I do not know what influence an agreement made by the Spanish authorities in Texas around 1820 with Moses Austin could have had. When Moses Austin offered the Spanish authorities to bring settlers to Texas, the Spanish authorities recommended that the families of settlers he brought to Texas be "preferably German and Irish and both preferably Catholic." The prize given to the settlers was tempting: 500 hectares of arable land in the valley of the Brazos River for every family , (which I believe they planted with cotton) or 1,500 hectares if the land was only suitable for cattle pasture In exchange, the settlers would have to dance with the Comanches ( It seems that this was following the recommendations of a Dutchman who called himself "Baron of Bastrop" or something similar.)
