    Excellent list. I started watching the Red Wings as a kid when Reed Larson and John Ogrodnick were on the dead wings. Reed Larson was a beast. Not only great offensively, but great defensively as well. He blocked a lot of shots back in the days when guys didn’t really do that much. Brian Rafalski was another great defenseman. Kind of underappreciated nowadays. Doug Brown scored some clutch goals for us in the playoffs. In 2002, when Canada won the gold in USA won the silver, at the end of the game when everyone left the ice, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Chris, Chelios, and Brett Hull Stood arm and arm at Center ice to take a picture . I knew right then and there we were going to win the cup that year.

    I'm so glad Brett Hull is on this list. He's my all-time favorite hockey player.

    He wasnt the greatest by any measure .. but i really liked Douggie Brown . He was a big factor in the 98 cup

    Rafalski is one of my favorite wings ever and he was dominant in the 2012 Olympics, the reason team USA was so good

    Gentlemen.. Let me tell you about Reed Larson.. Dude could do it all.. Score, set up goals, fight.. But the most memorable Reed Larson trait was his absolute CANNON of a shot! I was at a game, I think at the Joe, against LA... Rogie Vachon in net.. Larson let's a shot go from center ice.. Vachob never moved.. Never saw it... Another quick story... Larson was given a penalty shot and he decided to wind up from the circle and let one rip.. Didn't score on that.. Met him a few times in the Olymoia room.. Super nice guy.. HUGE j hands

    He didn't score many goals, and he was a part of the the declining years, but he played 8 seasons with the Wings, one of my favorite players from the post Cup years: Drew Miller. Not a top 5, but definitely should be an honorable mention. So incredibly hard working, defensively responsible forward playing on one of the best third lines in hockey at the time.

    Derian Hatcher honorable mention!!!!!! Aaaahhhhhhhh!

      Yeah, we signed him the year before the cap was implemented. He played a handful of games, tearing his acl. He wasn't a huge factor in Detroit history . As soon as the cap was implemented he was one of the first to get bought out or released.

    Berggrens problem is that he is not offensively to be a top 6 forward, and not good enough defensively to be a bottom 6 player. Verano has filed for arbitration and that would open the buyout window (Holl) and no one will trade for assets that don't have contracts. I personally think that Danielson will win a spot in training camp and center the 2nd line. Kasper is another possibility. The other problem is the number of players with movement clauses. I fully expect Stevie to move some depth players before the season starts.

    • @T-Will-4554
      @T-Will-4554 Před měsícem +1

      Berggren is not being weaponized properly. He always gets stuck on the last line with less than average minutes, without good wingers. He 100% will be better than Veleno without question.

    • @sallybags9090
      @sallybags9090 Před měsícem

      I agree, Veleno is a bit more physical and he is a natural center(i think). I believe thats the biggest reason Veleno has been kept around. His D is solid too. Burgers is very talented setup guy and has a nice shot. I think his D is good. He's not as physical but he's talented. I truly believe Veleno is being kept for being a natural center. He also has improved every year. I think the front office wants to develop Veleno to the point we can get decent trade value. I also believe Danielson is the most NHL ready center/ forward we have. I think he could play right now and i would prefer it. I think Danielson will gain more playing in Detroit than the AHL. He would be learning from Kane, The Cat, Larkin, Raymond, Seider, Tarashanko and Compher. Compher is very underrated. His two way game is solid. Its going to be interesting.

    Not sure if you compare "apples to apples" when you compare points between Reed Larson, who was a defenseman, and Larkin being a forward.

      @@user-pd5qz2vt2c I saw Modano play with the Wings, he wasn't very good for us. He was a shell of his former self, and because the team was so deep he was buried in the line-up.

      @captbloodbeard I read the title as top five American players who played for the Wings. Modano is the highest scoring American player thus far. Sure, Matthew's will pass that up eventually, Modano came home to fulfill a lifetime fantasy of wearing the Winged Wheel. I will honor that.

    • @captbloodbeard

      @@user-pd5qz2vt2c the episode was the top American born players careers as Red Wings. No one is gonna argue against Modano being one of the best American born players, but as a Wing, not so much.

      I got a chance to talk to him over the phone. It was in the 90's. My family moved him. The trucking company my step dad worked for had contracts to move Detroit Red Wings, Tigers and Lions. Step dad moved Steve Yzerman twice. He wasn't around the day of the moving. But he did sign 8x10's of him and the Cup in 1997. We did move Larionov 4 times! He requested my step dad moving him. He was the guy i talked to the most. The dude was one of the most down to earth, nice person. I moved him the year they won the Cup in 2001/02. Told him in his driveway, "no team will take you guys in a 7 game series." He laughed and said, "well its going to be tough because everyone expects us to win." I was 17 and 18yrs old that year.

    Also, too bad that Modano suffered that horrible injury where skate blade slashed his wrist if I recall properly. If that didn’t happen, I think he could’ve played a couple of years with us.

      Gordie and Ted Lindsay get my vote. Lindsay was a great party of the Detroit community. Retired Wings would play against local teen teams in the early 80s.

    Best Red Wings were Canadian and Russian

    • @danb239

      100% and Swedish, as a Canadian Red Wings fan it sucks hearing these guys say they hope Canada's cupless drought continues, they would rather a divison rival like Florida win than Edmonton. Yzerman and Howe are Canadian and 2 of the best players in history, played their entire carrers in the NHL for Detroit. Red Wings are truly a global team, Seider from Germany, Kasper from Austria, Brandsegg-Nygard from Norway, the sphere of influence is wide and many kids all around the world are growing up cheering for the Wings.
      My Top 5 Red Wings from other countries:
      Canada: Howe, Yzerman, Delvecchio, Lindsey, Shanahan.
      honorable mentions to Bowman, Sawchuck, Osgood, The Grind Line
      Russia: Fedorov, Datsyuk, Konstantinov, Larionov, Kozlov
      Sweden: Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Kronwall, Franzen.

      @@danb239Buddy, im a die hard Wings fan and throughout this rebuild i have been hoping, rooting for a Canadian team to win the cup. I was hoping Edmonton beat Florida. I wanted to see a Canadian team win AND Ken Holland get another Cup. I have also rooted for Toronto and some of their fans hate Detroit. This guys and this podcast doesn't speak for all of us Red Wing fans. I find them to be quite elitist at times.
