To me, everything about this level feels perfect, from the game design, to the gimmicks, to the music and SFX choice, to the decoration and unobtrusive background story. If you're just looking to grind stars, turn away. But if you want to go on a journey, I highly recommend that you try this experience out for yourself.

What exactly does the red key open?

As far as I could tell, the only thing that happens is that a door opens in a hidden section in the room directly above. If you go through the door you end up on the opposite side of the level. I think it's just a quicker path you can take, useful for exploring ig. Zejoant doesn't even pick up the key in his official completion.
