Underhill and Martini was a wonderful pair and so are these two.
Torville and Dean will always be icons in this sport. Tessa and Scott will be just as memorable. Legends both, in a different time.
No one will ever be a wonderful has Torville and Dean ever. And they're still going strong after 40 years of winning gold in Sarajevo.
When were you born? There were Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov who were the first Olympic champions in 1970 in ice dance and before Pakhomova and Gorshkov the great champions were Diane Towler and Bernard Ford, but there was no Olympic competitions in ice dance then. Torville and Dean managed to break Soviet winning record for 35 years in ice dance. This is why they were famous.
I think it is sad that their has to be this better than that kind of thing going on. Virtue and Moir are absolutely amazing!! They are the legend of their time, just like Torvil and Dean were of theirs. And in the future there may be another couple that is the best for their particular time. But they all are the greatest in their own way, their own time, their own circumstance. This gorgeous video shows that in spades. I love them ALL.

They really were the best, T & D set new standards and displayed new emotive partnering.
Actually, Tracy Wilson did not forget Torvill and Dean. She actually said that she thought VM had surpassed them. Personally I think they are just different styles. TM are the equivalent to Gene Kelly and Cid Charisse: balletic and sexy. TD are the equivalent to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers: elegant and mischievous. I slightly prefer TM. But I surely appreciate and enjoy TD's routines.
Torvill and Dean are the recipients of that title.
Marina Annisina and Gwendal Peizarot (sp?) were also great. They may not have won as much as T&D, but they were outstanding!
Might place them tied at the top for greatest with "Torville and Dean"! Saw them in Victoria in 1987; what impressed me was that I could hear the blades on the ice of the lesser performers, but when T&D skated by me, there was NO sound of blades on ice! THAT is perfection! Have not had opportunity to see/hear Virtue and Moir in person, so can't compare the two pairs.
This couple is definitely my pick for best ice dancing team of all time! Unforgetable VIRTUE MOIR duo!!!!

Ever heard of T & D just about to retire 40 years after winning at 1984 Olympics - some persons have short memories. Yes, this couple is brilliant - but consider another is Ludmilla & Oleg Protopopov (Olympic Gold 1964 & 1968 as well as World Pro Pairs)

They are in that elite group that will have a place in history. "Bolero" (Torvill & Dean) - 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo is my all time favorite team in terms of when they came along and how they changed the sport.

@@virtuemoir22 They changed ice dance for good. It was rather stodgy before them. I was being scouted as a partner in the late 70s (parents said no), and I remember my mind being blown when watching them. I also love watching you guys, and Davis/White when they were skating.
Virtue @ Moir are the best in their era BUT surely there is only one team that can be described as the ‘best ever’, & that’s Torvill & Dean!! ‘Bolero’ ‘Mack & Mabel’ ‘Barnum’ etc, just makes my spine tingle.

It is just so charming, beautiful, amazing (insert more adjectives) to hear Scott compliment Tessa, giving her credit for their sucess. But we all know it takes TWO!! They were meant to not only skate together but to BE together!! Torville and Dean were/are the BEST ice dancers ever! They were the first to use their body's as "props". Doing many lifts and close encounters winding their body's around each other. The King and Queen of ice dancing!

Torvill and Dean always! Innovative, brave and emotional! They brought in new fans of the sport across the globe; everyone knows their names even now! Chris Deans choreography was ground breaking! The world of skating had never seen anything like it! Pure magic!

Sharon here: Let us not forget Davis and White, either. I remember well Scott Moir's poor sportsmanship after Meryl and Charlie won the gold in 2014. I didn't see that from them when Virtue and Moir won in 2010. They just got to work and aced competition after competition until they were ready to go for the gold, and attain it. I loved Virtue and Moir before the 2014 display of temper, excuses, and claims of favoritism from their coaches. I still respect their ability, if not his character.

I'm fond of ice skating championships and follow it since the 1980's. There is only one pair up till now that is the utmost best of all times and they are Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. They are already in their sixties, but still the best in Dancing on Ice, which they started with later in their life. They were asked to consider joining Dancing on Ice when the programme started. They are also training new ice skaters. There are hundreds and hundreds of their ice skating videos on CZcams. Chris is the best choreographer ever and as Professionals later in life, did their own way of skating and not according to the rules of the oldfashioned system. They are heroes in their own way and I am glad to live in the same era as they do. What a privilege to watch them skating. May God bless them always 🙏🙏🙏
Torvill and Dean were/are/ will always be a step above everyone else. No one else has ever come close to the sheer perfection of them.

I respect your opinion and see these two as mind-blowing beautiful with their graceful lines and gorgeous synchronisation.
Alias I am of the opinion that T&D were just something beyond special and their ice dances leading up to Bolero was just something never seen before by any other ice dancers in their creative and imagery. That their original set pattern dance was as popular for many to watch as their Bolero when the original set pattern dance was considered a bit boring because of the repeating of the same set three times and yet they created a dance that has such an amazing build up. Oh yes they (along with Betty) were pretty much out of this world.
Given the statement you made with your heading for this video, it should come as no surprise that many would comes to voice their disagreement in the comment section

I am convinced that Virtue and Moir surpassed Torvill and Dean on the All-Star Podium. However, I am a fan of the English couple who in my eyes are geniuses of this discipline, not only in the bolero. They have a great bond, a perfect mimicry of gestures, attitudes and postures, an absolute synchronization rarely equaled. They also have great elegance, neat and sophisticated choreography AND this very British humor that makes them sparkling. An irreproachable technique. In short a golden couple and a legendary pair. There is no possibility of competition between these 2 couples, we can just compare and admire them, so much time and generations separate them, but they also have so much in common. Starting with all the exceptional qualities that I have just mentioned.
No one can deny that Torvill and Dean brilliantly surpassed anything that has existed in ice dancing before them, they brought excellence, originality and tecnical perfection. In this regard Ravel's bolero is iconic and unforgettable. That being said, it should still be noted that the standards of ice dancing have evolved a lot since then.
Ice dancing has become more lively, more expressive and more risky. Ravel's bolero despite its incomparable and remarkable artistic interpretation does not meet the current achievements and necessary figures, he's performed slowly, some choreographic elements are repetitive...
If some people think Torvill and Dean are the best ever, that's okay, it's a matter of opinion, everyone has their own feelings.
However, one can object that they did'nt skate at the current level of difficulty. Virtue and Moir have an exceptionally long career at the top and outperform all skaters of all disciplines and all times with an unmatched number of gold medals, this is a criterion of objectivity.
In my opinion Virtue and Moir are the most exceptional and accomplished skaters of all time on a technical and artistic level because they also have a charisma and an alchemy that far exceeds the expressiveness of Torvill and Dean.

I was watching recently some of Torvill and Dean more recent performances (yeah, they still perform and they are delightful to watch) and occurred to me the Torvill and Dean are the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of ice dance: musical, playful and elegant. Virtue and Moir are the Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse of ice dancing: as musical, but athletic, balletic and smoking hot. Personally, I always had a preference for Gene and Cyd, all the while admiring Fred and Ginger. I say the same here: I love the intensity of Virtue and Moir, but also delight with the lightness and clever choreography of Torvil and Dean.
I’d suggest that you watch ALL of Torvill and Dean’s work, because I don’t think you have. To suggest that T&D didn’t skate at the current level of difficulty is an outrageous thing to say. T&D were the absolute innovators of Ice Dancing. Nobody matched them for their exceptional skill, there charisma, their expressiveness in everything they did. Even their comedy routines made us laugh, they were clever and fun and always timed to perfection. You mentioned that their incomparable, remarkable artistic interpretation of Bolero does not meet current achievements and necessary figures? Take a look at the story they were telling. Torvill and dean’s Paso Doble was yet another fabulous performance. Their interpretation of a proud bullfighter and his cape, amazing. You do say that ‘If some people think that Torvill and Dean are the best ever, that’s ok, and it is a matter of opinion’, true. Then you immediately tear them and their work down to reiterate that Virtue and Moir’s charisma and expressiveness far exceeds Torvill and Dean. Wow ! Ending your comments with a slap in the face. So far ahead of their time, so continually innovative for so many years after achieving Olympic greatness, helping so many young skaters grow into their own great styles through coaching and fabulous choreography. They are good but there is only ONE Torvill & Dean . T&D took ice dance from amateur to professional redefining the level of artistic and technical elements that no one had done before. They defined the phrase “The Relaxness of Perfect Practice”

I'm 85 yrs. old, yet they are my favorite ice skaters. I never skip their performance whether if it is in the olymphics or the yearly competitions. Sad they were not become to be couples in real life. Bless them in their lives today. I will love to see the expression in your eyes as you perform. From the Philippines.

I have not yet seen a couple ice dance better than Torvill and Dean. They are the epitome of the best of the best🤗🤗💕.
I loved watching T&D when I was growing up. I looked forward to seeing each new step, style, sequence or lift. Technically perfect, they re-wrote the book and re-defined the sport.
What's different about these two teams is the electricity. T&D is like a good brother/sister duo; Comfortable.
V&M are magical. The connection is tangible. I was shocked to find out they are not a couple.
When you have two teams, different in style, but equal in talent, it comes down to how they make you feel.
For me, maybe its because I am Canadian, or because proper British people don't show emotions as openly, but its this one and only thing that puts V&M at the top of the list.
