the back deck, less clean up when the bites hot.
Yeah, it’s not ideal. I can’t tell a difference in the meat from one side of the fish though. At least I can’t tell…
