The 1 issue I had with Southgate at the world cup was his lack and unwillingness to use the squad he had better. Many times in the cup especially towards the later stages were we played more extra time etc he needed to use his subs better and he neglected to do so for whatever reason in have No idea. There were games were Vardys pace would have been more beneficial than what Kane could offer for that particular game but he always stick with Kane. This is not me saying Kane is trash but rather Gareth should have recognised he had TWO class strikers with dymamite finishing and not just one.

He still have something to offer but realistically he won't be going to the next world cup, Kane is the undisputed #1 striker and plays a similar style of football as well... Like Gary Cahill... it's more getting out of the way for the next generation, rather than being "selfish" and retiring.

David Andromeda Football began as a club game, not an international game. Club has and always will come first. This is a debate in itself, some fans would rather see their team win a League Cup than see their nation win a World Cup. Hell, I’d rather win a charity shield.

Perspective.... Vardy isn't getting any younger, though has managed to make the England team. His game is largely built around his pace, but his career isn't going to last very long at his age if his hamstring was to break due to over playing. To keep his career going for as long as possible then retiring "early" from England isn't a bad move. Remember, this guy didn't earn £80k per week from the age of 17 years.... he has had to do it the hard way and I wouldn't blame him if his aim is to increase his playing time by a year or two by getting some rest whilst others are pushing themselves potentially too far.
