Can’t believe this doesn’t have more views, ever since the sti was canceled I’ve been waiting for someone to swap it
Help spread it! I want people to know it is possible and it can be done at home in your garage
Well that does take a lottt of money which I’m sure most creators aren’t willing to do to a fairly new car! But I’m sure we’ll get more of this kind of content soon 😊
@@JoeyMontaltoyour channel definitely inspires me I’m actually looking at a 22wrx back home 😅 hopefully I can get it soon
Love watching guys like you build these VB WRX. I enjoy my VB WRX , but think I will be doing a Cobb stage 2 and calling it a day. It’s my fun car and don’t want to have to do trans and brakes and so on and so on.
Yes I agree Cobb stage 2 protuned is probably the max the trans can safely take. The tuner will limit torque to save the trans. As far as the brakes. You can always swap out the pads and fluid for a better bite. I’ll be doing some brake upgrades soon!
Your vb definitely deserves better brakes
Thank you so much for these videos man! They’re really helpful and I can’t wait to do an sti swap myself 🙏🏽
This is one of the best videos on this, thanks for taking the leap and going full send on this.
Thanks for watching! Dccd install video is next week :) stay tuned!
Thanks for the detailed info, Joey. Might be a good idea to list part #s next to your list if you have time.
Thanks very much for doing this! The info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for all the information 🙏🏽
Thanks for watching!
I dont even have an MT but this is incredibly informative and a DOPE build!
Thanks for watching!
I STi Drivetrain swapped my 2019 WRX, glad the new models can be swapped relatively without too much issues as I may want to upgrade in the future. Using a MapDCCD controller to control the differential.
Yep swap is basically the same as previous years. I will be doing the dccd soon! I have the si controller I’ll be using
Thank you, a respectable video🎉 😊 taking me to school, sir❤ love it❤
Thanks for watching!
Super clean! I also have a white 17 sti on the same Kansei Roku wheels 👌
Love these wheels! Good choice ;)
Looking fwd to this
my wife wont let me do any real mods until the warranty is up. so im living bicariously through you
Not to nit-pick, but can we dig in a little on the dimensions where it the STi clutch is larger? I am doing an STi transmission swap on my '22, and the STi clutch I have seems to measure exactly to the O.D. of the clutch on the factory service manual for the 22, which is 240mm/9.45mm. Just want to help clarify on that spec
Great title, good thumbnail, informative, keep it up
Thanks for watching!
And this is why I’m staying stock power lol. The rabbit hole gets expensive! That’s the car Subaru should have released tho, good job!
You can definitely get a tune and intake but yea youre right shouldn't go much further with the stock trans. Thanks for watching man!
Great info. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Hey did you end up having to upgrade your driveshaft or do the rear axles Rick was talking about? Or any negative differences you saw?
I have not upgraded the axles or driveshaft yet. No issue with them yet.
Where did you end up getting the swap kit itself? I've been looking into sourcing one and thought parting out a salvage STI might be a good option
I purchased mine from jdm md motors. They had a few on fb marketplace and on eBay I messaged them and asked if they had a good donor for a 22 wrx.
eBay/Facebook marketplace
I might have missed it, but regarding the SI drive controller, does yours remap the throttle and adjust boost targets as it does in the STI? Or is it just to get the DCCD control?
The si drive controller is only to adjust the dccd. The knob to change from I-s-s# does not work
@@JoeyMontalto that's what I figured. I just wanted to verify as it would offer some new options for my build. Thank you!
I wonder if it’s possible to put a limited slip differential in the VB without swapping the transmission? I think the open differentials are a big drawback even having AWD
Yes it is possible but then you will still break your gear set because the design of the transmission being a split case. It will cost more money to build a wrx trans and even when fully built it will still be weaker than a stock STi trans. Complete waste of money to build the wrx 6speed
When you did this swap, the gearing ratios changed correct? Is it possible to get the gearing ratios to be the same as the VB after the STI swap?
Gear ratios are very similar compared to the stock trans. They make different gear sets for the STi trans if you wanted to change something up but that would be more money to swap out the gear set
@JoeyMontalto Any issues with the driveshaft or axles since they are a little short?
No issues with the axles or driveshaft to report 💪🏻
This video is very informative. Do I understand correctly that after transmission and diff swap speedometer and current gear indicator won't work correctly? Is it a problem and if so is there any remedy for that?
I did talk about that in the video I believe. With the iwire harness everything works correctly except for 5th gear indicator. The gear indicator says 4 when youre in 5th. All other gears show correct. The remedy was my retune from my tuner. When I knew it was ready for the tune he sent me a file and it now shows 5 when in 5th
@@JoeyMontalto Thank you, I somehow missed your explanation of that aspect. Glad that it was resolved, this transmission swap is great mod.
I’m looking for a new platform to tune moving on from my 9th gen civic si. I can’t decide if I should get Vb wrx and do Sti trans swap or buy used Sti. I have a lift and garage full of tools. It’s just the new fa24 motor looks very appealing. Please leave your opinion
The new fa24 motor is great. Only needs the sti trans paired with it. If you have a lift and the tools I'd recommend the VB and doing the trans swap
In case I missed it in the vid, do you need to get the speedometer recalibrated or is it still accurate?
You do not need to recalibrate the speedometer. Works perfect
@@JoeyMontalto Thanks
2:32 Another advantage, is that you get more purr in the exhaust. I'm not kitten around when you run catless.
Ive not had any issues on my 1st gear. Though my 3rd gear seems a little goofy(not grindy but hitting third itself) which I THINK is due to the kartboy shifter, I am not a fan of that one. I do have the clutch line from Jeff as well, just havnt gotten it installed yet.
Install the clutch line and try it out. I have ran a kartboy shifter on all my STIs and never had an issue.
@@JoeyMontalto I think its just the feel of the shifter at this point. I am running another secret Perrin part thats involved but I dont this its due to that. The Kartboy shifter just feels very, clunky to me? Or it may be the STI trans itself as I have never driven one before. Though today I do notice a squeak from the clutch pedal. So thats fun haha.
Thank you for the info…
Thanks for watching!
Freaking awesome 👌
Thanks man!
How much did your fuel economy change? Also how did this change your shift points?
I have not noticed any fuel economy changes and the shift points are basically the same. The ratios are close enough that even without a tune the gear shift indicator was still accurate. We confirmed this when we retuned for the trans.
I have 15 STi & I’ve been having the same weird issue going into first it will grind. I’m going to swap out the line for a stainless one & hopefully that fixes my issue! That’s for the pointer 🫡
Clutch line was a big help! Definitely recommend. Also if your reserve lockout is rattling I just solved that too. Installed the Billetworkz STi reverse lockout. Video should be up!
where did you buy your transmission swap kit from?
I purchased the swap from MD JDM MOTORS. In Maryland. They shipped it to me in NC
How many miles did your transmission have on it when you bought it?
Trans has about 45k miles
Do you know if there’s a way to use the SI knob for something else?
I’m in the process of ordering the spiider dccd from iwire so I will beable to adjust the diff through the si drive control. The actual Si knob I’m not sure if that can be programmed.
Awesome. Thanks again for the videos, keep doing what you’re doing. I’ll do some digging and if I find a way to use it effectively I’ll pass on the info
So OEM SUBARU VB axles fit right into R180 and front STI transmission no problem?
Oem STi axles with the STi trans
@@JoeyMontalto I see. Do OEM WRX VB axles look different and dont fit?
@@stijanjija2225the oem rear axles did not fit into the STi r180 diff. I did not try to fit the front axles. Visually the front STi ones look thicker so I installed those.
How many shop hours should this take to swap?
The shop would go by book time most likely or just a flat out 3-4K labor I would guess
Where did you get the transmission swap from?
I picked up the swap from MD JDM Motors
Do you know what year and how many miles the donor car had?
Yes, 2014 STi trans, diff, and axles 50k miles. 15+ STi drive shaft unknown miles.
Did you need an sti starter as well?
My swap came with the sti starter. But as I said in the video the starter died after a few days. I had to buy a new sti starter.
You hitting 60+ / - in 2nd? Always thought that 57mph hurts my soul at times.
Yes I hit 60 in 2nd. That is mostly from the tune though. Redline is raised to 7k
badass build
Thank you 🙏🏻
I'm just running a "stage 1" OTS tune, so I hope I don't NEED this lol
You're all good with just a stage 1 tune 👍🏻
6 speed swapping my CVT forester already have the donor car
Nice! Sounds like a fun project
Brembos next??
Definitely something I want to do. Kinda hoping 2024 they have a wrx with a brembo package. I'd buy the OEM brembos and bolt right on without cutting the dust shields
Cat!!!
CAT
The gearing that was in my 07 sti is far superior to my wife’s 2022 wrx. My 07 sti did 150mph in 5th and my wife’s 22 wrx couldn’t even do that in 6th.
07 STI has long gearing similar to the ppg gearset
Cat's
That’s a pretty good looking Honda civic.
Lol good one 🤪
it’s almost funnier the 1000th time
