I feel like maybe this is an unsurprising choice of character to write about. In fact, I've been so torn up about the fact that I HAVEN'T written about Elden Ring's tribute to Guts that I just got up one day and named a whole upcoming EP after him. Inspired by the game's Ranni questline once again, "Halfwolf" is a farewell ballad from Blaidd as he realizes his fate; that his ties to the Golden Order would eventually cause him to betray his friends, no matter how much he loved them. He fought with them every step of the way, and even aided Ranni the Witch in her victory knowing her success would bring conflict and punishment for him. This song is Blaidd's declaration of love and loyalty to his adopted sister, as his own soul breaks within him.

If I had a nickel for every time Aviators made me cry with a song about a tragic From Software hero and their loyal sword-wielding wolf companion, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

I don’t even know these stories but reading the comments and connecting them to his song made me lose it 😭
At the end, when you have to fight Blaidd, he is fighting still. Right up until he sees you. He knows your strength, and he knows that he can let go. when he attacks you, he knows that you can kill him, and he trusts that you will. It wasn't that he finally lost the fight against himself, but that he chose to let it win so you could kill it.
This makes that part so much sadder.

My daughter was listening to this song during her fight with Blaidd. She debated just tp'ing out cause she didn't want to kill him but finally did when I said you'd be putting him out of his misery from the madness of conflicting desires.

Perhaps not intended to be, but this is a beautiful companion piece to Miracle of Sound's Moonlight Blue. Moonlight Blue is Ranni saying goodbye to Blaidd after all they've been through, and Half Wolf is Blaidd urging her onwards, towards their shared goal.

@@Victor-056 Yet they kept forward. They endured because the struggle was worth it. Losing purpose made characters hollow, and yet, they kept on going on for as long as they could, because they believed what they did was worth the effort, and none is a better testament of it in the series than Blaidd himself, going against everything he was taught and programmed to do, defy the gods even, just to be with the one that they devoted their life to and help them achieve that goal. The end might be sad, but if the struggle was worth it, maybe the journey wasn't so bad, maybe it hurts because it was worth it and it came to an end.

In today's segment of "What made me cry", I present you...this.
I have to say, this song hit me so much differently than I could have imagined. While I listen and love almost every song y'all come out with, this one takes the cake for messing me up.
I've a degenerative disease that's coming near a turning point where it will take my mind and my body, and I have to admit that sometimes it's hard. I have sometimes pushed people away, not thinking they'll be strong enough for the rough times before my passing. I feel horrible for even having connections, because I know the burdens that will weigh on each person. But there are few that I find I wish to be selfish with. That I want close, that I need. We talk openly and honestly about my deterioration, and the times when they'd need to say their goodbyes before I do. I'm 11 years progressed with early onset Huntington's disease, and I've got a good 5-8 left. Maybe.
So this song hits hard, it hurts. It also feels good that I might one day find the words to leave people with when my mind is gone, before I am. This is something I face every day, and it isn't easy. I'd not wish this on anyone. I don't know, I'm ramblings and emotional. Just, thank you all. You gave me something today that I didn't know I needed.

@@laughingfox931 It's something that people with terminal issues have to come to terms with and face. For me? It was different. I only found out at the end of 2020, even though I was fighting for years to find out what was wrong. I knew something was wrong. I KNEW it. So finding out, it was freeing. I wasn't crazy, even though I was told something close. I my fears were alleviated, and I was finally able to know that all those years it wasn't all just in my head. Well, it was, just not in that way! lol!!

Your condition is sad, heart breaking, and truly awful to deal with. I wish I could say more, but know that those of us that have seen your words, will continue through the world, one after the other, carrying a part of you with us. I love this. Especially the chorus changing at the end from "Know me for what I am, Half wolf and half afraid" to "Remember who I was, Half wolf, forever yours". From Software sure has a talent for writing tragic characters, and between this, Song of the Abyss, Requiem for The King and well, most of your soulsborne songs, it's clear you have a talent for presenting these stories in music.

You know it's a good song when it's about a character from a video game you've never played and know almost nothing about, and you can't stop listening to it. Beautiful as usual.
If you're curious, the short-ish explanation goes like this
An (arguably malevolent) god called the Greater Will created beast servants for a lot of the most powerful people in the Lands Between, but they were really more of handlers intended to keep them under the Greater Will's control. Blaidd was one of those, for a demigod named Ranni.
Ranni later turned against the Greater Will and sought to create a world where mortals would be free to choose their own destinies, and Blaidd chose to remain loyal to her even though his soul was hardwired to serve the Greater Will and eventually allowed another of her allies to imprison him so he couldn't pose a threat to her when he lost control.

Played through the game seven times and yet every time seeing what happens to Blaidd still hits me in the feels just like the first time I saw it. Incredible Blaidd song Aviators really embodied the story of his character have a great day

This song really encapsulates what Blaidd is all about. That despite his tough looking appearance, he is your friend after all no matter the circumstances. And unlike Sif, he is forced to fight you for things beyond his control once you finish Ranni's long quest.
Blaidd truly deserved better, and it really saddens me how his story ends, at your hand
"I refuse to drag you down" my headcanon is that Blaidd finally loses control when he sees us, because he believes we will kill him, so he will never harm Ranni. Beautiful song bro.
It's crazy how well this entire situation (and song) can translate into our own, mundane lifes. I'm absolutely certain there's a good few among you who have had to deal with this exact issue as well - Having to step away from someone you love deeply for their sake, because you're wishing them nothing but the best and you're not that.

Edit: It's also pretty poetic how the line changes from "Know me for WHAT I am" to "Remember WHO I was".
It changes from being half a wolf (as in 50% wolf nature/genetics) and afraid of that, to being "Half Wolf" (as a name or title) and being forever loyal of their friend.
Seriously man, when you changed that last line in the last chorus to "forever yours" I instantly got tears in my eyes.

I found this song a day after it came out. That day was my Dad's birthday. He passed away years ago. I'm not fishing for sympathy, but I do find the timing so impeccable. This song is so hauntingly beautiful while retaining the tragicness of Blaidd's story and his fate. I can't do a playthrough of Elden Ring without completing Ranni's quest, but I'm never ready for the end of Blaidd's. This song brought me to tears as I remembered and honored not only Blaidd but my father as well. At the end, the line "Have Faith. I'm still with you" always pulls my heart strings because it made me feel like my father is watching me. Thank you Aviators for another wonderful song.

Honestly didn't expect a song about Blaidd to be this chill. I expected more screaming, and depression. But this? It puts a smile on my face.
"When the voices, make my choices" feels like a callback to Song of the Abyss, and I'm definitely noticing some of the melodies used in Wolves, and possibly Friendship? Start of the chorus distantly reminds me of Have Faith. All in all, loved it! Definitely gonna be one I repeatedly listen to again!
Truly a song deserving for the bestest boy in Elden Ring. It really captures the esence of the tragedy of Blaidd's story. Not gonna lie, as much as I hate to admit it, this really made me cry. The "Remember who I was, half-wolf, forever yours", after the whole song being "half-wolf and half afraid" was so heart-warming and sweet, despite what it means in the story.
I am in actual tears. That was gorgeous. Everything; the lyrics, the chords of the music, that elegant voice balancing between sorrow and relief, the excellent video editing.

The melody of the song sounds inspired by Imagine Dragon's "Demons", while also carrying aspects of Aviator's "They'll never find us".

First off, excellent song. It really captures Blaidd's eternal struggle and endless devotion to the Age of Stars.
I know a lot of people made comparsions between Siegward and Alexander, but this song made realize the comparisons between Blaidd and Gael. Both tragic figures serving their mistresses for a cause they see as noble.

I can't believe I am just finding this masterpiece. The algorithm has failed me. Aviators, you blew this one out of the park. From the visuals of seeing Blaidd with Ranni to the lyrics really holding to what this determined character was really about, I am just... in tears for the best of reasons. This song was right on the money with what I imagine Blaidd was thinking this entire time. Knowing from the start that he would eventually betray his most important person through no fault of his own. To fighting the urge day in and day out while risking his life to see her will done.
Blaidd really is best boy... Ranni's heartbroken dialogue tells us everything we need to know about how close these two were. And for him to place his trust in us, to become her new protector... If you can't tell, this story has really touched me. Thank you for this amazing song!

I'm gonna be honest. At "forever yours" i started crying. It's so sad that such a good person has to suffer this much without a way out.
Words can't express how much I love this song, but listening to it is hard. It invokes feelings stronger than any other song I've heard in what feels like must be years, and they're feelings I would rather not feel. But it's a beautiful song, so I'm just gonna keep feeling them whenever the song comes up in a playlist

recently finished Ranni's questline, and the knowledge that despite going mad from his nature and the Influence of something greater he still returned to Ranni's Rise to protect someone who is no longer there is both incredibly impressive and even more depressing. I like how weirdly upbeat this song it, Blaidd knew exactly what would happen when he did what he did and didn't care a bit.
In a way, Blaidd makes the same choice as the Wolf in Sekiro. Owl might have just been some asshole unable to do more than bad parenting rather than a full eldritch horror able to create life and define its instincts, but ultimately both tasked their creations to serve a good person and then thought they could revoke that command and be obeyed.
I’ve recently been listening to your music a lot more lately. Your songs place a sort of nostalgic feeling in me, even the newer ones! They give me the feeling of home, especially this one. This song brings tears to my eyes. It’s very beautiful and sends chills down my arms!

This song did something i didn't think possible.
My first play i went with rani's end and her callous indifference to the fate of her vassals made me hate her. Especially when she Knew what the two fingers would do to Blaidd to try and stop her. She never even tried to save him, when a way existed in the unalloyed gold needle. He endured so much for her sake and in the end she didn't even offer him an explanation.
But i hadn't considered events from his perspective.
What if he knew already and had accepted it? He seems the sort not to ask anything for himself. To be the one to throw himself in front of a blade meant for her without a second thought. To give his life to help her ascend, even if he didn't live to witness her apotheosis. He fought to the end for her, killing that traitorous bastard sorcerer and the assassins sent for him. All while what made him the man he was was chipped away at by a force greater than any other. He held out for her. Manning the rear guard till his last breath to make sure none would follow after. A noble end to be sure.
I may not be ready to forgive her, but I'm done hating her.
How gold needle could save him?
@@shrekkek9396 the unalloyed gold needle blocks the influence of the Greater Wills.
We see this in action with the three fingers, as interacting with them turns your eyes bright yellow with madness and locks you into the Frenzied Flame ending.
But, insert the needle into yourself and your eyes go back to normal and you're free to choose any ending you wish. Signifying that your mind is once again your own and that the Greater Wills cannot dominate you.
There is no option to do so in game, but in theory there is no reason why this could not be used to sever the two fingers hold on Blaidd and prevent them from turning him into a weapon against Ranni.
@@shrekkek9396 it blocks the influence of the Greater Wills. Ie, two fingers or three fingers. It's the only way to get out of the frenzied flame ending if you've beheld the three fingers and fallen victim to the madness they inflict.
If it could do that then it could have blocked, if not fully severed the connection between blaidd and the two fingers.
@@laughingfox931 you're wrong. Three fingers has nothing to do with the Greater Will. Needle counters outher gods which are anything that IS NOT greater will.
And additionally theres no reason for it to works since cases are completely different. In Malenia's case (which the need was originally created for) and your characters case (which it can be used in the game) we have cases of a god manifesting through its avatar. Malenia was possessed by the God of rot, you're possessed by Three Fingers. There's a connection to sever. Blaidd case is a different matter.

the fingers in twos and threes, are the instruments of the Greater Will, it flows through them. It's frequently said as if there is only one Greater Will, but from the few people who know, they say "Greater Wills" meaning it is not just one entity, but several.
Blaidd was created by Ranis two fingers as her Shadow, he is intimately connected to them. But, he formed a near equality powerful connection with Rani after she killed her empyrion (sp?) Flesh and stuck her soul in the doll we meet. He drove a wedge between the Two fingers, The Greater Will and himself by embracing Rani and swearing himself to her and only her. His greatsword coated itself in frost as he did, signifying it was no mere oath given, but a sign of their bond. That's how he was able to hold on so long against the Greater Will bearing down on him. But eventually they couldn't hold it back and Blaidds mind was crushed, allowing the Greater Will, through Rani's Two Fingers to posess him.
It is exactly the same as the two examples you gave.
I love this! I got Elden Ring last December to see what the hype was all about. This was my first "Souls" game and it was my favorite experience in gaming for a while. Seeing your other Souls songs has inspired me to go back and play the rest of the series. This series is beautiful, and your songs are the equally as beautiful. Phenomenal stuff! P.S Blaidd is the best boy.
