I never understood why people watch videos that are on topics which they have no interest or expertise, and give a thumbs down. Mozart may not be everyone's cup of tea, and classical flute may not seem hip to many, but if you are interested in classical flute this video is a gold mine. Any young flutist with a goal to get into a decent music school, cane count on spending so much time learning this piece. Nina shares her personal approach to putting life and expression into this piece, which you can't even begin to do until you have the piece and technique ingrained in your mind and finger memory muscle. Thank you Nina!

I teach English and US History in high school, and I don't have an ounce of musical talent in me but I watch your video just to imbibe on the enthusiasm, energy and love that permeate so prominently when you speak. I only wish my students feel the same when they see me talk about Shakespeare, Steinbeck and Coelho. Thank you~!

Good point about Mozart. treating the Flute just like sung parts, so it's up to the player to act like a singer to really bring his vision to life. I love his horn concertos, but always hear the sonority and articulation that's the special reserve of brass. Mozart didn't really explore the unique qualities of flute the same way, but left plenty of scope for the player. The helpful tips here apply to nearly all of the romantic music up to the present day. Great tutorial to watch a few times!

We are so on the same page regarding Mozart! I have always felt that his gift really shines when he's writing for singers. Because of this, I have always modeled my Mozart performances after great singers
The video example was a great idea. Also check out Natalie Dessay singing Queen of the Night. Since she is a soprano, her range is closer to ours as flutists. She amazes me with the clarity and flexibility with which she can sing runs and scalar passages. Great video, Nina!

Hi, Nina! Working on Mozart's Concerto in D right now and your video has helped me so much! But I need some advice about how to clean the opening trill and C#-D ornament. Do you use the real fingerings for that? Obviously I have to practice it, but is there a way to make that sound cleaner (like yours lol). It is, after all, the first thing the judges/audience hears!
    Thanks so much!

Great advice ..love the diaphragm advice , the articulation , character differentiation...not losing the note etc.....othrwise the whole thing becomes' sawdust'! Without the two fingers the C/ C# trill will be out of tune. The trill key is a great device!
This works great, but takes a good deal of work. Low notes! Great ...I think we can tend to be too tight in executing these.
