  • The Denver Nuggets title defense season ended in heartbreak at the hands of their division rival. Nikola Jokic ran out of gas, Jamal Murray wore down against Anthony Edwards and the Wolves’ perimeter defense, and Michael Porter Jr. couldn’t hit a shot. So what are the takeaways from this season? The DNVR Nuggets podcast team answers that question and provides several perspectives on how we should remember the year.

      I've already suggested before the trade deadline and said if Denver wish a dynasty, so they need to bring Dani Avdija from the Washington Wizards to the Denver Nuggets!... Avdija is 23 years old 6.9" high IQ player, elite defender that can guard all positions 1 through 5, can play all positions 1 through 5 as well!... Already few teams like OKC, Grizzlies, Pelicans and so' are very interested to trade for him!... I hope Denver will try as well?

      Perhaps, but they win a championship… so can say it’s a total waste. Feel like there will be a lot of parallels to Aaron Rodgers career. And when it’s all said this may 100% be the case. Let’s hope not. Nuggets will bounce back but they gotta get at least another chip with a generational talent like Joker.

      @@23jrza I fear it's going to be like Dirk's career in Dallas. One magical year winning a championship and after that a perennial playoff team but not sniffing the Finals again. Not saying Jokic is on the same all-time level as Dirk...I actually think he's already eclipsed Dirk....but he's a similar low key foreign player with values and a personality that clashes with the standard star player mindset and I don't know if he'll be the squeaky wheel to get the Nuggets to change things up.

  • @rado22
    @rado22 Před 12 dny +22

    Jokic is very loyal to Denver but one thing that can push him away is these expectations from Denver media and organization that he should carry a sub par team that relies on average rookies to the title. All Denver opponents in the West have brought in multiple All-Stars or multiple top draft picks (OKC) to compete with Denver. Let's be real, KCP is not a Top 50 NBA player, Murray is inconsistent and Gordon and MPJ aren't All-Star caliber, Christian Braun and Payton Watson are below average draft picks, single digit contributors at best. Jokic is carrying too much load and this could push him away and Denver would go back to being irrelevant as they were before him.

    D-Line, come on about Murray. Adam and Harrison is 100% right. You can't excuse Murray's decent performance in ONE GAME and ONE HALF for the atrocious playoffs he had. The reason why the team was taxed and tired was likely b/c of Murray's 23 games off and how bad his shooting was throughout the whole playoffs. And D-Line, Anthony Edwards didn't score well in Game 7, but Edwards controlled his game and controlled his impact in Game 7 better (defense wise, passing the ball, ball handling, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, only 1 TOV, etc.) than Murray did in nearly all of Murray's playoff games this year.

Their philosophy needs to change, as everyone can see. They need to develop their young talent faster and play them much more. And they need another top notch point guard to run a second unit. Booth's "Project Dynasty" has to end. You got Christian and Payton (Strawther maybe) that you can keep and develop on the rookie deals. Pickett and Tyson, are total busts (I know that Malone doesn't play rookies a lot, but Christian and Payton got good minutes, and Strawther would probably have gotten more if he didn't have injury issues. So Malone will play rookies if they are ready to play) For years they have been forcing Zeke to play center, even though he is obviously a power forward. Yes, Malone did play starters too much, but there are not that many guys on the bench that he can trust on the court. Nuggets front office has to wake up and realize that this is not going as well as planned.
    They can keep 2 to 3 young guys, and everyone else on the bench should be let go or traded along with the picks. Also, they can get some decent players in free agency who will sing for less so they can try to win a championship. I am not saying they will find players like Bruce Brown every season, but they can definitely get better players than Justin Holiday. They did not even try to find players in free agency, because Booth was so focused on the draft. He was selling future first-round pick for more second-round picks while finals were going on. Booth has to retool this bench and find a way to keep KCP.
    After this season, MPJ has to be on the trading block. It is going to be hard to trade him because he has a huge contract for the next 3 years, and every team is going to be scared to get a player with his back problems. We probably would not be able to trade him this off-season, but if he does not have a decent leap next season, then the Nuggets will have to trade him next off-season hoping he is healthy. The way he is playing now he doesn't deserve 35-40 million dollars a year. You can get a role player for a 23-26 million dollar year, that will have the same impact, but it will open more money for the bench.
    We can't waste Jokice's prime years, and rely on him to carry us so much, he is turning 30 next season. We need a decent backup center and point guard.
    If they continue with "Project Dynasty", we would be lucky to reach the finals again, because the West is only going to get better.

Kcp can go tbh, he is inconsistent, and cb is such a better defender than him, I honestly get scared when we sub Kcp back in 4 cb. We need someone like Andre Drummond, who can rebound, protect the paint, and defend, he’s a perfect backup center within our price range. I’m 99% sure we are trading zeke away thank god 🙏🏽 we need someone like Bruce, and that’s honestly all we need Mpj needs to get his shit together, but I’m not worried about him

      All very valid points. As bad as MPJ was in the Wolves series, we have to keep him at least for another season. Yes, MPJ did played bad but overall he did have a pretty good season along with great performances in the 1st round. The truth was he just had terrible matchup in the Wolves series. Getting guarded by guys with length like Jaden McDaniels did really rattled him. The point guard depth situation is interesting. I don't think Reggie is good enough as the backup PG on the team so. My read is Jalen Pickett is Calvin's guy, but Collin Gillespie is Malone's guy. Unfortunately, I don't think both of them are great enough to be backup PG on the team especially in the playoffs. Perhaps, it's possible to develop Christian Braun into more of a combo guard (PG/SG) as opposed to SG/SF. Let Braun handle the ball and make more decision. This also opens up his confidence as a guy who can score. Julian then can play SG while Watson can play legit SF. Watson should never have to play PF, but he does needs to get stronger. The reason why Bruce also fit so well on the Nuggets was because he is the ultimate Swiss army knife. Dude can play PG, SG, or SF and just plug in whatever position Nuggets needed him to play.

    Obviously Murray is a different type of point guard than Mike Conley and they are asked to do totally different things, but when Ant missed that wide open 3 on the left side of the court then Murray shoots a transition 3 and bricks it, it seemed like Murray was trying to 1v1 Ant in a indirect way rather than manage the game. Mike Conley picks Murray’s pocket in the 4th then rather than pull up a 3, he passes it to Naz who then makes the right pass to Ant for the corner 3 (where the wolves couldn’t miss in the second half). Murray was elite last playoffs, but this series he didn’t look like a point guard when the nuggets needed it. Not enough play making and too many costly turnovers. Maybe a backup big helps the bench, but Murray has to get the ball moving and also, CB has to be able to beat miss matches and take and make 3s when they are giving him space.

    • @TaiTeachify
      @TaiTeachify Před 13 dny

      @@B.Davis1 and @markkraft6719 Sorry @B.Davis1, I like Murray, but Murray had an awful playoffs overall, regardless of his injury status. Look at his shooting percentages. Shot 50% or over once, and barely. And one of those games, Murray only shot 7-14 because he hit 3 consecutive shots when MN Defense gave up after losing to the Nugs by 16 points with 2 minutes to go in Game 5. In that game, Murray went from 4-11 to 7-14 in garbage time only after Jokic had his historic team-carrying Game 5 for the first 46 minutes. Plus look at the 3-18, 4-18 games and general games when Murray shot only 20-45%.
      Murray was bad in the 3-4 Lakers games BEFORE he got injured and Jokic had to carry them. Then Murray apparently was injured in Game 6 with the elbow (their second-to-last game, so you can't blame his entire playoffs on the elbow), but he CHOSE to keep shooting too much to go 4-18. Yet ever since Game 5 vs. the Lakers, Murray was generally moving fine with the calf, especially in Games 3-7 (so again, kind of an excuse). And I do sympathize a little: if the calf did mess with his lift and shooting rhythm a little, okay, i get it. But don't keep shooting SO MUCH and SO POORLY and try to impact the game with rebounds or assists. He is, after all, a point guard. Just don't unintentionally sabotage the game by being such a negative during your minutes and try to let Joker put the team over the finish line.
      No excuses for Murray, sorry. I like him and when he is good, he is great. But he really gets the biggest pass/excuses by Nuggets fans and national media for his inconsistent play. And in this overall playoffs, he was actually consistent... just consistently bad. Joker and his peak window deserves a more consistent #2. That said, I think the Nugs will stick with Murray. He just has to be less injury-prone and work on his consistency.

    I think it is long past time to have this conversation about Murray and I side pretty strongly with Adam here. I’ve been more skeptical of him than most given how often I see fans and analysts come to his defense but his performances last season in the playoffs bought him a lot of equity.
    I love Dline’s perspective on a lot of things but I think he’s seeing Murray through the rose coloured glasses I see so often done with him. Murray showed up in game seven, it was great to see it but overall, how many quarters did he show up for throughout the entire playoffs? What was the possibility the wolves series even needed to go to seven games had Murray been the consistent player the nuggets expect of their second option? How much does the team needing to carry his regularly injured self weigh them down over a long season into the playoffs?
    Can the role players even establish a serious rhythm and expectation of their roles when such an important player misses so much time. We saw it time and time again that the team was thrown out of rhythm from Murray’s constant entering and exiting the lineup. You have Jokic, a generational player who puts the team first in ever situation, plays as many games as he can and carries this massive load every season. Who on the team is ever able to help take some of that load off of him? For most other teams there’s always the second option that can carry the team through large stretches of the season.
    It is unsurprising to me that the team ran out of gas when they lack depth. When their dudes had to sprint through the finish line. When part B to the AB punch was still battling through injuries and kept running out of gas and could barely put up one-two strong performances. It seems pretty clear to me that if Murray doesn’t take his conditioning seriously coming into the start of next season we are just going to get this exact same result again next year. The pattern has revealed itself and it will be impossible for me to believe in the playoff Murray fantasy next year if he’s sitting a quarter of the season again.
    Jokic deserves somebody that can help carry him after everything he has given this team. The teams best hope is it’s Murray reflecting deeply on the negative patterns starting to occur season to season. Jokic and the nuggets deserve a Murray that is contending for an all star spot, and that starts with taking the off season with the requisite amount of seriousness.
    Time for Murray to grow up and stop acting like Shaq did during his career.

    something something joke about how they ran out of energy at the end when it’s the mile high city that makes other people suffer.
    the defence was just too much. when the wolves were allowed to play hard post season defence the nuggets were getting frustrated and couldn’t play their game. wolves don’t have a flamethrower offence they beat you by defence. they were cold in the first half, Ant was struggling but KAT held it down and it was the perfect storm heading into the locker room. nuggets over confidence and wolves getting to talk about what wasn’t working. once wolves starting hitting shots and cutting the lead, rest of team gave Denver nothing and Wolves smelt blood.
    i’m canadian and love all our guys, but lost a lot of respect for Jamal this series. funny that his old talking point was “he meditates and his dad made him do pushups in the snow” but the guy has no mental toughness. put some good frustrating defenders on him and he’ll freak out and crumble 5/7 times.

    Greetings to everyone from Serbia. MPJ played without urgency, it seemed so stoned. In all 7 games specially in game 7, it would be better if Brown played 30 minutes and Porter played 15. I think that by trading Zeke and Porter, he can bring two players plus increase the salary, as KCP would leave this summer. If u want to beat teams like Wolves you nid to have 2 players with 10-15 points, 2 players with 15-20, 2 players with 20-30 points,. Total of 6 players, and the possibility of one more player with 0-10 points. It is so transparent that Denver is failing in the third quarter - every ball as soon as it comes to -10 seconds immediately goes to Jokic, Murray 2 or 3 lost balls in Denver's half or in the very center of the field.

How can we expect Murray to be that guy in the playoffs when he misses so much games in the regular season. Building good habits is so important during the regular season coming into the playoffs. The only way to go over that is to spend a lot (which has diminishing returns and an upper limit anyways) or to underpay players compared to the wins they are worth. And the 2 ways to really do that outside the fringes is to have a max contract still underpay your superstar (that's WHY they are superstars and not just hype) or luck out and have multiple young stars on rookie contracts (which again has a ceiling and time limit).

      @@Neofilmcritic They're not 100% wrong though....how many multi-MVP players have been surrounded by the talent vacuum that Jokic has during his career? They don't do some sort of roster change and I fear he'll end up being like Dirk....a humble foreign guy who's too loyal to the team that drafted him, that got his team a championship and made the braintrust think they're the smartest guys in the room. Dirk's post-championship years were laughable with the "Robins" they tried to bring in and play with him. And that's not to mean I think Jokic should be thinking of heading for greener pastures.....he just needs to use some leverage behind the scenes and make it clear he wants some improvements made....will be better in the long run for the Nuggets and Jokic.

      @@Neofilmcritic Look its sad but true at list Spurs Maveriks or other serious organizations supported their star and give them the reason to stay and play for that teams .I wish Denver do the same for Jokic but year after year (now 3 of 4 years (excluding 2023)) they give this kid (Nikola) nothing to work with to get to the championship.
      The reality is Denver is and always bean player development organization not a championship organization like Lakers Mavs Spurs Celtics Bucks and on..
      And that's ok but i dont know that Jokic knows that and that is sad..:P

    God can we just stop saying “Wolves comeback from a 20pt lead”. It’s so cringe! 20 pt lead early in the third literally means nothing in todays NBA. Heck 20pt lead early in the 4th also means nothing! Today’s NBA is about runs and teams can easily go on a 15 to 5 run in a matter of minutes! Wolves didn’t comeback from anything and Nuggets didn’t lose a big lead. 20 point lead early in the third is not a big lead!

    • @timjoseph4085

      It’s fair to say though they were up 20 with like 10 minutes left in the third then proceeded to end the quarter only up 1. That’s pretty insane.

      I really feel like DJ could’ve contributed to this series. As well as P Wat. Throw those dudes out there with all that length and defense and just give the wolves a different look. Rattle them a little bit. Maybe let Joker get more then ONE minute of rest.

    Big problem with Denver is that all thinks that Nuggete was so close to win title. Guys even if you pass Minnesota, Nugets would lose against Dalas or Boston.
    Guys you have Jokic and no one else. Only 1 guy that needs to win 82 regular and 16 playoff games and Denver still do not get it that do not work. You are wasting Jok prime, and you do not have best starting 5 are you crazy. Minnesota won 1 game by 45, and few others 20 plus. On game 7 you lose 20 points lead, WHAT BEST 5 ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!! You need 3 more guys that will play offence, and defence, trade Murray and MPJ and make real team.... Look on other teams they are geting a lot from role players. Denver needs major rebuild.....

  • @donie-rg4cy
    @donie-rg4cy Před 12 dny

    I don't understand the narrative that Denver has the best starting five in the game. No all stars beside Jokic, no all defensive nba players, bunch of solid average players with a guy who carry them hard for years now. Find me another team where one player leads the team in every statistical category by a far margin. Points, rebounds, assists, steals and even blocks. I mean the guy who can't jump leads the team in blocks?!
    Murray was always excused because of those two good playoffs that he had but in reality he's just a solid player with pretty average production. Beside inconsistency and being injury prone, his biggest problem is that he thinks he's much better than he actually is. When he's on fire, it looks amazing but he continues to play the same way even when he's dead cold, Too many iso, too much ball handling, dribbles and too many tough shots for no reason, That cools off the squad and breaking their rhythm. And when I look at the other guards through the league, so many of them have several signature games during this playoffs...Brunson, Maxey, Edwards, Shay, Irving, Luka, Mitchel, Haliburton, White....Jamal didn't have a single game like that
    Porter is inconsistent too but at least he's accepting his role. The biggest problem with him is his overvalued contract. His contract is the biggest reason why Denver have such a short rooster this year
    Front office have to make some changes in offseason or Denver will not be relevant for a title shot. Imo only Joker and Gordon should be out of the market trade
