  • Victor Davis Hanson spoke on October 2, 2019 during the 175th anniversary celebration.
    Victor Davis Hanson, the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, is also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor of classics emeritus at California State University, Fresno.
    Dr. Hanson earned his B.A. at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his Ph.D. in classics from Stanford University. In 2007, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal, and in 2008, he received the Bradley Prize.
    He is a columnist for National Review Online and for Tribune Media Services, and has published in several journals and newspapers, including Commentary, the Claremont Review of Books, The New Criterion, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Hanson has written or edited numerous books, including Wars of the Ancient Greeks, A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War, and his latest book, The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won.
    Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
    The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
    By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

      Victor has that confidence that can only come from having well thought out views. As Christians we have the same confidence, thousands of years of oral & written traditions, yeah, the current Pope may have some wacky social views, but the strength of all the doctors of the Church and knowledge of One God and the Incarnation and the Holy Spirit overcomes all missteps.

      We are well becoming lazy minded, and squander time because without the fear of God the left is going to live forever in their creepy self delusions. Who much more selfish can we become? Principals and good character and Laws are all bendable and in many cases, nullified.

      Will to Power
      Lots of chatter, but people may have wrong ideas about in what matter to use and when. Right now, the people need to start showing up at their local town/city meanings demanding removal of foreign ACTORS from their courts and tax collector offices. And, demand a local Police department display of their force swearing allegiance to THE PEOPLE...not a foreign system. And, the people need to realize there are good men and women on their police forces that risk their lives to actually serve, protect, and defend them in emergencies. And, those officers need to file whistleblower complaints on those who should not be there because bad actors will be a stain on the entire department, which is how things have gotten so bad in communities. All that being said, a good many people would like nothing more than to have troops shut down Congress until every member is reviewed by investigators with direct criminal referrals into military TRIBUNALS.

      It is a FACT that the US is in the middle of a cultural revolution. So far, it has mostly been with words, but I believe that will change. The Marxists in what was the Democrat Party LIE to the people in Public hearings, the so called PRESS have made a mockery of Freedom of the Press. They Publicize a False narrative to promote their Marxist Agenda. Marxist Activists have been trying to eliminate the Electoral College in order to take the rights of middle America away from us. They want a direct Democracy so the can jam their big city way of life down the throats of rural people that wouldn't be caught DEAD in a big city.
      Politicians like Senile Nancy Pelosi lives in a walled mansion with armed guards in the SF bay area. Big mouth Maxine Waters owns several large, expensive homes and lives in a Mansion that is not even in her own District, which is required by Law. Both of these two Traitors are millionaires. They have both had financial projects approved in their Districts approved by Congress that directly benefited them. In a different time of our country's History, these two phonies would have been HUNG. Instead, we observe and hear the garbage these Traitors say to the Public as a matter of course. Apparently, the only way to stop it is with Civil War. Keep your guns, you're going to need them.

    What a wonderful historian, orator, and mind Hanson is. This speech should be required listening because it broaches very important subjects that I think many don't understand, that Hanson does a great job of clarifying. His explanation of the importance of citizenship, the differences between versions of nationalism(good and bad) the Constitution, where the societal erosions are along with institutional foundations, and even how "cancel culture," mobocracy, elitism(transnationalism), and technocratic hegemony, are all discussions that need to be had and made clear.
    Hanson's speech is invaluable here, and I hope many pay attention closely. He almost seems both concerned and saddened by the state of decay in this great country, and even internationally; especially since the ability to get out of this rut is available in many ways and we seem to be encouraging our own demise.
    Good stuff. Gave me some stuff to think about.

    The decline of American nationalism had its physical origins in Kennedy's 1960s Immigration Act. Before that, the American peoples were predominantly of western European origin and more or less shared a common European ethnicity and value system. It was therefore possible to realize the great unifying ideas embodied in the US Constitution, which had their ideological origin in Europe. It was a conceit of the Founding Fathers to imagine that their creation was universally applicable; it was designed by Europeans for an essentially European population. Since the 60s, extra-European mass immigration has been changing the ethnicity and value systems of the country. Consequently we see the decline of American nationalism and the steady disintegration of civic life (Re. Putnam's Bowling Alone and Murray 's Coming Apart).
    (A similar pattern can be seen in the late Roman Empire. Rome's great unifying idea was civitas, citizenship, which was extendable to the ethnically and culturally similar Mediterranean world. This worked well enough until mass immigration from the north and the east upset the Empire's ethnic composition and value systems, and things began coming apart).
    Continued mass third-world immigration into the West will inevitably bring about its collapse. This is of course what the globalists want. And those well-meaning, empathy-torn, pro-mass immigration liberals who cannot and will not see the the longer-term consequences of their beliefs, well ... they're the useful idiots.

    • @jenniferlawrence2701
      @jenniferlawrence2701 Před 4 lety +7

      People tend to forget that Rome was not a liberal democracy held together by shared civic values, but a series of dictatorships under the stern rule of an imperial power. Diversity can be held together by force (modern Russia, for example), but when people are free they inevitably assert their tribal identities and differences.

    • @EricBoston1992
      @EricBoston1992 Před 4 lety +4

      Jennifer Lawrence - Rome was a republic mostly comprised of people with a significantly similar cultural, intellectual & philosophical background. As it expanded, the shared background of the Roman population became increasingly diluted.
      Likewise, the republican nature of the Roman political system eroded, but largely what truly dismantled the republic was the introduction of having an emperor; which, if I’m not mistaken, Julius Caesar was the 1st Roman Emperor.
      So you’re right, & wrong, depending on which time period of Ancient Rome we’re looking at.

    • @jenniferlawrence2701
      @jenniferlawrence2701 Před 4 lety +1

      @@EricBoston1992 When did Rome have universal suffrage? If something like ANTIFA wanted to organize politically would it be (a) crushed by force, or (b) crushed by force? The point is that those (and there are many, strangely) who say _"Well multiculturalism/multi-racialism worked in Rome, so it can work in our liberal Democracies"_ are not just comparing apples and oranges, but apples and tractors.
      Rome's Republic - politically advanced though it was for it's time - would be considered virtually a fascist dictatorship now if it's system was implemented today. Individuals did not have anywhere near as much liberty as they do now under liberal democracy. My point is that with our modern freedom comes the ability for anyone to engage in divisive identity politics - to an extent that people in more authoritarian political systems can't, as such things would be shut down by the powers that be.

    • @jenniferlawrence2701
      @jenniferlawrence2701 Před 4 lety +4

      @@EricBoston1992 continued: In states with high degrees of individual liberty, social unity/harmony has to arise organically if it is to happen at all. In more authoritarian states (e.g modern Russia again) they can have quite a lot of ethnic/tribal diversity in the federation and still have social unity/harmony enforced from above by the state. The moment they become a real liberal democracy those various groups are all going to be agitating for separation, autonomy, power, etc and the federation will gradually break up (e.g the Chechens and others will want to branch off on their own).
      So the choice we in the West are faced with is: do we prioritize Diversity or Liberty? If we prioritize the former (as we have, sadly) we can't be surprised that it produces tribalism, division, and ultimately authoritarianism (see the various "hate speech" laws and the like springing up to placate the feelings of groups who's votes political parties want). If we want to prioritize individual liberty and still have high degrees of social harmony, then we need to consider what kind of demographic conditions are most favorable to those outcomes (i.e high degrees of homogeneity).
      This is ultimately why I believe Hansen is wrong about Ethnic-Nationalism. The divisive identity politics (and the corresponding erosion of individual freedom that goes with it) we see in the US, the UK and France (etc) now is the new normal, because it is the natural result of Diversity + Freedom. Humans are irredeemably tribal, and we must plan accordingly.
