In the Beginning (also released as Cassandranite) is an album featuring the demo tapes recorded in 1965 by trumpeter Woody Shaw in his original quest for a recording contract which was eventually released on the Muse label in 1983.[1][2] Cassandranite was released as part of Woody Shaw: The Complete Muse Sessions by Mosaic Records in 2013.
Some interesting, uneven, but worthwhile '65 material from trumpeter Woody Shaw. He was still fresh on the jazz scene and had only recently recovered from the death of mentor Eric Dolphy. Shaw teamed with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassists Ron Carter or Paul Chambers on these cuts. His potential certainly emerges, as does the fact he was a tentative, unsure soloist at this juncture. Want to be featured on this channel? Submit your content to: berniesbootlegs@gmail.com

Woody was up there with the greatest of the greatest. Transformed the language. We haven't caught up with him yet.
Totally agree with you brother
So well put…I patterned my playing after him but it’s real hard to do…met him at a rehearsal…funny dude..and v humble
Amazing God given talent. Beautiful technique, total mastery of the trumpet. Such a pure soul.
It's a shame Alfred Lion did not produce this album for Blue Note, it would have been a perfect addition to the Blue Note library.
This is a really great piece of work. This was the year Horace Silver's stellar Cape Verdean Blues was released, with both Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson in the lineup. Masterful music.♥️
Woody was one of a kind the art of woody shaw. 🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎁💯🔥🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺
This is just a bloody great album. First recorded for the Blue Note label in 1965 by (tell tale, like in the pocket) Rudy van Gelder. A brilliant bunch of side-men playing their hearts out. Fantastic hard-bop Jazz at its best. Dig this Gem folks & Cheers!
Friends w Rudy s nephew…what a crazy dude Rudy was…and what a sound he shaped!…love love this stuff.Woody was my hero…monster…Joe prob my fav w
eeds,an…also incredibly underrated…2 lions
@@jayclarke9611 He definitely created the iconic - Blue Note - sound, Jay. Be well & Cheers!
One of the unknown treasures...this record is as good as it gets...LY on piano! and Herbie too. ….great Joe tunes!…like the continuance of Unity w no organ. And gorgeous Woody the Man
all rip knowing we still revel in the magic u made in your lifetimes…awesome!
Woody is one of my favorite trumpeters. Just sounds delightful!
Excellent record.Joe Henderson and Woody Shaw.🔥🔥🔥
Bought this used record on a whim and also because Joe Henderson was on sax.
This recording made me a Woody Shaw fan. Paul and Joe Chambers laid down some fantastic bass and drum work as well. Superb!
I recall Miles, saying somewhere at that time, the only Trumpet player saying anything, was Woody Shaw ( just saying)
Anyway, Peace to all!!
My favorite Woody Shaw album. What a stellar line up!!
Great album with a terrific all star lineup,
to say the least it’s jazz at its finest.
❤
The keys on the last track are epic...
7.←The real title is 'Katrina Ballerina'
39:30 is this Joe Henderson on soprano?
YOUR VIDEO?! You've got BALLS, my friend! Are you paying the heirs of these artists even one penny? Yeah, that's what I thought.People: buy the CDS instead of supporting thieves like 'Bootleg Bernie'---whose name says it ALL!! Joel Fass---jazz musician...
isn't the last song katerina ballerina?
What the hell? Both "Medina" and "Soulfully" on this compilation are wrong. They're "Sanyas" and "Katrina Ballerina" and they're from the Moontrane.
The rest is fine and I'm thankful for the upload anyway
This isn't the right album here - Katrina Ballerina is featured which is off Moontrane. Not sure what this is?
Huh?
Woody Shaw, baddest of the bad,and a very beautiful person as well,A great teacher and inspiration to me and all upcoming promising trumpet players, long live the spirit and music of Woody Shaw.
Woody was a monster. On this date he was what, 21? Talk about confidence and poise for that age.Played our club down in Lakewood NJ a few times - early 70s - and I never missed a note. Showed up with Junior Cook and Steve Turre. He left us too damn soon. Same goes for Joe.
he does not sound unsure at all.
Wow! I bet you feel fortunate!!!
The most innovative trumpet player of this century or any other for that matter, one whos intervalic approach set new standards in the trumpet world of improvisation and spirituallity, his music will stand the tests of time will endure for eternity.
I would like to thank Mr. Bernie Sanders for his Bernie's Bootlegs uploads on YT. Being a real jazz-addict since my adolescence, Mr. Sanders keeps me going and staying a listener. Enjoy youselves, people.

Thank you
yessssssssss
This was indeed the stuff! Young Woody’s first recorded outing as a leader. Cheers!
Thanks!
To me one of woodys greatest albums. What an incredible group with herbie, joe, paul and joe chambers etc.!!!
I think Woody shaw and Joe Hendeson were very similar musician in the concept for music. They took care of jazz traditional, however, they also were challenging to new things! R.I.P.
Woody est un monument de la trompette . Son son est fluide , un exemple pour les jeunes trompettiste . Il combine magistralement
technique et harmonie .
Cutting edge 65, amazing insight, the group says it all.
Wow Larry Young on piano? Cool
Yeah Crazy...Herbies on some...What did Larry do w his foot on these cuts? lol
At the end of the day there is a strange connection between Shaw and Wheeler. That being a commitment to non-diatonic intervalic Trumpet lines with a focus on chromatic modern schemes of virtical organization. They were both unconventional jazz composers who's compositions are universally acknowledged.
Heavy. Thanks for the up.
Thank you for uploading this gem!
Stunning performance ! THK
Made my dawn happier, ty
How transparent is the drumming by Joe Chambers!
yes joe s drumming is so clear and this ride wonderfull i love it
I told woody i wrote lyrics to moontrane and he told me to record it now igotta get musicians that can play like that i got a blessing of a chance to sit in with woody george cables ,andJoe Henderson
Eclectic
grazie
Sweet. Beautifully poised and articulated, finely executed. Thanks for this.Cost ranges from £300 - 900 on Amazon ! Is it included in any box collections of Woody's work?
And another fine Jazz musician bites the dust early through drugs. I know he wa hit by a train which severed his left arm but by then he was losing his sight.
whoa, didnt know this existed!
A correction: the last track is actually "Katrina Ballerina", not "Soulfully I Love You"
The bonus track is actually Katrina Ballerina, it's mislabeled as Soulfully I Love You
Did Woody record Soulfully I Love You ? I always think of that as Billy Harper.
Any suggestions of who the fastest trumpet played might be? I like hectic bebop/hardbop players and have a hard time finding fast and hectic trumpet players. I like Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, and obviously Woody Shaw to name a few. I’m basically trying to find the Johnny Griffin of the trumpet. Any suggestions?
Young Arturo Sandoval live concerts have a lot of that.
Do you ask inane questions at school too?
Robert Lepper real helpful
@@robertlepper5460 I don't know if I'd put his question in the inane category, but I'm quite certain your reply is.
Clifford Brown was quite fast in executing tongued phrases. Extremely impressive.
@bernie ... even before reading the description, I felt Woody was playing out of pocket. Almost weighing the merit of each idea before playing it. Your description i.e. 'unsure soloist', is a perfect articulation of what I was thinking.
I think adding bonus tracks from other albums, such as #5 and #6, is unnecessary. The originality of the album is more important!
It's just crazy sad... of all the albums in the world, THIS ONE is OOP (out of print)???????????
No it ain't. It was re-released prob in the '90's as as the title cut, 'Cassandranite.' and you can easily get it on Amazon. And of course it's on CZcams, so do't freak out unless you're a purist who needs the original of everything!
