Cool ship. Great for casual x-wing night at your FLGS. FFG really dropped the ball not putting K2-SO in this expansion. It could be that they didn’t have the info and a short production timeline, but for whatever reason, I’m really disappointed he wasn’t in the expansion as a pilot and crew. K2-SO’s character was so crucial to the success of the Rebels in the film and my favorite character which is why I’m very disappointed at his absence in this expansion.
+T Hollins I agree it was most likely limited information. I mean, Cassian is a better pilot than Bodhi, who was literally a pilot as his career? Bistan got a crew card instead of K2? Bistan was in the movie for like 30 seconds.
The Cardboard Dungeon you could justify Cassian’s better pilot skill as being a result of his familiarity with the U-Wing, while Bodhi has never flown one before _Rogue One_ - in fact, I can’t remember him ever flying a U-Wing.
As usual, I love your reviews. They always help me think about the ship in a different way. So now I'm going to fly this one next time I play a casual game. I hadn't really thought of it as a large base X-Wing. It's fun flying IG-2000 around so I think this will be fun to fly. Need to think of some squads though - which is always half the fun while you are waiting until the next time you can play.
Great review man! I really like flying the u wing. i like heff, extra munitions, sabine and chopper crew, cluster bombs. i get bumped, free action to drop the bombs :)
I think this is going to be really controversial, might be a good topic for a video. I understand that they will have conversion kits, but does that mean that ALL of our upgrade cards currently will become useless??? The might seem unfair to people who have invested a lot into the game.
13:38 Eh, you really cant. The major drawback of this card is you can only flip it After you maneuver. So if you want to do that turn around, you have to set the title on the previous turn, which completely telegraphs your plans for your next turn. It would have been much better if you flipped the card BEFORE the maneuver instead of after. And i feel this ship would get more play if that were the case. As far as Jyn, She works really well on the Gunship or Arc-170 as her ability isnt limited to the Primary arc, so the back and side arc will increase her field of focus token stacking.
+lyianx Can't what? Obviously you need to plan ahead and have flipped the title the previous round, but you can also flip the title to Landing mode to mess with your opponent if you want. They'll be expecting the zero speed maneuver which lets you do something else. It can work really well if you've got Sabine on board and the ability to drop a bomb.
Cant surprise them with a turn-around. Even if you flip and dont turn around, they know it will be possible. Plus, even doing that, bluff or not, you are sacrificing an agility to do it. I still think it would have been better if it was done before the maneuver. Then you could surprise them and they'd always be wondering if you were just going to stop and turn around while they were planning their move, or keep your agility.
+lyianx Yeah that's true, it's tough to surprise an opponent with that move. But it might not matter depending on the situation. They might have no choice but to fly past you. But yeah, "surprise" was probably not the best choice of words.
The rules of the game specify that only ships from primary factions and their linked subfaction can be included in the same squadron. Right now this means you can have Rebel and Resistance together, and Empire/First Order. Scum & Villainy currently has no subfaction. Of course, that requirement only applies to tournament events; if you're playing casual X-Wing you can make up whatever rules you want and fly Vader alongside Luke Skywalker, etc.
I think my one disappointment with this expansion was how underwhelming the crew upgrades were. Jyn is at least a little interesting now on a gunship, but I’ve never seen any of the others get used. When you compare it to another crew-heavy expansion like the Ghost, it’s night and day. Kanan, Sabine, Hera, Zeb, and Chopper (just because he’s free) still all see play in tons of different lists.
That's a good point. Or Heroes of the Resistance - both crew Rey and Finn see play quite a lot. Finn is an auto-include for pilot Rey and Rey is great crew on a lot of ships. I've used Baze Malbus when I don't have enough points but want a Gunner-like effect, but he only works when you have multiple targets and so I've never found him super useful.
I hope that rebels get a good support crew that would make transport style ships like this worth flying because imperials have their emperor palpatine which makes flying transports powerful
Rebels have a lot of great crew, just not anything super powerful like Palpatine, and their crew tend to be defensive instead of offensive. I think that the bigger issue is that the Rebel playstyle doesn't really favor the same "shuttle with powerful crew plus one or two fighters" the way Imperial lists do. Because the Rebels get a lot of that same support from their pilot abilities, so instead of a crewed shuttle they have Lowhrick or Fenn Rau doing amazing things for their squadron from the pilot seat.

Also, inspired recruit crew shows troops leaving through a front ramp and I believe the U wing only has side loading doors. Oops!

Glad to see this review after so long! I happen to like this ship. It really is just the rebel version of the Lambda shuttle.

Great review. I love the look of this ship and am disappointed it doesn't perform well on the battlefield. That hasn't stopped me from trying though!

If this ship also had an astromech slot it would actually be fun and maybe make up for the large base.
It's all about to change with the announcement of X-Wing 2.0 today. U-Wings might become viable!

Bodhi should have been a dual card with the other side being for the imperials.
It looks strange on a large base... they shoulda just put it on a small base >.
Yeah, it's definitely a gameplay balance decision.
