Spring is Here lyrics by Lorenz Hart: .
"Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?
Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear".
When I listen to Bill Evans, I feel like the wind is blowing through my soul. I feel free

When you write to me, I always try to send a response, give me time, but I value all your comments, my friends.
And we value your videos and effort!!! You are amazing 👏 ❤
This was amazing thank you so much!!!
The difference in Bill's interpretation and mine is that he lived it....and I'm interpreting my impressions of what his genius played.
THANKS FOR EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF RECORDING YOU DO.
THANKS FOR THE HISTORICAL DATA, FOR YOUR HUMOR, FOR YOUR CHARSCTERS.
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!💜💜💜💜
WHAT HE SAID!! KH you are always very helpful and real about the process. We appreciate that.
KH always delivers.
Great comments from you all...makes me very happy! You are my brothers. I don't know what I would do without you. Humble thanks!
Kent, you’re truly an amazing teacher. A gift to jazz and the piano as a sublime instrument-gateway to the soul.
I’ve probably watched this video 5 times (and so many others as well)…I’m thinking of the diminished ‘Cosmic’ from a bit back if I remember correctly. Solar too. And so many others. Your time and gifts are so appreciated.
Your fellow compatriot from afar. If you have the Chance or interest, check out a book ‘The Paper Canoe’ from a theatre guru genius guy called Eugenio Barber. He talks in the intro of an art without borders, a ‘Land-Less country… and country which consists of Time not Territory.’ Anyways.
I’m glad I finally mustered the strength and courage to send this note here to you and the Jazz ranch. Proudly, I’ve turned many others and fellow students of my own onto your talents and teachings .
Regards,
Conor
I have always been mesmerized by listening to Bill Evans brilliantly play the piano. One can almost feel his emotions through his playing. Your breakdown and analysis of Bill Evans' version of "Spring is Here" is so well thought out and well done, as is your playing of it.
I have now watched your video twice through so far and learning and practicing. Much thanks Mr. Hewitt, for taking the time to prepare for and present this well done excellent video. It is greatly appreciated! I look forward to your next in the series on this.
Thank you so much, Azure. Your words of encouragement mean a lot to me, because it is only through that, that I know what I'm trying to accomplish has any value to others.
Appreciated your "guided tour" though the enchanted forest. Hearing a lot more now, and playing a lot more soon.
I dig you, man...the enchanted forest...is where where I want to be!
I feel like I'm listening to Bill Evans. Thank you very much for all that you give to us.
He was my most major influence...but I also did a tribute to Ahmad Jamal whose playing is very different.
The sound you pull off from your piano is unique and unusual.
Thanks so much, we love the Mason and Hamlin.
Thank you very much Kent! You are awsome! You share all that great music with you great passion and with such a wonderful communicativ anthousiasme and humour! And you are also a wonderful pianiste, musician! Bill Evans would have loved you too!
Wonderful comment...so helpful to me...God bless!

Bill and Kent-two of my favorite pianists
That's wonderful. Thanks!
A great decomposition is what we needed and we got it. Even though it seems black and white the alt dom will always seems to add true color. Thank you for taking the time to paint us another great image. Gratefully.
Great comment...thank you!
yes, sublime thank you
Kent your Bill Evans videos are the best man. I hope you never stop making videos on him!
Thanks so much for the encouragement...it keeps me going!
Apart from being funny and of course very dashing in the mask, you are immensely generous to share this level of stuff; after all these years I can play most of what I hear but Bill Evans ... it's like Debussy, beautiful but you're in space; you save me many hours of searching and all explained without pretention. My total respects and stay well.
That's a wonderful comment, John. Yes, Bill was influenced by Debussy, and he debated early on whether he should pursue a classical or jazz career. Lucky for all of us, he chose jazz.
Excellent! I'm learning so much from this. Thanks Kent
Glad to hear it!
Of the many fascinating things about Bill, when watching him play I get entranced by the obvious technique and natural flow of his hands. His sound was calculated in every subtle way, yet so very free. His mindset about music is deeply philosophical. As always, interesting video Kent!
You said it just right, Isaiah, everything about his playing is perfection, but his sense of dynamics is what makes me feel his emotions and essence the most. But you are right about the fact that there is a very natural flow of his hands and his mind set is deeply philosophical. There's no way i can explain that about him, I can explain it about me, but I don't have that kind of insight into a genius's mind. I wish I did.
The level of harmonic understanding and inner hearing that it takes to come up with such an abstract, yet hauntingly beautiful arrangement is just absolutely mindblowing. Thanks for making these concepts more accessible! Loving these in depth masterclasses!
Yes, that is what great artists and geniuses do, in every walks of life...art , or science, or math ...it always amazes me the scope of people's capabilities...how did they conceive of a light bulb or a TV?
Music, to me, is still the highest of art.
Thank you very much for sharing this Kent
You are very welcome
I've been at it for over 50 years - I thought I knew - but this is rocket science ! Thank you Kent
Thanks, Bernie. It's so consoling to me, that you recognize that this is 'inside" information , only available to an elite class of people.... ready for it.

23:00 all these great chords remind me of the brilliant Bernard Herrmann score to Psycho, also 1960! Great video, so inspiring. “Psyched” there’s a transcription. Thanks, Kent.
That was an amazing score ..as was Bill Evans interpretation of this wonderful song.
Thanks so much Kent! Your videos really inspire me and keep me practicing! Bill Evans is my greatest idol and I love his music! Greetings from Austria

Thank you once again Kent. Can't wait to get stuck into this one.
Have fun
You've shed so much light on the beautifully mysterious playing and style Bill Evans Kent and not in a way that will unmask an art form with underlying false pretenses but one that reveals the absolute brilliance of it. I endeavor to be a better player and will pour over this and your other videos and at some point buy a hard copy of your book when money permits. Thank you for your genius as a player and teacher Kent.
Beautifully stated, my friend, Thomas. You are helping me to be affirmed and encouraged to continue what I'm doing, and I'm eternally grateful. Bless you, brother!
Thank you, Kent!!
Thank you!
Exellent!!
As if it seems bill's alternate take!!
Kent you are the man. Thank you so much. Please do a September in the Rain tutorial!
My first jazz piano teacher told me to get a bill evans album so i went to the store and grabbed a bill evans tape. Turned out to be the sax player....oops. Now the Bill Evans pianist has been my favorite musician for 20+ years. Haha.
I first heard him live at the Village Vanguard in 1964. My quartet opened for him in Hartford the summer before he died. Thanks for the comment and request.
That was outstanding Kent!. Thanks for going into such detail and also for sharing what you learned about that tricky passage. It is indeed a very beautiful song. I didn't know until just recently that Bill Evans was buried in Louisiana. I would have never guessed that. Best to you and yours. Jack
Thank you! Wonderful
Thank you!
He grew up in Jersey. I know he graduated from S. Louisianan University. Maybe that's why.
Kent Hewitt I didn’t know that either, but I bet that you are right and it does have something to do with it. Regarding Jersey, I always assumed that he was from NY or NJ. Thanks for the additional info, Kent. I need to learn more about him.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Im not a jazzer at all and you made perfect sense! Those dim maj7ths are hip!!!
Thanks for the comment!
Beautiful 👏👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Portrait in Jazz may be becoming my favorite Bill Evans album! Waltz for Debbie holds a special place for me though. thanks for everything Kent been watching your videos nonstop and learning so much!
Portrait is my favorite Bill Evans record, but all the recordings he made with Scott La Faro are wonderful.
Thank you, as always. I enjoyed the breakdown, because when I listen to guys like Evans, I never know what they're doing or where they're coming from. The lesson was over my head but there is always a little nugget in there that I can take with me. Thanks.
Well said! Please go to playlists and watch my 9 Bill Evans tutorials!

Another spectacular Bill Evans video...he is one musician I can't get enough of...what a beautiful
I absolutely agree, Phyllis, and to me this is his greatest track!
I need to rewatch this and the other Bill Evans video you did last month because it's so deep and there's so much to try to understand and absorb. But, even just from the initial viewings I feel like I've learned so much about my favorite jazz pianist. Thanks a lot for doing these, Kent. I would love to see you do more videos on Bill Evans.
And you did a great job playing both pieces.

I appreciate the comment, and I also learn from this process and from you. Thanks for subscribing!
Fascinating information - thanks very much,
Glad it was helpful!
Whenever I listen to Bill Evans I always get a sense of his sadness, his pain. I think all great works seem to come from this place. Thanks for this lesson on his special chords!
That's correct. But also, I believe he conveys a sublime passion for positive and good things in life. He touches the deepest parts of our souls.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Yes, you're right, I neglected to mention that. Isn't it funny how pain sounds so beautiful when you put it to music!
Wow thank you!
You're welcome!
Sir, we appreciate your contributions to music. ✌🏽👏🏽🙏🏽

I'm touched that you wrote to me...you have so much potential.
This is awesome Kent.
Thank you!
This is one grate lesson. Bill Evans is one of my favorite piano players, and you Kent are Bill Evans of piano education!
Thank you.
That's a wonderful compliment. I can't imagine a world without Bill Evans, and I was gifted to first hear him live when I was 19 years old.
Great explanation and motivation, Kent!
Thanks for telling me!
thank you for this. bill evans is my favorite pianist
I can't imagine a world without Bill Evans.
Kent!!! Wow!!!
I couldn't agree with you more about the genius of Evan's harmonic sense. This is such a masterpiece of expression of the unrequited love the song is intended to express. The tensions and unexpected releases.

The power of spring's attractions: blossoms and scents, freshly formed beauty and radiant colors allures with the haunting of siren melodic calls that demands desires be fulfilled. Yet amongst the many diverse allures one may find that apparent devices of fertile love was not a guarantee of a perfect match.
Some only find a lonely walk through a promising paradise. Some only taste the salt of their own tears.

Wow...I am truly honored. I left a message on Messenger through FB.
You're funny, Kent. I wish they would bring back the "piano bars". I miss them .. Great song .. Thank you for sharing a wonderful performance by you !! Have a great weekend ..
Thanks for listening. I used to play at piano bars and it was fun, at the time.
Awesome tutorial! Thanks, Kent! Yes, I am a Bill Evans fan, though I don’t often understand the theory behind what he is playing. Your explanation has removed some of that mystery. More please! Working from home full time, I’ve had more opportunity to practice, and I’m currently putting in 1-2 hours each day. You’ve given me some chord progression ideas to play around with. I’ve been wanting to compose and arrange again, maybe I’ll create something from these ideas. :)
that's so cool, Tim. Please check out my playlists for subjects that interest you. Click on View full playlist to see a list of videos in that category. i have 9 videos on Bill Evans now.
Very interesting very deep I’m gonna see if I can apply it
Correct..very deep.....goes to show that if you have the desire, and work at it, you can learn anything. Thanks!
Thank you for your videos! They are the most helpful on CZcams 👏🙏
Glad you think so!
Very nice !!! Its above my grade level but I love it. Love to hear the technical music and the advance chording which some probably call avant garde. Thanks for sharing and spending the extra time practicing it. Welcome back Alternate Man ! I agree with you, the pandemic can be depressing, so..."Hang Loose !!"
Thank you very much! Swing loose , brother...nice comment!
I go back and forth between Portrait in Jazz and How My Heart Sings! for my favorite Bill Evans LP. Thanks for your posts, and thanks for the commentary by Mr. Ego! Here's one hep cat that digs your jazz tips!
Yes, I have most of Bill's albums and both you named are great albums, but to me there was no comparison to when Bill played with Scott LaFaro.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thanks for the guidance. I just picked up a couple of live albums with Bill and Scott, Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby.
This is SUPER useful! Really getting into Bill Evans and gems like these help my understanding progress so much more quickly.
Thanks again for everything you do! Hoping to see more vids breaking down interesting chords/ideas 😎
I will do more and thanks for the affirmation!
Wonderful unfolding, Kent. Especially love your scaler/chordal movements, and the two forms using the M7.
I would never have used it if I hadn't been so intrigued with desire to learn it from Bill.
Thank you so much! I'm learning so much from your content!
I'm so glad!
BRAVO! THAT was a mountain to climb, I'll bet. We thank you!
Yes it was!
