This song is a single for my upcoming Masks - EP releasing October 25th!
The Dark Souls games keep sucking me back in.
"Song of the Abyss" is a tragic tale of loyalty and inevitable defeat, following the story of Knight Artorias and his great wolf Sif. Once the greatest warrior in the known world, Artorias fails his final mission to stop the spread of the Abyss, falling to its influence and leaving his wolf safely behind under his enchanted shield. Of course we, the player, later find Sif and carry on the legacy of the Wolf Knight despite his defeat.

    Lyrics:
    Old friend, we seem surrounded
    As decay is closing in
And the kiss of deadly silence
Has been placed upon my skin
For the code we're bound to follow
You have led my last crusade
Now we're swallowed by the city
    As it fades
I will shield you from the darkness
When the walls around us quake
I will hold back all the monsters
Until my bones begin to break
When I've lost I'll have to leave you
And the tears, they'll fall like rain
If I'm taken by the shadows
I will spare you from the pain
    Cry a requiem for sunlight
Hide away now from the dark
To me the angered deep is calling
    Tearing me apart
Somehow the whispers do command me
When the abyss has taken hold
    Now carry on in glory
    When I grow cold
I will shield you from the darkness
When the walls around us quake
I will hold back all the monsters
Until my bones begin to break
When I've lost I'll have to leave you
And the tears, they'll fall like rain
If I'm taken by the shadows
I will spare you from the pain
Foolishly I left the darkness creeping
In this restless ruin my soul is bleeding
I confess to you the dark
    Has taken me prisoner
I am corrupt beyond any rescue
I've forsaken my vow to protect you
    Oh, end these horrors
Face the father of the sinister
    If the fight's over
    I will sacrifice my mind
Just to know you'll still be breathing
When the years have been unkind
    So continue on without me
Guard my body and my flame
Keep a watch over the wasteland
When the world forgets my name
I will shield you from the darkness
When the walls around us quake
I will hold back all the monsters
Until my bones begin to break
When I've lost I'll have to leave you
And the tears, they'll fall like rain
If I'm taken by the shadows
I will spare you from the pain

Artorias and the Ivory King are absolute legends.
One fought his way into the Abyss to try and kill Manus, the father of the Abyss.
The other built his throne on top of what was effectively the gate to hell to make sure nothing gets out of it, and when he felt himself starting to die, decided to jump in and see if he couldn't kill it once and for all.

I've always loved the story of Artorias and Sif because it's such a well done tragedy. The two of them are the best hope against the Abyss so they're sent to confront it, and when they're overrun, Artorias protects Sif with the last bit of his sanity. When the Chosen Undead rescues Sif, Sif helps CU fulfill Artorias's quest to stop the Abyss then Sif begins an eternal vigil to guard both Artorias's grave and the secrets to the Abyss. A long time passes, maybe centuries, and Sif still keeps the vigil, when someone disturbs Artorias's grave. Sif knows the smell, and understands what's happening. He's lost one companion to the Abyss, and he's seen what it does to even the strongest willed people. He can't let it happen again. As much as it hurts, they both know what has to be done. For their friends and for the fallen. Maybe somewhere, in another life, in another time, they could have avoided it. But not this place. Not this time. There could be no compromise between the two former companions

Y'know what makes it even sadder?
Frampt himself said that he's been looking for 1000 years for a successor to Gwyn, meaning an entire age is about a millennium. When artorias was sent to oolacile, he was under the command of Gwyn during his reign just before it began to fall, which means sif was waiting for around 1 and a half thousand years until he met you again. 1500 years not knowing who helped you, where they went or if they're still alive only to finlly come across them once again having to face them

      @Rebellions Před 4 lety +174

Even worse when you consider this, We technically havent helped Sif at this point yet. He knows who we are and is trying to protect US from meeting Artorias's fate. But WE do not know who HE is at this point.
So Sif lost one companion and, to his mind, was betrayed by another.

Names of every great hero fade in the memories throughout years. Like mentioned here, Artorias is completly forgotten in DS3 and Gwyn is never directly mentioned. Ivory King is another example. Yes, he was in the DLC and not the main game, but he sacrificed himself to protect his queen and kingdom. Yet, in DS3 there's nothing about him. Dark Souls 2 is concidered by many the worst of the 3 games, but DS3 feels so...empty at moments. Some bosses feel rushed or don't bring anything to the story.

@@desukyatchashinigami744 I got the same feeling from DS3. It lacked that melancholic tone about it which gaves us a bittersweet sense of loss and fernweh.
It think it's due to the lack of music that evokes these feelings, like DS1' Firelink Shrine and Majula's. Also the lack of inviting greenery overtaking the place, it gives us an underlying sense that time is moving on, leaving things behind w/o proper respects or care and yet it feels innofensive and alive. In DS3 most of it looks sick and implies the place is hostile.

Or it could both: Sif is telling you same thing that Artorias told her/him so you remember what has happened to Artorias so you will understand why she/he can't let you, and there is no ill will in that because one death doesn't mean much for undead (how else would you surived all thore years if you were not udead? humans are fragile in DS). Our brains make the darksousl for us as for me I like the idea that sif is loyal so much the wolf you find may just be a physical manifestation of him but his soul watches over the grave of atorus or well the complex that it is now as you the chosen hollow in the first game save from being remembered as a failure. And thus he was found dead and buried with honor. Over the endless cycles sif still serves even if the world fergets the Knight and his one true companion. Sif will never forget his master nor the hollow who saved him from a fate worse than his overdue death. And sometimes I like to dwell on this as a thing where I bring the last of the embers into modern world and out of some last spark of humanity atorius has I usually allow sif to move on from the grave watching task for he died in a moment of purity thus when I do get his soul in ds 1 I'm gonna make the true sward and sheild because, it's only right to use the blade made to kill the darkness and in ds3 I'm gonna be using the old gear once more for I honor sig more than the watchers who followed his stride. Because just like atorius they too fell from the hevans. Driven by the darkness, so in connection to the abyss all who fight it dall to it except a beast. Our great grey wolf sif. He never faltered at all. And with the age fo the gods all well past. I see his unending watching being rewarded in the time in the ehvans where atorus is brought from the void to be at his pups side for the time eternal no longer does either have to bow to a tyrant King and fight a war that's only gonna end in a loss.

The rogue had a lost brother who was taken by a group of fanatics at a young age and moulded into essentially an evil paladin and was tasked with tracker her down for a sin she'd committed. The fight started going poorly and he dropped her when he thought he couldn't save her. He then realized what he'd done, and saw the rest of her party frantically trying to protect her and save her, and he snapped out of it, told them all to run, and then turned on his former comrades and bought them some time to escape. I imagine something like the theme of this song was the message he tried to impart when they fled.

      @sancturillore Před 4 lety +43

That's not a fact, that's a hypothesis. All we know is that his left arm is broken. We don't know how it was broken, and your explanation for it is more fanfic than lore.
I do however agree that it's a nice and interesting way to look at it.
In Dark Souls, the normal player and npc models are all right-handed (for simplicity's sake), meaning that they hold their main weapon in their right hand and their shield in the left hand. Artorias is also depicted in all materials (even those with his left arm not broken) as holding his sword in his right hand, so he's likely right handed too, and that's the reason he holds his shield in his left arm.
Also, I seem to recall that Artorias didn't break his arm protecting Sif, but rather while fighting Manus without his shield after having left his shield with Sif. It's fully possible that I'm miss-remembering this detail. Maybe he broke his arm while shielding Sif from Manus, and then retreated with Sif, left his shield with Sif, and then went back to fight Manus alone while his left arm was still broken.
Regardless, his left arm is still no his stronger arm. He's not left-handed.
(Though I do agree that it would be baddess and tragic as heck if he was left-handed, since that would back up him defending Sif with the sheild while using his stronger arm for it, but it would also mean that the Artorias boss that we fight is using his weaker arm with his sword when fighting us.)
Edit: If the North American cover for Dark Souls 1(before the DLC was a thing) is the reason you believe Artorias to be left-handed, then please go watch Silver Mont's video on the topic. The video in question is called "Is Artorias on the cover of Dark Souls?" and was uploaded in 2013. The answer is that no, that isn't Artorias on the cover.

@@coren5911 Okay, I just looked it up.
In the first Dark Souls game, all 3 versions of Artorias' sword didn't have that condition (Greatsword of Artorias and Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed), both from Sif's Soul, as well as the Abyss Greatsword from Artorias' abyss corrupted soul).
The same thing applies for Dark Souls 3, in which the moveset isn't limited by it being left or right handed.
The need to used the sword with the left hand to be able to have the Abyss Greatsword (and Greatsword of Artorias) moveset from DS1 is only for the Majestic Greatsword in Dark Souls 2.
Interestingly, here's what the Majestic Greatsword description says:
"An ancient greatsword of unknown origin.
This sword was passed down through generations, until it reached Gordin, wandering knight of Forossa, and was lost upon his death.
Uncannily, every last one of the prominent swordsmen who inherited this weapon was left-handed."
While that could be viewed as an indicator of Artorias having been left-handed, a few things in-game and outside of the game should be taken into consideration, so let's take this info with a grain of salt.
1- Artorias' name has already been forgotten by the time of DS2. There's nothing proving that he was actually left-handed. He might have been, and that would be quite epic, as we've both established in our previous comments, but this still isn't a complete confirmation.
2- The requirement isn't there in DS3(both for the Wolf sword and for the Abyss Watcher sword).
3- The Abyss Watchers, the ones closest to the actual wolf style of Artorias (as opposed to the ones who simply tried to copy his style while using a similar sword, such as in the case of the DS2 Majestic Greatsword) all use it in their right hand. In their cases, they use a dagger in the left hand due to them refusing to use a shield (likely a dilution of the info on what actually happened, with them misunderstanding the lack of a shield as a choice, or maybe they just adopted that style to go even more in-depth with the wolf style, or maybe it's just that they are Undead so they don't care, or a mix of the 3).
4- Miyazaki didn't have much role in making DS2, so maybe the left-hand thing was just the interpretation of the guy who directed the making of DS2.
As such, while I'd personally love for Artorias to have been left-handed, I'm not confident with it being actually true or not.

YESS finally another amazing dark souls Aviators video!!
You know this video made me think about why I love Artorias. Not just because of his amazing boss fight nor his cool character design. It’s because he is a true hero. Although the word “hero” has a blurry meaning and everyone can imagine what a hero is but what defines a hero? Many things really, but what I truly believe what is the most important aspect of a true hero is the influence they have on others. Knight Artorias, the legendary abysswalker even after his death, even after his name is long forgotten his heroism has inspired so many to continue his work fighting the dark even inspiring an entire legion of abyss watchers to continue battling the dark and all the horrors that dwell within it. A hero no matter the magnificence will eventually be forgotten by the ages of time but the heroism and deeds of that person will always be remembered by those who were inspired by them and strive to continue their purpose, for a purpose can easily long outlive the one who created it.

Despite never having the chance to play anything in the Soulsborne series except Dark Souls 3, I have quickly grown to watching people like SquillaKilla., and loving Dark Souls fan-music. It makes me ecstatic to see continued growth and support of both the Soulsborne community, and this channel. Now all I wish for in life is more Portal...
December 2022 Edit; I wrote this comment about 3 years ago, and right now it is a week to Christmas. Since then, I've played each of the Dark Souls through to completion, a solid chunk of Sekiro, and have started to get into Elden Ring. The past ~3 years has been a wild experience, and Aviators has been a big factor in my interest. The emotional songs have really pushed me to become invested in the Soulsborne series and its lore. Before this comment, I never had only briefly played DS3. Now, it sits in my Top 10 of all-time video games by playtime, even compared to games I had played for over a decade longer and have played since then. It's astonishing just how great of a series this is, and I hope that there's plenty more in store in the Soulsborne franchise, be it through Elden Ring's likely inevitable DLC, or some new FromSoftware game.

Yet even as he gives his everything to stave off the darkness of the Abyss, even falling to its control, he bears in mind not his duty but the closest companion he had. Some can find happiness in calmness of death (Like Manus tried to. To sleep in peace). Others search for the light. Even others in a place of forlorn. And remember that happiness can be achieved in form of the journey to it.

Dark Souls' world is a bleak, sad place, where tragedy befalls even to the most beautiful friendship stories. Stories that carry through time and space such as this one or the Ivory King's.
Yet, however dark it may be, even as the fire dwindles to almost extinction, there is still flame flickering, a dim light giving hope that things may yet change. In this case, that light takes the form of an undead putting to rest a brave but doomed knight and, later on, his old, tired and always loyal companion.
May the flames guide thee, Abysswalker. And may the sun shine upon him and the Great Grey Wolf.

This is so good! Just my style of music.
On the topic of songs based on FromSoft characters, do we have one based on Henryk yet? Despite a lack of clarity on his life, we know that he lived it tragically long. Imagine how many hunts he'd taken part in, and just how much bloodshed he has seen.
Holding back his urge of bloodlust even during his time in the Confederatecy. He finally snaps when he discovers that Yharnam has fallen to the Plague again and his best friend has lost himself to the beast within.
I think Henryk would make a perfect Aviators song.

    • @e.w.6936
      @e.w.6936 Před 4 lety +4

It's very unlikely Henryk is somehow related to either Viola or Gascoigne. It's just a weirdly popular fan theory without basis. Henryk is black and Viola and Gascoigne are white. Technically it's not impossible for a black man to have a very pale daughter because genetics can be wild. But if From Software intended any blood relation they sure as hell wouldn't show it with such an unlikely case.
On the other hand that implies a completely different part of Henryk's history. Yharnamites all seem to be white and they're very xenophobic, so it stands to reason Henryk didn't have it easy with the locals.

I think in Japan it's common for children to call older people "uncle", "grandma" or the like even if you're not blood related. I guess this could be unintentional from From Software? However I would think something like "granny" could also pass as just an endearing title/name for an unrelated older lady in English, but I'm not a native speaker.
Regardless it's never specified that she's even thinking of Henryk. There just aren't many named old men besides him. The grandad could just be an unnamed guy we never see.
