Can you beat Sekiro with ONLY Combat Arts?

- People frequently criticize Sekiro's Combat Arts for not being very good or useful. So what if they were only things you could use to fight enemies?
#sekiro #sekiroshadowsdietwice #challengerun - Hry
Since you play on PC, you can try out the Weapon Wheel mod which lets you switch between combat arts without having to pause the game and ruin the flow
oh that sounds really cool!! I'll have to look into that
@@umbekpls come back and post again :
@@bonbon9159 trying man. Life hard.
I get it man. Take your time. Sekiros got a niche community and from what I've seen are always super nice.
If not trolly sometimes lol@@umbek
@@Tortuga2223a can't get away from some level of trolling at best and elitism at worst in FromSoft games lmao
People who criticize combat arts probably still see Sekiro as a souls game . Sekiro is like tenchu, it's a different game in it own!! So combat arts are like rings and talismans and incantation in other souls and soul like game. So I think it's cool..
Agree. Only thing I would personally want to change is make it possible to equip more than one. Just two to swap between would be enough to make me happy. You can even have three tools on at once, and those are physical objects, skills should be possible to do the same thing with.
@@vitterling I agree to this bro. Also, u should be able to use the ceremonial tento 3 times at the same time, so that we can enter any fight with a hefty 35 spirit emblems!!
@@vitterling I think in LMTSR and Resurrection mod, these 2 features are added!!
@@rikudosennin4531 There is also a mod you can get where it just adds that feature, and nothing else, so there is that solution. But I wish the game had it, vanilla. And stacking the tanto uses should absolutely work! You'd be giving up 1,5 healthbars so it wouldn't even be super free.
I do think some of the criticisms are valid because a lot of the Combat Arts simply aren't very strong. Once you get to a certain level of competence they become icing on the cake - you use them to make the game more fun and interesting as you explore the depth of the combat. But until you reach that level a lot of them just aren't really super worth using imo. And yes agreed they definitely should have made you able to equip 3 at a time
Phenomenal combat skills, what a fantastic playthrough. Great video making as well. The best part was Isshin's posture in 3rd phase getting broken by Sekiro punching him
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed 🤘
Isshin literally holding a glock to Wolf's face and seeing him just punch it out of Isshin's hands is so great.
This is the best iteration I’ve seen of the “no prostethic, no using the sword, spirit emblem only…” challenge run. Great combat, great showcases, and just amazing gameplay overall! Cheers
Thank you so much!
He perfectly deflected Genichiro’s flurry combo. I’m impressed!
If I ever actually did it perfectly, that was an anomaly 🤣 there's one particular attack in that combo that I ALWAYS miss, I simply can't get the timing right. But thank you!
@@umbeksame I’ve done it a bunch of times but I can’t seem to understand the perfect timing, it’s really strange
Dude that last fight was great. I love the senpou combat arts. And the way Isshin will extend his combos for what feels like ever if you deflect instead of mikiri is so badass.
Dude forreal once you get to a certain point choosing to not use Mikiri actually makes the game way more fun
@@umbek7:56
Just for the perfect deflect im gonna like the video
both the corrupted monk actually never stops attacking aside from the retreating spin move if you dont mikiri counter the thrust combo ender
@@kevinlu9558 It never goes on for as long as I'm hoping lol, usually in my experience after deflecting the thrust she'll do one more attack and then almost always do the retreating sweep which functionally ends the combo most of the time
@@umbekongbal has a video where he jumps towards the monk while she's performing the retreating sweep and he deflects the follow up to the sweep, which continues the combo.
Well done. Idea for you: This run, but in New Game + (all arts are unlocked) and you have to use a different art on each boss (and minibosses, too, if there are enough arts in the game for that, but if there aren't then just bosses). You're allowed to use multiple arts in one fight if you want, but if you do you can't use any of them in another fight.
Ooooooooooh. That is VERY cool. I might just have to do that
Never thought praying strikes was so useful, and it looks so cool!
It's mostly strong against human-sized enemies but I also found it really useful against the Corrupted Monk as well
Whirlwind slash is one of my favourites combat arts , i used it even in late game along with ichimonji Double
I think I underestimated it until recently, it is actually pretty useful
After a little while I avoided using Ichimonji and its double counterpart in my first and subsequent playthroughs due to it's insane strength.
ichimonji is good for Emma
You can cheese both snake eyes with the combat art from pot noble. It can punish her shots on block from close range, which will usually result in her attempting another shot. You can just loop that repeatedly while watching for a grab every now and then
Floating Passage? interesting, I'll have to try it out. I personally feel that it largely sucks lol so I basically never use it except during this run
@@umbek it's very good against enemies that can't power armour through it.. I used it a few days ago to beat both snake eyes on a base stat run, interrupts majority of her attacks including the grab at times. It's not legit cheese like using ash on a boss, but the art is so effective at looping her that it feels as though it's cheese.
@@loto7197 interesting. You're right that it's good against enemies that can't tank through it, but imo most of the enemies that can't tank through it aren't really strong enough to justify using combat arts against anyway lol, but cool to know it has some more applications than I realized!
@@umbek other than snake eyes you may be somewhat correct, but there's probably a bunch more out there that you don't know of. It's fast acting, forward moving and capable of combo-ing before certain opponents can get a single strike off, I'd say it's pretty underrated.
Honestly Whirlwind Slash is hugely underrated. Carried me through the first 3/4 of the game.
Agreed, it's very useful! I underutilized it (and also Combat Arts in general) during my first playthrough but it's very good against a lot of enemies
If I recall correctly, mortal draw does the damage of its empowered counterpart and comes out quicker if performed midair.
Is that right? Interesting
-Well done, Sekiro
-Farewell

*Immortality severed*
I love this moment even now after rewatching it for like dozens of times
Perfection 👌
Agreed
Mortal draw was the biggest help during my first playthrough.
Was never stuck on any boss for more than an hour because of it.
It is comically overpowered lol
This is how i beated great shinobi owl , by spamming the mortal draw after he jumps at you .
Dude, I Love that you used praying strikes on Isshin! Awesome use of the combat arts!
Thanks! Praying Strikes is pretty useful against both him and Owl I've found
The only reason I never used CAs much is cause the key combination meant I would usually end up doing a normal attack or blocking when trying to use them
It's a weird input for sure
Really cool video mate :D
For Shume Masaji Oniwa and the other guy, I normally use gachiin's sugar and take out the other guy and then focus on the miniboss. I think you have to use the sugar if you don't want to get detected, at least from my experience. Also, I noticed the headless ape will attack you after his terror scream alongside the long combo of the other ape if you stand close to the scream attack. If you distance yourself accordingly then as you said, the headless ape will stand back.
thank you! interesting to know about the Headless Ape
7:22 throwing a ceramic at a guys head and the sbabbing with a swrod is the best stelth
I couldn't imagine doing this without the weapon wheel mod or mikiri
also damn I havent even SEEN anyone try to use deflects on ogre or bull
didnt even cross my mind, and sekrio was the first fromsoft game I played
Once you learn the timing to deflect the bull's attacks it literally becomes such an easy fight because he has so few attacks lol
The poised combat started in Demons Souls and is more like this games style, rather than its later iteration Elden Ring. I believe this game was testing that system. Which helped refine it to the modern poise system
I'm well aware, I started with Dark Souls. Elden Ring perfected it by giving poise/stance to every single enemy imo, instead of only being able to stagger certain bosses and enemies.
Lovely combat as always, I've been following your channel for a while after taking on the game, and you can actually punish stomp Owl and twinblade monk's perilous sweep attack by jumping backwards and stomping them because they dash too far off I think it's also true with genichiro
Just wanted to point it out which I bet you already know :3
Owl and Genichiro are pretty easy to do the jump counter with, I honestly never tried it against the twinblade monks because I usually just try to avoid fighting them 😆
I use some for fun to be honest, but the main reason why I don't use them more often is the cool ones use emblems. You can use a lesser version once you run out of them but then you remember that prostethic weapons use them too and they won't work at all without them, even a sad shuriken to lure a single enemy away from a group.
At the very most I go whirlwind for places with groups of enemies like Mibu Village. Nightjar reversal the rest of the time to quickly get close and attack an enemy while reversal often hits and lets you get away from a counterattack. And ichimonji double to break stronger enemy posture at no cost like with mortal blade. Also you can't access the mortal blade till later so that's the alternative option.
But yeah, using the ones with a cost only for fun so combat isn't always the same.
I honestly don't find the Spirit Emblems to me much of a hindrance tbh, unless you're just spamming arts or prosthetics over and over I don't find it too hard to ration out Emblems over the course of a level or boss fight. And they're more fun to use creatively than just brute force spamming anyway. But agreed that the whole Emblem system is definitely flawed and could have been implemented better
@@umbek they aren't hard to farm but if you use them very often you end up spending all of your gold on buying them cuz simple killing won't compensate it. 0 - 2 from regular enemies, 2 from mid and 5 from large... if you use 3 - 5 on regular you are already going negative numbers for that run. I prefer to keep them over 800 just in case I get stuck at some boss so I don't have to go farming in the middle of trying.
And yeah, using some of the least used ones and making them useful is neat.
@@daninumbers I don't think I've ever bought Spirit Emblems at any point in all my playtime, even during this run haha
I had done a combat art only run with different rule sets (banned deflection and mikiri ,allowed use of non-damaging prosthetic like mist raven and fire work though only on non-animal enemies also had banned mortal draw for enemies other than ape, headless ape) .Was just done with LMTSR (couldn't beat Inner Selfs and Owl Father in it) ,so wanted some challenge base run .Used High Monk,Ichimongi, Whirlwind and Floating Passage mostly.
I thought about doing it without deflection but it honestly just didn't seem fun lol
My favourite one to use is actually Nightjar Slash Reversal, just because it's such a stylish way to create and close distances.
I actually love Nightjar Slash, super fun to use, but it didn't seem like it would be nearly as useful in a run where I couldn't combine it with other types of attacks
Nightjar and nightjar reversal are my favorites to use in normal gameplay just because of the distance traveling capabilities. A boss (such as Genechiro) jumps away from me after a deflection, just nightjar right into them and keep attacking. Sekiro is a game that demands aggression more so than any of the Soulsborne imo.
@@Seraphim_1172 agreed I love Nightjar Slash in normal gameplay. I find it particular strong against Owl since he has so many moves that create distance from you

25:15 come on sekiro your step-carp stuck in a wall you must help her 🤓

Good ass channel. Deflecting isn't cheating in any run since it's a core gameplay mechanic. You could restrict your challenges to excluding it, but it would remove so much that your challenge runs would turn into "can I do this today" versus "can I do this this week".
Exactly how I feel
13:46 never realized the katana ash of war in Elden Ring is the same as this combat art. Just slightly different
Correct! There's honestly a lot of stuff in Elden Ring that's similar to stuff in Sekiro
That sound effect was used for the Zerg Hatchery selection
I knew it
I started an experiment run once to see how well I could do only deflecting, and some bosses just do NOT like it when you don't fight back, Geni chief among them. He'll just get super passive and repeat kicks and shoves and grabs and it's a mess. Kinda sad, because I think he'd be fun to fight like that, if he didn't get so extremely confused by it lmao.
yeah bro i honestly don't know if it's possible to beat Genichiro in the tutorial section with only deflections. maybe if you had upgraded combat strength? i don't even know if attack power makes your deflections do more posture damage though. it doesn't seem possible
@@umbek I've tried it on his "regular" boss version in a Reflection, where I was fully leveled up, and it made absolutely no difference. If I was lucky and he gave me some sword swings I could get his posture up a little bit, but then he'd inevitably get passive and it'd just drain right back down immediately. Might give Inner Genichiro a shot, because he feels a lot more aggressive to me, but my hopes aren't high.
@@vitterling sounds about right. I actually had an idea a while ago to make a video defeating all bosses by just deflecting and it went fine on Gyoubu but my first attempt on Lady Butterfly moved so slow that I just abandoned the idea because I wasn't having fun LOL (and she's probably one of the ones you could actually win against like that, even)
@@umbek Yeah for some bosses it's easy, and like for Sword Saint and Monk actually even makes the fight more fun and different. But for some bosses it's just absolutely not doable.
One option would be to add in the umbrella deflect + follow-up for damage and bait aggression. That's how I learned you can umbrella deflect the Ape's poop and respond with a projectile follow-up clear across the arena btw. Love this game.
@@vitterling dude I really need to mess with the umbrella more I ALWAYS forget that you can actually use it for projectile attacks!!

at 28:00, for these guys u can actually take a health bar off the dude with the spear then vault over the non-aggro guy and use bloodsmoke to take out the other dude with the sword which is usually what i do since that fight is annoying lol
True, but I don't find him too tough once he's by himself :) it's just fighting two at once that's the trouble haha
If you want to make it more easy first take out the first stake of spear head from behind and then run towards the sleeping guy and kill him use the bloodsmoke and then change to puppeteir and make the other guy puppet it will make it ease

2:57 i learned that you can perform a jump kick on these shield foot soldiers and that will make them do the shield rush attack which you can dodge and get behind their back
Good tip! I never tried jump attacks on them
@umbek yes but jump off of them backwards to make some distance so when they shield rush you they don't hit you and stagger you
Great vid, great skill!

I've tried this exact challenge but quickly gave up because of how easy it is to accidentally perform a regular attack instead of an art.
It takes some getting used to for sure
This would happen to me a lot too but if you press block and then attack instead of trying to do both at the same time it makes it easier
@@verseus agreed that's basically how I do it
I had no idea this many combat arts were free or still usable at zero Spirit Emblems. Not to mention, you can just pause the game and swap them whenever. Mortal Draw is the one people use because big damage and lol what else are Emblems for, but there's absolutely other good stuff to do while you use Emblems with your Prosthetic. Heck, does the PvP meta use these? I know the game's not built for it, but some arts might be relevant.
Congratulations, you just made a lot more of Sekrio's tools feel relevant in my and others' eventual playthroughs.
Thanks! The thing is you can actually use any Combat Art with no Emblems, even Mortal Draw, it'll just be less powerful. But yes, about half of them are free to use and that includes some pretty useful ones. I have no idea about Sekiro PvP, I didn't even know it existed until earlier this year and I've never looked into it.
I’m my first ever isshin fight I figured out I could close distance by throwing a shuriken then attacking, was a game changer for me, don’t ask how I didn’t realize that
Chasing Slice is super super useful!
18:20 dam seeing how you easialy defeat corrupted monk this boss was hardest for me(the only boss i chose to abuse)
Corrupted Monk is one of my favorite bosses because once you're really comfortable with deflecting you can chain these huge combos against her and it feels so satisfying
Imagine having a mod that allows you to switch between combat skills without pausing the game by adding a second row above items like Elden Ring or just have it the same way as prosthesis mod change binded to Down button. You'd have to rebind eavesdrop though
There apparently already is a mod like this actually
Great video
Thank you!
Technically the answer is no you cant cause jumping on someone deals damage, so technically the first miniboss was unbeatable for regenerating his posture between hits means you wouldnt of beat him with combat arts or deflects alone, you dealt jump damage which was required to beat him and he lost maybe 5% hp because of it.
This comment is a small nit pick and is a joke, you did amazing
It's not necessarily an invalid complaint from people who are actually bothered by it but ultimately my main goal is to have fun, and I think following the rule of NOTHING but Combat Arts to the letter would have been a lot less fun than the way I did it, so here we are :)
I'll always be an advocate for Spiral Cloud Passage against Sword Saint. It melts through him like butter. It basically carried that fight for me on my first playthrough. It wasn't until ng+2 that I actually had to learn how to properly fight Isshin, lmao.
Eh, I don't really think it's that good overall when you factor in the Spirit Emblem cost and that most bosses can just tank through some of the hits and attack you anyway. I haven't used it much against Sword Saint though
That was a phenomenal job fr
Thank you! Got more on the way :)
Sekiro: Elden Ring Edtion
It’s unfortunate how bad floating passage is because you can get it super early but whirlwind and itchy nose are better
Also wish Ashina cross was only 1 emblem. I know it goes through block but it really doesn’t do much vit or posture for the cost
Yeah I think Spirit Emblems in general are a pretty flawed system. The game would have really benefited from the 2-flask system of Dark Souls 3 & Elden Ring imo
The shield guys at hiraata can be deflect when they shove you with the shield and will break their posture
I know that. It takes a long time to kill them just by deflecting because they don't attack very often.

I mean it's just a game design that pretty much all combat arts except few don't really make a difference, being more of flashy alternatives than upgrades. Most players are better off reacting to enemy attacks and throwing in some jabs than actually trying to use these combos.
I basically agree when it comes to Combat Arts, but a lot of the Prosthetic Tools are genuinely extremely useful and can make the game a lot more forgiving for players that are struggling if they learn how to use them. But either way I like the fact that you don't actually have to use any of the extra tools and abilities unless you want to. They're extra flavor on top of an already amazing dish if you feel like adding it
The only complaint I have with combat art is that it cost spirit.
Really that is so stupid because combat art is fun but not that powerful. Let player spam it if they want.
I think it's fair for them to cost Emblems but they should cost less for sure
when people say this game is hard it's really not if you have good reflexes when it comes to Parry then this game is easy
I fully agree and actually want to make a video about this at some point
U can for sure with the free combat arts but less likely to get to a second round cus ud b out of spirit emblems
I only ran out of Spirit Emblems once I this whole playthrough, I don't think it's that hard to use them efficiently
@@umbek yea u might b able to do a lot of posture damage if u hit them while their guards down
18:14 shouldve use mortal blade, it eats monks hp...
I mean I could have just melted through everything with Mortal Draw after getting it but that didn't seem very interesting
