Filming a pride of lions as they take down an adult giraffe is a complex - and risky - undertaking. Just what does it take to shoot a documentary in the kingdom of these magnificent animals?
Join multi-award-winning filmmaker Owen Prümm as he reveals life on the other side of the lens. From a bush camp shared with lions in Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park, to remote cameras and very close encounters, he shows us the challenges and joys of capturing this untouched wilderness on film.

Hi Glen, thank you so much for your kind words! We too, let's spread the word about it! 🙌
This is some of the best video cinematography I have seem with lions. Owen does an amazing job working in his perspective and of the lions in their lives and interactions they have with each other. It is cool seeing lions in their daily lives and how they interact with the environment.
Totally, it's so fascinating, it's almost like experiencing life from their perspective!
Amazing work! I cannot imagine living around lions like this, it looks exciting and scary at the same time!
🦁
i'm somehow more concerned about the heat and solitude... also, that huge buffalo!
My thoughts exactly!!
🦁
This was awe-inspiring! Huge props to Mr. Owen Prümm for this footage and his exceptional hard work 👏
Yesss, we're so happy to have him on board!

Hi Steve! We're so happy to hear that! It's amazing to have Owen working with us, so inspiring!
Excellent video! I've always really enjoyed the behind the scenes parts at the end of BBC's nature documentaries, so I'm glad you guys did this as well. Such a fascinating look to see how this footage is captured, and to see people living/working among wildlife. And honestly, your Ruaha videos on lions feature some of the best lion footage I've seen. Amazing job!
Hi Bryce! That's amazing to hear, thanks for the feedback and for watching our videos! 🦁
@@terramater anytime!
Great work, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching it! 🙌
You are living the best life brother.. I'm proud of you.
i wonder how a typical week goes by for owen...what time does he wake up? how many hours does he spend filming? where does he get his food and water from? does he bathe? what about electric power and fuel for the jeep? seems like a pretty crazy amount of logistics... on top of the crazy heat and solitude!
but wow, the view everyday must be heavenly. even then, that bit about getting demoralised when hit by dry spells in filming... that in itself is a whole world to document. did our forefathers experience such periods too? what did they do to raise their spirits? this man's diary must be a treasure trove!
Thank you for your insights! We're very happy to have Owen onboard!
This video was incredibly moving, you got me thinking about my own life a lot too, thank you so much!
That's so sweet, thanks for watching our videos!
What an amazing story..
We're glad you liked it!
I’m sitting here in San Diego, California on this Friday the 13th of October 2023, enjoying this magnificent video you made. Incredible how you seemingly gained the trust of the mighty lions, and the day the 3 different prides converged to feed on the giraffe must’ve been wondrous to witness. Thank you for what you do.
Hi Peter! Thank you for your kind words and for watching our videos! 🙌

Hi TiT! Indeed a once in a lifetime experience! 🦁🎥
One word, Amazing!
Hi TiT! Thanks a lot! 💫
Much respect for all of you who takes the time to film these scenes🎉❤ I don't understand how you can ride around in open vehicles and not be attacked, strange
Hi Barry! He managed to get the trust of the lions! Thanks for watching our videos :)
It's simple. I live in the neighboring county of Kenya.
We have loads of wildlife similar to Tz. Lions in the game reserves have habituated themselves to view safari vehicles as part of the environment. After all, tourists get to see wildlife in similar vehicles.
But make no mistake, once you put your foot down you are prey.
Even the filmmaker should not make the mistake of thinking that just because the lions are used to his presence that they are now best buddies and can now hold hands/paws and sing kumbaya my Lord till dawn.
Leave that to the Masai....
Thank you Owen for the great footage of the Lions! I can only imagine how intense it was to get a lot of this footage from these beautiful creatures. I hope to watch more of your work.
Thanks again! Tim 😊

8:40-9:05 that was inspiring!
Hi TiT! Glad you think so!
Awesome Vid, I have lived in Africa all my life yet traveled the world extensively, there is no more beautiful, stunning, peacefully yet savage at the same time than the African bush, AWAY from the tourist traps. Always remember, out in the bush, “your space” is still their space. I would not want my children at that age to be so freely exposed to the big cats, they will always recognize them as the weakest and go for them should anything occur. Finally, I have observed many lion hunts, you see unbelievable things, they are able to materialize out of seemingly nowhere, their initial charge speed cannot be done justice on film, I have been charged by a lion, one second he he 100m away, the next second he is on top of you, you can’t even believe it’s the same lion, the first time one roars close to you unexpectedly in the pitch dark is something that will be embedded in your memory bank forever, those hairs that don’t stand straight up just fall out, they are such majestic beasts
Hi Reeve! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!
Amazing Footage! out of curiosity... how old is this footage? (if any at all...), I was wondering what camera ecosystem was used for this particular post ... Thank you! big fun of your channel! 👏
Hi! The series was released in 2018 :)
@@terramater I see.. I was asking because the gear he is using... don't get me wrong: his footage is as always! stunning! 👏 Just that the cameras are outdated I think... they look like cinealtas or varicams from early 2000's ... 🤔 this is not a critique! ;) Love his work! (Bastard King is epic!) just curious! :) Thanks!
I wish this was 2 hours long
We totally get you! Happy to know you liked it!
0:23 Look at those muscles.
This was a lovely film but far too short.left me wanting more info.i have seen some of owens films i think 3 i,ve seen and all were just fantastic.filming scenes that had never been done before but watching this short film of how its done is even more incredable.i take my hat off to you.hopefully when people see these films they will fight to save lions because if we dont we will loose all the big cats..thank you.
Hi Ashley! Owen is really incredible, we're so happy with his work! Thanks for the feedback and for watching it!
where can i watch all his documentary

Grate video. Why didn't the lions try to approach/invastigate you after a while when they realized that you were no threat? They are usually curious.
Hi Rex! Well, they saw him as an ally, they realized that they could use the shadow of his car to rest, for example, so they were also interested.
There is a saying, you live long enough to see yourself become the villain but for this unsung hero in particular, he film lion long enough that he is seen as lion not just by the lions but also the buffaloes😅.
Think it would ever be possible to release the raw, unedited footage from the buffalo and especially the giraffe hunts?
Hi @Shinzon23! You can see it from another perspective from the final documentary: www.natgeotv.com/za/shows/nationalgeographicwild/lion-kingdom
@@terramater seen it. Was talking the unedited stuff your guys shot
Lions are very impressive. It's kinda sad that adult males kill cubs. But some of those cubs will just grow up to do the same
In the end, it's all about instincts, nature is indeed brutal!
They kill those cubs to ensure that their genes will take over the pride(that they took over/won) Also, doing so puts the females back into heat. And the cycle continues, and gene diversity and survival of the fittest pushes through.
You're the true king of the jungle. 🏋️
🤴
What is all this closeness to the world of these wild beasts and intrusion into their private world?
11:10 As a casual photographer, this drives me insane! Get out of my shot people!!!!
Bruh being that close to lions in a car with no doors is insane 😂
Would you do it? 😉🎥
No words to say. Extraordinary 🫶🏻
Thank you, Hemanth! ❤️
brutal
Nature is brutal!
Whats the difference between this guy and Timothy Treadwell. Why is his work respected and not Timothy’s.
8:30 It looks like he left the back door unlatched in the first part of the video. Then it is latched when he drives by and it looks a little odd. ALso part of this video reminds me of a top Scott video where the bear "eats" the go pro and films himself. 👍
Terra Mater makes great nature documentaries.
Thank you, and thanks for your insights! Any topic you would like to see next?

10:36 i think i recognize this scene. i don't remember what channel. was it Smithsonian channel?
The scene is taken from our 3-part series "Lions Rule" which we co-produced with National Geographic. So, could be, that you've seen it there. Or right here, in our video about how lions challenged a giraffe: czcams.com/video/sIg2fpUQtiI/video.htmlsi=n5AdxO14FIV4Omgr
Hi Jans! Probably National Geographic 😊
Is this the same guy who filmed or had anything to do with nat geo wilds lion kingdom? It had 3 episodes blood rivals, hunters of giants and pride and punishment??
Hi Kelly! Exactly!
Very interesting but very sort video. It strange photographer is able to stay very close lion pride and lion not attacking humans. I have seen this in india when lion only attack livestock but not human in jungle of GIR or girnar.
Think lion behavioral change was brought on by humans interacting in their habitat such photograher and safari visitors. These are tamed lions. Wonder what these lion were like in years before 1700 or 1800 when very few humans were around them.
Hi mars! He really stayed there for 10 years, so it was a long process until the lions got used to him :)
The classic 101 I’m one with nature an I’m special lesson 101 of nature either you’re predator or prey no they don’t like you ❌💀
this genes of lions are small
THE GIRAFFE STOMPED THE LIONS LIKE TOYS. IT'S EDITED OUT HERE.😂😂2= LIONS GANG' HUNT AND OFTEN FAIL. THE BEST HUNTERS IN AFRICA ARE LEOPARDS!LIONS TEND TO BE VERY OVERRATED.
Lions have a very low successful rate when it comes to hunting, it's lower than 30%
@@terramater It's at 5 percent Collectively! As a large pride of 34 often all come up empty. Lions have massive streams of prey running by. And still can't hunt at an elite rate. Leopard is way better
Leopards successful hunters, Lions successful eaters. Most food hunted by Leopards are eaten by other predators like Hyenas and Lions while Lions's food is rarely snatched from them unless they are full and abandon the carcass.
I felt that this was more about the people than the lions...
Did not really enjoyed.
But thanks.
What was the goal for this video to talk about himself and to playing the star or to film the lions sometimes i dont was sure
