Gregg Allman interview - PART 1 of 14 - Dickey Betts - Saenger Theater New Orleans 1982

- Gregg talks about Dickey in this segment, in glowing terms. Sure would be nice if the original Allman Brother Band members could re-capture some of that incredibly rare energy that started this legendary band out and put their differences aside to jam together just one more time while it's still a possibility. Do it for Duane & Berry. I think they'd like that.
1st part of approximately 45 minutes of raw unedited, unreleased footage used for a 7 minute local New Orleans TV news spot - Hudba
The amateur interviewer allows Gregg to talk. He occasionally asks a dumb question, but Gregg feels comfortable enough to answer, breathes, and then adds another line or two to the story. The stories Gregg tells are wonderful insights into the writing process, musical influences, & history of the brothers. This is a 34 year old Gregg who is not yet guarded.
ann cooley Great comment
Bullshit, he's guarded just not as guarded
Such a gracious guy, Gregg. He may have been fucked up at times, okay, in his own admission, most of the time, but you can feel his sweet character in everything he says. He's just a good guy. He didn't exactly have a jumpin-up-an-down great childhood, you know. But look what he achieved.
The demons tried and tried to kill him but his wit, talent and grit just kept him going. Not too many like Gregory no more, people.
Yes he is beautiful a fine looking man
My God this man can speak freely from his heart...you can’t listen to someone today for 2 min. before they’re throwing the sh*t around! What a true southern gentleman he really really was.
what a kind soul. Gregg would be so nice to talk to. such a gentleman ❤
Amazing how clear and well spoken Gregg is here. Comes off as very intelligent and good natured.
A man of sense and intelengence...... and such a Soul.....love all y'all😘
Good guy, gracious and simply does not like to be negative about anyone, if possible. And regarding the songs he wrote when the ABB had Duane in it, they were genius, all time great songs. Today they sound as relevant as in 1971.
Just finished "MY CROSS TO BEAR".....WHAT a Great Read!!!!
This man is not stoned. He's just layed back. He's obviously the kind of guy who gives some thought to what he says and doesn't feel the need to rush. He's coherent and using full complete sentences and doesn't give a damn about inpressing anyone.
He was stoned as well.
He was accepted to medical school to become a surgeon. Dude had it goin on.
@@bradr1913 It's probably a safe assumption that he's a guy with above average intelligence but it's still an assumption.
He has said in interviews that he wanted to be a dentist... not a surgeon.
Your comment shows that you don't know what you're talking about. First of all, Gregg Allman didn't graduate college. I don't know if he even started college, which is not a knock on him because he may very well have gotten serious about his music before college, but the point is that you need to graduate college with a four year degree before you can enter med school. Second you don't become a surgeon until you have earned your medical degree so for him to have been accepted to a medical school to become a surgeon he would have to be a doctor first and Gregg Allman is no medical doctor.
I Hope some day everyone can experience The Allman Brothers, For lack of better words, these Guys are Genius....
Gregg was gorgeous back in the day!
I heard his music for years growing up, but never his speaking voice in an interview. I see now what made him so attractive. RIP.
Me either Donna. This was one of my favourite bands growing up, but I had never seen or heard him interviewed. What a pleasant surprise, he is a very deep and intelligent individual.
Very humble man and so positive about his previous band mates.
RIP Gregg. You will be missed.
Such a sweet soul ❤
listen how deep and resonate his speaking voice was in this interview. Quite a contrast to his speaking voice of later years...
My God he's beautiful!
hell yeah he is
Just saw Gregg in Texas last moonth. He was great! Now he is recuperating from a liver trasplant. Wishing him good health!
R.I.P. Gregg Allman, you Sexy thing !
omg wwhat a beautiful and gentleman man
Well spoken and thoughtful
Gregg's wearing a Pine Knob Music Theatre shirt from Clarkston, MI., one of my favorite concert going places in the 80s and 90s. Wish I could've seen them live.
Love this guy!
@jf99151 - no pills, just not awake yet. the interviewer had us come down around 10 am to do this segment which was very early for us
I hope Elijah will keep his dad's music alive in some of his concerts alive would be a great memorial in his honor❤❤❤
But even BB said the Green God had the "sweetest tone" of any English player he had ever heard. Man of the World is just sublime in my book.

It is a well known fact among people who were around during that period that Betts had a short fuse and had a history of abusing his wife and possibly another female. Once in the lobby or maybe backstage, Betts was doing his thing and pushing, shoving his wife around and Warren Haynes basically said " Hey why don't you try pushing me around "? A few blows were exchanged and Betts didn't want any part of Haynes for obvious reasons. No it wasn't just one time with Betts, he had a pattern. That was one of the reasons Gregg let him go.. Say what you will about Gregg Allman, but he has always had a reputation as a gentleman where women are concerned.Same with Warren Haynes.
Julia S Without Dickey its not The Allman Brothers Band.
+wavygr
Yeah, we've all heard this story. Some people still hate Allman for his testimony, but Scooter told him to cooperate with the Feds because they already had the goods on him ( Scooter Herring ) so what good would it do for Allman to do time too ? Either way it's history and what was, was. I'm sure we weren't privy to all the details. Some people act as if Gregg was the only band member that Scooter supplied with drugs, but not so.
how go you know this?
I know Gregg had a drug problem, I've been criticized for pretty much worshipping Gregg. I don't care! He's the greatest blues man of MY generation!
Betts treated guys in his band like shit I guess
Take it up with Gregg Allman dude. I think HE knows much more about it than either one of us.Read Gregg's book.Unless that sounds like too much "work" to you? Whatever..Take Care.
so called rock was started in the south
Southern rock is like saying Rock Rock
I know this is a very old interview but damn he was such a hottie♥️♥️♥️
I used to go to concerts with 20.00 which bought a center stage front seat and t-shirt.
Gotta chuckle over the nostalgic comment, "You play these large ballparks and tickets are $6 to $12. People don't have the kind of money." Try 10 to 20 times that for a ticket nowadays.
So true. 😊
That road manager was my father, Scooter Herring, and Yes. He did testify against him. And, there is no truth to the rumors that they reconciled before my dad's death. He never heard from Gregg again.
Kellye B And yes, I was Scooter’s roadie, and there is no truth to the rumors (and even the rumours) that he and I ever reconciled before my death.
Blah blah
True gentleman.
I sure wish more kind, gentle souls like Greg made up the pop. down south today,he is what southern gentlemen are all about, not the haters who may put Trump in the oval office in 2024,RIP Greg wish there were many more like you.
and I quote '' some of them southern rock bands have Yankee's in them , I want ya to know''' that's is the greatest '' I love that''
Too fxx cool
ABB--the only band anymore I never miss when they come to town
boy i'd kill for a 12-20 dollar ticket for 6 bands!
Dude, they did get back together. The entire 90's pretty much. Glad I seen em several times. Now's just not the same without Dickey.
Nicholas, sweety, love your comment about Gregg !!! Wounderfully worded. Wit, Talent & Grit , no not 2 many like Gregory , thats an understatment. :-)
ok nobody gonna see this anymore..... but this brother is FUUUUCKED UP!!!!
thanks for the u9pload
*_"those tickets gonna cost you $12 -$20 and people just don't have that kind of money now days..."_*
When was this video made? Must have been quite awhile ago, with tickets prices at "$12 to $20.00" People would love to pay that much now!
It was '82 I think. I used to gripe having to pay $20, but I would come back with all kinds of stuff, plus, see a great band!!! I'll die happy knowing I saw Gregg when now,nit would cost $300 to get a nosebleed seat.
Back then, the minimum wage was
$2.45 an hour
In today's $ this would equal out to $55 to $75 to see a show. This was in 1982.
If the person who posted this is around, I'd like to ask whether you recall whether you posted these in chronological order--meaning is Part 1 the actual start of the interview, or did you pull this part out because you were interested in it and called it Part 1? I asked because I am going to piece this back together again and repost, but it seems it may be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, with pieces shuffled around, so it's not in strictly chronological order? There are nearly 2600 frames when it's put together---so I'm just wondering whether I'm going to need to be editing on a frame-by-frame basis. Thanks for your response :)
@faroutlindsey thank you
I saw Marshall Tucker, Jimmy Buffett and the Richie Furay Band in 1975 for $5. Granted they weren't the best seats in the house but I was there and it sounded okay.
👍
Clapton is awesome but i'd take Peter Green over anybody thats played blues from Britain.Early Fleetwood Mac was fantastic.
@rocknrolla81 Ya I got a chuckle out of that one.
Very sad..RIP
Does anyone have the link for the foot shootin' story on A&E's Graham Nash program?
$12 to $20 a ticket? I'd be glad to pay that money to see them now!
When Gregory is talking about Dickey's then-current new material in this 1982 interview, he is referring to stuff like "Nancy", which was demoed in 1981.. this demo was released in their box set in 1989: czcams.com/video/OhntU2h03Xk/video.html
I got to see the original band for 14 bucks in 1970 at the 2nd atlanta pop festival!so many others plus jimi hendrix!!Wonder what all that would cost now!!
@bb6345789 That is a ridiculous time to make a band do an interview! Especially with the night after night one offs and travel. He shines with that "stage" personality, cuz he has to. Most great musicians are just laid back and quiet when they don't have to be "that" version of themselves. Love ABB and love every side project each of them did!
Love Gregg, cooler than the other side o the pillow ~ & what a monster talent. Betts? ANYBODY that beats his woman is a nasty-ass outa control dirt-bag. I don't care what he does or who he works for. ] -)
One cool cat!
Love that he mentioned so many famous musicians that influenced him, the majority came from Mississippi.... just saying!
Me too. I am Scooter Herring's daughter. There was a lot of bs in the book, but it made for an interesting read. Listening to my father was far more interesting though. I loved hearing his stories about those days.
Kellye B I am just now reading about the early days. May I ask is your dad still around?
No one cares
Just finished Gregg's autobio and according to him, Betts became worse (controlling) ran off and even fired some band members without consulting Gregg who was totally fucked up on drugs at the time (as was Betts) Gregg didn't have the same "I ain't gonna take no shit" attitude that Duane had.Basically, Gregg is laid back and Betts took advantage.Plus, Betts' guitar playing actually started to suck live and he didn't care. THAT is what Gregg was too much of a gentleman to say in this interview.
1982 and he mentions that the piracy situation is out of hand? Hah, I wonder how he feels now!
where you in the band?
Times have changed, haven't they?
5:58 "Tickets 12-20 bucks people dont have that kind of money nowadaze" Ha! Look at the prices nowadaze 2010! 12-20 bucks sounds damn good to me!
You could make a convincing argument, that's for sure. Clapton wins for me only because of his volume of work, technique, sidemen, and philanthropic work. Also, he of anyone could have an attitude and he is very down to earth.
Betts guitar never "sucked". They just wanted to do their own thing.
@hazor777 - 1982
Musicians shouldn't have to explain why they do what they do to journalists anytime...ask questions about the music, not how they choose to do it, or who they want to play with...that's an artistic choice and a musicians right.
THESE GUYS LIVE WAY THE FUCK OUT THERE '' SO FOR PEOPLE TO THINK THEIR GONNA ACT'' NORMAL'', CMON? FUCK ITS MAKES U CRAZY JUST GOING THRU ALL THE CRAZY SHIT YOU JUST SEE'
Bryan McCarthy
living way out there is pretty much right. I was a full time picker for 20 years, never big-time but no day job either which was the best time I ever had. Could always sleep off a hang over and could slob my way thru whatever town I wanted to. But, it was still a lot of hard work, exhausting and the rug was pulled out in front of you a lot.
Yeah, I was out there, but it sure beat the 9 to 5. I have been out of it for 20 years. Shame there is not a huge live scene anymore. Sure was fun to get paid to blast thru Marshalls and flip off the establishment.
i dont think hes high at all
Wonder if he was on smack or quaaludes. Either way, I honor him, he is a brilliant writer and performer.
what the fuck would that have to do with anything what he was doing '' wtf'' are you kidding me'', they made some of the greatest jamms ever , on or off of drugs , so what does your half ass comment do for anyone but be negative and obviously brainwash more people with your negative dumbass shit like the younger kids are today against music and all the great things white people have done , its sickening how people have been turned against their own and do not stand behind the good they did because everybody wants to find fault instead of positive wtff' what have you done in comparison to these guys acheivements? yeah its what I thought '' fucking loser.
John n call the ambulance that man just got burnt!
I played this for my dudes in jax , florida 3 days ago when I got here , and their native southern boys that rock'' , and theie always talking that yankee boy shit'' right'' so '' , I played this for them'' OMG'' if there would of been a rock laying around '' they would of been under it'' ha ha'' oh the shame, shame'' ,
The words always slurred their way from Gregg's lips, even when he was sober. He's far too cogent in this interview to have been under the influence of anything beyond the beer he kept taking sips from.
In this video he seems totally sober. I believe he's even drinking a can of 7-Up, perhaps in part to make sure that was caught on TV, given, at the time his reputation for being a wild man with the substances. He does wipe his nose at one point, and the AAB tended to be rather fond of the nose candy, so there may have been some of that lying around at the time, but you would know if someone were Quaaludes or heroin, and he's clearly not on either here.
pills are very apparent here. I'm glad he's done with that.
Didn't he testify against his road manager or somthin when he got busted in '73 ??
"There is no such thing as british blues....lets make this clear...." .haha yep
@Django5198 YEP I Worked my ass off that summer working for my dad in construction to get the 14 bucks and more for other things I might want..like drugs...man they were every where! The concert was declared free the first night it started!I watched as the freaks climbed on the fence and rock back and forth till it fell over...14 bucks I coulda saved
I loved Gregg Allman, but he looks LOADED during this interview!!!
just tired, it was early in the morning
Dumb ass comments like this from people who know nothing is why the world sucks. You don't have a clue. STFU
Linda Sky Purple - I disagree, I've seen interviews with Gregg, where he appeared under "the influence", but this isn't one of them. He seems fine here.
Best white blues singer (male) ever. Janis very close.
Time warp ... people can't afford $12-$20 for a ticket. I paid $280 for 2 seats to see Sting @ UNO arena in New Orleans just a couple years ago.
Ka13Bang ...try the $2400 I put out for 3 of the best Stones tickets I can get for Miami area on 8/31/19.....$20 is soundin’ reallllll good...:)
Greg was not the pills but bozze
Baby daughter....can you let some out?
Anywhere from $12 to $20. People just don't have that kind of money these days.
Hate the label Southern Rock. Rock n Roll was born in the south. It's like saying Rock Rock.
Lot's of people say is such a bullshit way out not asking a direct question.
Gotta agree-doesn't seem so much under the influence to me.
hahaha I like some of that Brit stuff but let me tell ya,,,,the one that really didnt get into sleazy, typical rock n roll shit,,,,didnt get into the flashy glamor of it....was Rory Gallagher. My man. But,,,BUT...he was irish so,,,,he wasnt a Brit. Thank gawd. Hee hee. I just heasrd so much clapton all my life and i got SICK of it. Winwood,,,amazing. But,,,,its ours. Its not POP for fks sake haha! Thanks dear and peace to you "Jen" x
THANK YOU!! HE IS MESSED UP AIN'T HE?HA! HE FORGOT TO ADD JAZZ TO AMERICAN MUSIC..
