@@FiveLiver I own a Multitude of books in my house. A number of them are Qurans, Hadiths, other Religious stuff, A have a lot of books by Tolkien and JK. Rowling. and a couple of other fictions works. A few comic books, a few history books that I read daily, and a couple of Zoology and Biology. There is nothing stopping me from burning these books, but I won't. Because my religion does not ask me to.

Hands down, one of the best history channels out there. This is a truly great unbiased account of the Abassid golden age. No sugar coating, no bullshit undue flattery of one religion or another, just straight up history of a great dynasty.
most history channels, especially western, ignore the history of Arab empires despite the fact it is probably the most influential in our times. Respect for you for shedding light on this part of history, our collective history as humans.

It is said the books of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad were so numerous, the Mongols used them to construct makeshift bridges for their army to cross.
Apparently this is the origin of the saying "the rivers turned black for days due to the ink used".
As a recent convert to Islam it’s both very humbling and very disheartening to see this chapter in my faith’s history. Seeing the mighty empire, forged on military might and the deep seated faith that was felt in the hearts of so many people, becoming so powerful and culturally significant. And seeing the same empire fall due to its falling into sin, the same sin which can bring down a person can bring down a mighty empire. Allah’s love guides us to peaks unlike any other, but also to lows unlike any other in history when it is ignored or spurned. Our culture, history, and faith as Muslims have seen some of the proudest and most crippling moments in history. And the Abbasid caliphate is a perfect showcase of that, and how even the mighty can be weakened and fall due to its sin.
Inspired by Sheikh Ahmed Deedat greed seeped into the hearts of the army, and weakness seeped into the hearts of the sultans. Allah gave them greatness and took it away whenever they began to move from him.
Your documentaries are an excellent resource. I recommend them to my students on a regular basis. Well researched and narrated in an engaging manner. Please continue.
This was during the time trade between The Middle East, and East Africa increased. An interaction that led to a lot of East African groups becoming Muslim.
The Sultanate of Mogadishu was thriving during this time. Muslims all over the globe were thriving this time.

I last week visited the Bait Al-Hikma, the actual building was unfortunately closed but the newer building next to it is still a translation center, capturing many translators, poets, writers, etc.
Baghdad is a very ancient city with precious heritage, unfortunately put in corrupt hands causing great neglect to many of its historical sites.
The house of wisdom was reduced to stones and ashes by the mongols, idk if it was rebuilt but definitely it would never be the same
Its said...baghdad is cursed..Its built n destroyed many times...but in last days this ll be broken.

Thanks Flash Point! Originally I wrote a script for Rise & Fall of the Abbasid Caliphate 750-945 but it was nearly 10,000 words long so had to cut into two parts! The next part where everything collapses is the most fascinating. Just as epic as the Fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Flash Point History actually it’ll end with the Buyids taking over Baghdad in 945 and the end of Abbasid control of the empire at large. I’ve already done a bunch on the Seljuks and have much more to tell. Kind of treating that as it’s own story. Also there’ll be a stand alone on the Ghaznavids as that’s a whole fascinating story of its own

Hulagu was pretty savage but the fact that he made the Caliph eat his own gold is just gold in itself. A nations treasury is used for the nation but since the Caliph had heaps of it despite being in peril just goes to show the greed and corruption ensuing in the Abbasid dynasty.
It would even be funny if not for the tragic loss of life that happened.
Halagu gave him gold to eat. He responded by saying i cannot eat gold. Halagu then said i you cannot eat gold then why did you hold it for? Why didnt you gave it to your people? I really do wish more people would talk about the islamic golden age, to be fair, ive heard most of europes stories over and over again between their fame and the number of channels focused around it. Even the majority of the greek cities and colonies get ignored typically. Things like the greek mercenaries in asia, i didnt even know about the greeks in bactria fighting the chinese until recently

Well, if you love to read history, you may find some fascinating story in the past like the early Indonesian invasion of east Africa (probably during Srivijaya Empire), naval battle in Malacca (Portugese vs Java), etc.

It's really astonishing how this period of power corresponds with Empires in India, who used to regularly trade with Baghdad. Back then, riches from the Abbasids like Arabian horses and Persian Rugs were extremely valuable items Nobles in India purchased, and it was traded for Jewels and Spices.
Of course the Arabians and the Indians has had great history in trade. Their contribution to the Silk Road has merely shaped it. Two great empires.

Just wanna point out that an islamic caliph isn't 'gods representative on earth' to muslims because in islam spiritual leaders be they caliphs or imams and what not are prohibited from being like their christian counterparts to avoid the borderline worship christian priests and most notably saints recieve ( islam as a whole is incompatible with christianity's idea of priesthood, except from the shia's, sufis, and other sects) they are only the successors of the prophets political powers
It's an allusion towards the catholic pope as he is sometimes referred to as God's representative on Earth. He is alluding to the pope because the pope and the caliph are similar positions. Both are "successors" to an original religious leader - the pope as the bishop of Rome is the successor of Saint Peter (one of Jesus' apostles and regarded as the first bishop of Rome). The caliph is the successor of Mohammad. Both are regarded by many to have authority over all of Christendom/Ummah.

It really isnt, even in the medieval age it wasn't, except from the first few caliphs and some exceptions the Caliphs power dwindled immensely, by the time of the crusades the caliph was just a figure head whose only real power was sultanship over his own personal demesne, power was largely delegated to local sultans who undermined the caliphs power at almost every turn. In the crusades for example it was saladin, a local secular sultan that led the organized jihad against the crusaders while the caliph sat cozy in baghdad. Meanwhile the pope in rome had signifigant influence over medieval politics, he could excommunicate and allow divorces, declare things heresies at will, call for crusades, and just had more overall power over secular kings
The caliph didnt impact the lives of the everyday muslim, or even the muslim nobility of sultans and wali's nearly as much as the pope did everyday europeans and european nobility and royalty
The islamic sunni ortodox view is that mankind is God's representatives on earth, the Prophet being the perfect representative of him in creation, but you're right in Islam there's no pope or clerical hierarchy, being the shias more near to this. And by the way, sufis are not sect, they're sunni muslims.

Yes ancient greek texts were indeed saved and improved upon by arab scholars. And yes the hindu- arabic numerals that we use today were indeed (arab traders brought them into middle east from india ) brought into europe from muslim controlled Spain or al Andalus as it was also called. And that number system did indeed out compete the roman numerals. So much that as U have mentioned before in an earlier comment . That the numbers have been found in carved into the wodden beams on the attic in english church in early 12 century. So they were alteady in use on the British isles during reign of the english King Henry the third ... . And places like Baghdad , Cordoba in spain and muslim controlled Scicily became center of learning . Where many europeans went to study.. And it was seen as huge prestige to studied there . But arabs also brought another thing that shaped modern ... The arabs were first grind coffee beans , then brew it and drink coffeee ...The coffeee bean is native plant to region . Its orginally from Ethiopia in Africa .... And through trade contacs coffee and the coffee bean spread into the rest of middle east and then into europe. So when you walk into cafe and order a coffee latte. Remember that Its only possible because of arab traders ....

European medevil and early modern history woud have looked very different without it And I am of course takling about the Arabian horse . It enteted europe after the first crusade in 1095... Returning crusader knight brought then back as spoils of war . And in in the centuries as light calveri evolded . The arabian horse has reputation of being fast .... That breed of horses made the heavy armored war horse obsolete. Arabian horses and their descendents was used on many european battle fields in centuries after.... So thats another arabian infuence that has had huge impact of World history ....

What so sad is that many of the so called Arabic sientist and poem writers were persians but had to take Arabic names and write in Arabic or they had big problems , likely they were killed if they could not speak Arabic.... and now because people dont know much we call them Arabic sientist or poem writers.
