His songs are like mini novels... how he managed to tell a story in about 5mn, especially something we relate to each time... a genius...
A great musical storyteller.
OMG it's a good observation!
City-Life Trains you Well...
I agree 100% Same intimacy and honest descriptions as in great novels
I love this comment!
Believe it or not, when this song came out in the seventies, I was a teenager living on a farm in the south of Germany. My knowledge of the English language was good enough to understand the lyrics. After the suicide of my father my mother was overprotective and tried to impose her ideas on me about faith and any other aspect of life. At the time I was not able to distance myself from her - and this song clearly expressed my feelings. It kept me going to free myself from the fetters and chains. It has really changed my life.
You’re telling my story. Mother in my case, authoritarian silent generation German father. Rigidity does not appeal to me even now! Dad was angry when I was sulking on a drive, and this came on, I Daringly p, turned up the radio. He was not pleased 😂 ❤
Good for you!
I am glad that you got away from the strong hold of your mom. These controlling mothers often frig up their childrens lives, especially their sons.

Lyrics:
Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.
I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone
I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind, but not on my time
They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you you can't sleep with somebody else
Ah, but sooner or later you sleep in your own space
Either way it's OK, you wake up with yourself
I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone
I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind, but not on my time
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone
Keep it to yourself it's my life.
Keep it to yourself it's my life.

I went to his (probably the last) concert at Tokyo yesterday. This song was the opening song, and soon after he started playing the prelude, the audience got pumped up! It was one of the greatest night in my life and their lives who were there. I’ll never forget the moment of the live forever.
That’s so awesome!
I went to his 100th concert in Madison Square Garden and I will never forget it!

Yes not Many of them . ELO doing it on the other side of the pond during the same era.
Something about Billy Joel music makes me feel better when I’m going through trouble times. Especially after breaking up with my girlfriend. I just lay on my bed, put my headphones on, and I just listen to him talking to me.
Im going through the same thing. We got this
Me too, going through a breakup right now and this helps so much!!
That’s what I’m doing right now, except I got turned down for a relationship.
I haven't heard this song in years and I dreamed about this song. And yes im going thru a break up.
Gentlemen this is also my breakup song currently. I was lucky. I got out of something horrible before I got married. Won’t be here again. “Speak your mind, but not on my time!!” I love Billy Joel!!!!
It’s October of 2022 and this Billy Joel song is still a banger! His music reminds me of my Mom when I was growing up in the 1980s. She would play his albums all day on Saturdays when she would clean the house. I remember dancing around the living room and singing. I love you Mom. Thank you for raising me on amazing music!

Billy is just iconic. He is an amazing talent. He's a living legend. What a spectacular musician
my favorite song from the late 70s.
What a brilliant songwriter Billy is!
Better than Elton John !! Because, Elton's words can not be easily understandable ! He chews when singing !! ( Example-- The song ).
It's honestly astonishing he wrote so many great songs and I'm still finding out songs I've heard on the radio like this one are by him.
I'm not sure many people realize just how many great songs he wrote and sang, I have all of his original albums, often when you listen to one artists album a few of the songs are good or great. On all of Billy Joel's albums, every song is memorable. He is a unique talent, I'm so glad he seems to have reached a stable period of life and seems happy at last.
I found out a song by him called get it right the first time this week

I’m rediscovering his music after many years. This song has been chasing me around for a while now. I absolutely love it.
Just found out yesterday that Peter Cetera from the band Chicago sings backup on this song! Just a cool little fact.
It's crazy how much of Billy Joel's music I know subconsciously just from my Dad playing when I was a kid.

Shut say uuhat else Richard no he uuill not
COOL, he's hilariously clever
Copied and pasted:
”Although Lewis certainly fits the bill for ‘My Life’, Joel revealed the true subject of the lyrics in the 2014 book Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography. “The song ‘My Life’ is based on Tony Lawrence, a guy I knew who had a job on the East Coast but decided to be a comic and move out West to live out his dream.”
The first time I heard this song was about 32 years ago, and now it sounds even better!
Maybe there is somebody here who feel the same... (I hope).
Greetings to everyone!
I guess you could say that you've known about Billy Joel for "The Longest Time" ;) Lol (Not sorry for my terrible joke)
Gidday Rafael. I am with you brother. I heard it when it first came out. I remember the effect of the video street opening in the tubes. It was a mind blowing attitude changer at the time; and of course the music. I think it sounds better too, perhaps because it has decades of memories plus is just great rock your bones music.
I hear ya Rafael! I was 12 when this song was released. Loved it then and even more today! It's always been my favorite tune from Billy Joel. Probably because of it's happy piano melody!

I love that he has Chicago as backup singers...
Billy Joel in the late 70’s/early 80’s was straight up making great after great song, definitely his prime.
His early-mid '70s stuff was phenomenal as well. I only tuned out after An Innocent Man.
I don't think he ever lost his touch. Nothing wrong with his late '80s/early '90s stuff. We Didn't Start the Fire was just as impactful as any other song of his I heard before that. Matter of Trust, I Go to Extremes and River of Dreams were memorable also.
Born in 1961. I've gone to many concerts in my life, Including Billy Joel. Not until recently did I actually listen to the words.
better late than never
I'm raised on hip hop. I HATED when my dad would put his music on, BUT, when he put on billy Joel, I would instantly be in a better mood today. Even today, I go from "hardcore" rap, trap, to billy Joel. Easily one of the greats, from the voice to the message that I e understood even as a child. I hope he lives the longest life because even though I've heard nothing new, if his e ergy is half as beautiful as his music the world would be missing a beautiful soul
My mom passed away in the hospital during covid we couldn't be with her I left music on for her as we left. This is the song she took her last breath to.

*doesn't :)
ok yes
Jorgegavamagli Actually, your use of didn't is acceptable,
if your intention is to refer to the "past" tense.
(however, adding a word like "just" gives it more impact)
"this guy didn't just make music... he WAS music"
And Billy sure did write some amazing songs!
Sam Cadura yes, but my point was that he is STILL making some of the best music around :)
NatashaDNP It's awesome that you're a Billy Joel fan! I am too. And YES he has written and recorded some of the best pop and rock music of ALL TIME. I wasn't negating your comment (or point)... just letting Jorge know his grammar was acceptable. But now that you mention it - - - Billy isn't really making new music any more? His last "actual" album (not counting live/concert recordings or that classical l.p. he released in 2001) was in 1993. "River of Dreams" was released 21 years ago. His last single "To Make You Feel My Love" from 1997 was written by Bob Dylan... which is unusual, since Billy typically only records songs that he's written. Anyway, no big deal, cause the real point we all seem to agree on, is that Billy Joel is AWESOME.

I love ❤️ this song 🎵 ❤️, it's really what you want to tell toxic people. Billy Joel made this song 🎵 so freaking relatable. This is an incredible Masterpiece 🎉🎉
This is your life, and no one else's!
This song helped me a lot when I was trying to detach from a toxic friend group. We had moved schools together (bigger new school) and, while they where bad in my last year of school, they had become so extremely spiteful towards the world (including me) that one day, at our lunch period, I looked around the table and saw a couple of spaced out introverts, a couple of complete robots, several tools who did nothing but pick on everybody else and an abundance of yes men who always sided with them out of their insecurity. So, I stopped showing up when they where doing stuff, and I finally realized how much they where holding me back.
“You can speak your mind, but not on my time” and “I don’t care what you say anymore this is my life” both helped tremendously, and I find myself humming this time whenever I think back on that group.
