- A homeless teen meets a deaf-blind man who changes his life.
FEELING THROUGH is used with permission from Doug Roland. Learn more at feelingthrough.com.
Tereek -- a young man trying hard not to reveal his lack of a home -- is desperately looking for a bed for the night, texting friends in hopes that he can crash with them. But just when something comes through, he finds himself helping out Artie, a deaf-blind man waiting for a bus home.
The encounter is anything but straightforward, not only due to their differences in abilities but also their different temperaments and ages. But as Tereek helps Artie navigate a ride home, he learns to see the world through another perspective beyond his own -- and broadening his horizons in the process.
Writer-director Doug Roland's Oscar-nominated short drama -- executive produced by Marlee Matlin and in partnership with Helen Keller Services -- is a deceptively simple narrative that takes place over one evening between two characters. But this chance encounter -- captured with visual storytelling that's both natural, unforced and still deftly crafted -- uncovers riches of empathy, along with a profound revelation about how people can offer fellowship, help and care to one another, even in the simplest of ways.
With its themes of connection and empathy, the writing is economical and precise, laying down the story and character beats with pacing and care that keeps the audience interest moving forward while allowing key moments to breathe.
The power of this kind of humanistic drama rests on the excellent performances that audiences can relate to, and the film succeeds admirably in this department. Robert Tarango -- the first deaf-blind actor to perform in a film -- plays Artie with plenty of warmth, intelligence and humor to draw in Tereek. His character is not just about the difficulty of his difference, though. His deafness and blindness enable a certain way of being in the world, one where he must trust in the world, accepts obstacles and opportunities with equanimity and enjoys the everyday pleasures and people that life gives him.
Tereek in turn learns these lessons as well, as he helps Artie with the task of getting to the right bus. Tereek's circumstances are established upfront in subtle but unmistakable ways: he has no home, and he's trying to hide this. As a result, he's guarded and rootless, and while he can joke around with friends, he's not truly carefree, since he's weighed down by anxiety about where he's going to sleep at night. Telling details capture this inner tension: he wolfs down his food while his friends leisurely nibble at it, for example.
Actor Steven Prescod's subtle yet precise performance captures Tereek's arc as a young man unmoored, looking out for himself because he has to. And that might cost him his humanity, especially when he snarls at a homeless man visibly less well-off than himself. But as he helps Artie move through the world, he takes on Artie's perspective and becomes his "brother's keeper," opening him up in both feeling and sensibility at a juncture in life where he may close himself off permanently.
Openhearted and authentic, FEELING THROUGH was inspired by the director's encounter with a deaf-blind man, which likely inspires the deep sense of tribute and affection that imbues the storytelling with its warmth and sympathy. In a world and time in history more isolated than ever, this heartfelt short has an unexpected resonance, reminding us of a simple yet profound truth that we sometimes are in danger of forgetting. We are here to help and hear one another, to feel more and see beyond ourselves. In doing so, we enlarge the scope of our lives, widen our horizons and expand our hearts. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

How lovely ☺️
And a genuine smile needs no language! XXX
The fact that he was probably holding that sign all day for someone to help him cross the street broke my heart
Holy crap you are right!..hadn’t thought of it that way, I guess that’s why Artie was thirsty
He'd been on a date and was on his way home. He hadn't been standing there all day. Remember that he probably holds that sign up several times a day every time he needs to cross if it isn't a deaf crossing.
It still was heart breaking to know that there are others in this world that must depend on the kindness of strangers and trust that the world will be safe. Makes me terribly grateful for the things like hearing and vision that I so often take for granted.
@@PapillonOne For sure. I agree. But also, remember that most people are good and want to help. The baddies are few and far between although media would have us believe otherwise. Whenever I have been in trouble, be it getting robbed abroad and being left far from home without even a penny to get there, breaking my ankle abroad again whilst alone (I love solo travel) etc etc, I have been amazed at the angels who just appeared in front of me as if by magic! :)
And I always try to do the same.

@Shane Walsh i mean i prolly got a caretaker at his house in real life
Wow..
This was a beautiful story. You keep waiting to see if Tereek will be rewarded for his kindness, but he wasn't. He hurt himself to help someone else and he knew he was doing so, but kept helping because he knew it was the right thing to do. That's how life is. Sometimes doing the right thing might cost you, but you still do it because it's the right thing to do.
Well said.
It cost Tareek, but he gained self-respect from it too. Hey may not be perfect, but he's willing to give up a place to stay for the night to help a stranger. Not many people would do that. We all like to think we'd do the same in that situation, but you never really know until you face it.

My Uncle went blind in his 60's, it was heartbreaking to watch him navigate through life as a confident black man who went from light, to darkness in months. He had unbelievable courage and resilience. I watched him fall, then get back up. Still, he maintained his dignity. He taught me so much about life as a blind person. I love and miss him sooo much. Most blind people actually dont live in darkness.. their vision usually goes just the opposite and brightness is all they see. Even at 100% blindness they wont be able to tell light from dark but still have a world where its like if you were looking at a lightbulb up close, blinded by the light.. theres only a few who live in darkness and those are onez born completely blind or have trauma..

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)
I was in Baltimore city after a car accident. My wife was in surgery in shock trauma. Almost lost her arm. I was out front of the hospital smoking a cigarette. A gentleman walked up to me and asked for change. Its Baltimore city. So certainly not uncommon. I didn't have much and my mind was elsewhere. I said I really don't have it. My wife was just in a accident....He said well " I just died" and walked away. I thought about it for literally one second and turned around to give him the 50 cents or whatever was in my pocket. He was gone. No where in site. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. I'll never forget it. Like it was yesterday. I learned a valuable lesson. And will always be left wondering what would have happened or not happened if I had just forgotten about myself and my situation for that one second and gave him the change in my pocket. Was it an angel. Was it someone that truly passed away or a homeless man with a sick sense of humor. I'll forever never know. I believe it was a spirit. My life took a horrible downward spiral for a long time after that night. I'm now clean and sober. Been married for almost 10 years. My wife didn't loose her arm. We lost our 5 month old German Shepherd puppy in the accident. You never know when you may have an angel staring right at you. Sometimes next time or another time should be that moment. Because you can't freeze time, rewind or chang the past.🙏😇

This Is One Of My Favorites Literally, I Felt Everything From Each Person And It’s Just A Beautiful Lesson Of Every Outcome . We All Have A Heart Where Some Don’t . Let’s Use It Together. See The Change In A Great Way . !!!!!!!
Talyia Lyia, I love your message :0) It's so true, some people have a swinging brick where their heart should be. But, like you say, together, I feel we CAN use it, our heart. There needs to be a contagion of love, us spreading it around, being happy to catch it - not even being selective where we put it, as long as it doesn't cause anyone to be compromised. It certainly won't kill anybody, like many other things that you can catch! Even when/ if we come across people who aren't lovely, they still, like all of us, do need to be loved. Love the fool who cut in the line, love the silly ass that dropped litter. We have to be the change we want to see. We can't expect people to care if we don't, if we aren't pushing for that change. Say to the line-cutter "hey, how would you like it, you cutting in essentially means the person at the back is missing their chance, that they've already waited for" & hope it makes them think. There's no point calling them names, if they're the kind of person that cuts in lines, calling them names will only reinforce their supposed entitlement to behave unfairly. Appealing to their better nature has a better chance, try to kill with kindness. You pick up that litter & put it in the bin, right in front of the person who dropped it, in the hope that it makes them think. Someone calls you names, say "thank you, for giving me names, you have names too" & leave it at that, try not to resort to flinging insults. It's not easy though, because when you see people being abusive to other people, a natural instinct to protect & sometimes punish can come to the fore, without another thought. In this way, I admit, I do step in & I bully the bullies. I can't stand to see someone being treated unfairly, poorly, wrongly. But I have been trying, to be more understanding of the "why" someone might be that nasty, trying to be more balanced in my responses & remembering what mother said, "two wrongs don't make a right".
Being an angel doesn't require much; just some compassion.
@desire123ifcation well said 🙏

This really brought up a lot for me. The lowest points in my life were when I felt that I had nothing to give to somebody else. The young man may have felt that way at first, but being able to help first one guy, then give another guy what little money he had might have helped him more than just having a place for the night. Another experience was when I was dating a deaf girl and a guy in a wheelchair needed help in the bathroom, so of course that meant me. Later that night my friend said that she felt sorry for that guy because he couldn't get on a bus alone or even go to the bathroom without help. In the bathroom he told me that he felt sorry for my friend because she'd never hear Beethoven. Funny how each of them saw the other as the person with the "real" disability, while they themselves only had inconveniences.

That said, I'm eternally grateful that I don't have either condition - I certainly don't think that deafness would be easy to deal with.
As I understand, (and I could be wrong in assuming this) people who've lost one of their senses can possibly develop other senses to compensate for the loss, so to lose two must be horrendous.

Nothing is more touching then the gesture of unconditional kindness and empathy from a stranger. It always brings me to tears. It's like a miracle you witness and the sensation in your heart tells its worth living. Miracle called pure love
“You’ll be ok.” The theme for all of us in 2021.
Yes, that is nice! I think it would be nice to say "I will be okay" every now and then. It would be comforting esp when we are down. Thanks! Very touching short film.
But will we really?
We will be alright with God on our side
This comment made me cry
I agree except, sadly, there are people in power who don't feel or care to feel the way we do. Look out for these people, for they want to take our freedoms. Freedoms to just be kind.
I broke at, " he just wants to get home "... don't we all..
The irony of it is that Tareek has no home. He off all people knows what it like to want to get home. He yearns for it.
Oof right in the feels :(

@@Heart2HeartBooks I'm in my late 40s and still can't find home!
does he wants to get home or was he looking for love? life....I broke when that woman looked at him deep in his soul
Beautifully depicted, "NOTHING IS FREE. EVERYONE, EVERYTHING COUNTS". Thank You.
To all the kids facing this reality right now I hope you find the help you deserve, I feel your pain and it does get better eventually
It’s crazy but when Artie told him Tereek he’ll be ok and gave him a hug I literally felt the hug . This is beautiful
I too felt the same
I felt like Tereek, through his humanity, just helped Artie get home, but Artie may have changed Tereek's whole life by helping him see the world in a different way. So in the end Tereek got the most help.
All beautiful posts above...
You are right. Tereek got help too. To make an effort, and change his life

Lord, help me to pass my test today.
“Literally”???????? No u didn’t
Artie, despite being both deaf and blind, is going out on a date. He stills keeps smiling. He doesn't let that weigh him down. I am so proud.
I don't mean to hurt ur heart even more like mine, but he had already been on the date he had asked to kiss her and she presumably said no so then he asked her to leave the room for a minute ( so he could cry to himself) and yet he still kept a smile on his face
Yes, in the midst of adversity, we just pull ourselves up and venture onward. Never give up
@@Daddy_Dacota wow I didn’t even notice that, ur smart
@@Daddy_Dacota Far more likely that part asking them to leave the room and close the door was him being guided to a restroom.
@@a.parkerrollofson2548 Come on... Really?
You think that's what the writer was going for? A useless scene, to fill space, providing random information with no story being told?
I cried as soon as he linked up with his homies at the arcade.
Great comments! I too cried from the affirmation from the woman on the bus...and then when Artie told Tareek "YOULL BE OK!"
BEAUTIFUL STORY!
When you think things are bad, remember Artie.

Spectacular! This short film is a masterpiece in film. Thank you.
I'm a blind and deaf person and I found this movie to really emotional and relatable. Glad there's someone who thought about us and brought something like this to life. Even the acting and background score were great.
i'm deaf, and i've been homeless before. this hit me in a way i wasn't expecting. you make an impact on people you come across no matter how small you think it may be. kindness goes a really long way, and people aren't as quick to forget.
I always found people like you very inspiring, especially when i look up at my ,,problems,, and realising how blessed I am for the life I have, with all the problems I have

People don’t forget kindness; especially if it’s the compassionate kind bcz it makes peeps feel they are not alone.
I can't even begin to understand how Artie lives his life without someone to support him

This is a gem of a short story. Just ride the tide of kindness, simplicity, living in the moment, being willing to open yourself up and experience your neighbor's reality. Much thanks.
after watching this video about a year ago this keeps coming back up in the back of my head from time to time because of how emotional and changing this is. What an amazing story. I wish there was part 2 to this to see how the kid grows up and finds him again.
I know I watched it a while ago and it come back up in my feed. I always watch it again.

Goes to show...you don't need millions of dollars or famous actor's to achieve great movies. This short provided more in depth meaning and emotion than full length movie. You just need great performers and great directing.
Absolutely this was truly touching and incredibly brought to the heart
True words. That’s why I love European movies. The actors aren’t always as pretty or handsome as Americans and the budgets are usually much smaller, but the writing and the direction are almost always better with much more meaningful and thought-provoking story lines.
Facts
This is a deeply moving film. Our world needs more of this type of production saturating the streaming channels. The simplest gestures are the most profound oftentimes. The beauty of the blind man's vulnerability impacting the teen was immensely heartwarming. Thank you! ♥️
This is what life is all about. The universe doesn't care about you're accomplishments, only you're heart. ❤
The level of trust required for the blind and or the deaf to survive. That's truly something.

This is one of the most heart warming short movies ever made, I had zero idea it was going to be that impressive. Congratulations on the amazing work from everyone behind the scenes.
I just watched it with my girlfriend and it both made us cry. This short, feeling through,is so much moving. The internet should exist mainly for content like this.
Three lessons I picked here:
1. Stop being busy all the time and look around you. Your little effort could make someone's day!
2. Share your life. You don't need to be a millionaire to help others.
3. _You're neither blind nor deaf._ You're more than capable. Let go of your excuses!
*PS: The third point is talking to me of the excuses and imaginary limitations I always set for myself. It's telling me that there are people breaking barriers, achieving much more with the little they have (or been given).*
*_Play the cards that you're dealt, and stop putting yourself in a box because perfection is a myth!_*
People who are deaf watching with subtitles: am I a joke too you?
Blind people unable to see the comment...
I rarely look at my device when riding the subway. I prefer observing the other riders, 98% of whom are staring at their phones. I construct stories about them based on their appearance. It's often a lesson in how not to be judgemental, but mostly it's the people who are dressed up like they're playing a character in a movie that is the most challenging. In the end, I'm just happy and grateful for the individual that I am and the life that I have.
A good summary.
Score : A+.
4. Deaf and blind is more than physical.
There's power in kindness and treating people with dignity.
You are SO right. It leads to respect for all.
Compassion is everything without it your nothing
wow you discovered fire...
Some people exploit kindness as a weakness. Sad but true. That doesn’t stop me from being kind and treating people with respect but I do watch out for those who thrive of others by being negative
@@randyspencer5937 - Politicians like Joe Biden are nothing then.
Watched this for the 2nd time. I just realized that what if Artie knew he had his bottled water inside his bag all along. Maybe he felt like Tareek was hungry, and he knew that Tareek would need some money, and used it as a chance to let him get some money in his wallet. The complete trust Artie gave Tareek and everyone around him, and also his constant smile despite of things happening around him. I am amazed.
That was a tear jerker. Thank you Mr. Roland and company.

I just realizes how blind I am in my everyday life. So self involved
Exactly the same, and thus we don't see the problems of our close ones sometimes even though they are screaming for help in emotional space.
I think when that realization hits, it hurts us deeply. At least for me.
So true
I love storytelling like this. It doesn't underestimate the viewer, it conveys perfectly emotion without shoving it in our face, and it is very human in it subtle moral takeaway. Thank you!
