    Top 5 mistakes:
    1. Not clarifying (You can get build up so have to clarify every 3 weeks with SLS)
    2. Co-washing (You will get build up if you co wash every time. Use this schedule: co wash, co wash, lo poo etc. As I am coconut co wash is advised)
    3. Deep conditioning (Use it! Time and quality product! At least 30 minutes. Add oil or honey to make a conditioner a deep conditioner. Use shower cap and hot hat.)
    4. Raking in products (denman brush does not work for waves. Use super soaker method and smoothing and scrunching)
    5. Skipping gel. (Expecting hold from wrong products. Use gel in your wet hair! Key to happiness!)

      I agree, I thought the hair had more bounce to it. It looked lovely! When I was testing out stylers, I always liked creams over gels because they didn’t restrict my hair’s movement. Anything that made my hair crunch made me cringe lol. The only downside to creams is in my case, they’re way heavier. My hair looks fantastic on day one, and then incredibly greasy on day two. Sometimes with certain products, you just feel them on your hair. Bleh.

      I think she means instead of shampooing EVERYDAY (because while clarifying is important, shampoo every single day isnt healthy) and to just do the cowashing sometimes when you are showering, but your hair doesnt need to be washed. Im sure this doesn't work for well for absolutely everybody, unless you find ingredients that help control sebem, other specific issues. There is a company that is all healthy with no additives and you pick all the ingredients and choose everything from the base being made for oily/dry/normal/combination to the soecific ingredients. Tana M. just did a video on them.. Worth a shot! They also do cleanser, lotion, and shampoo. Worth a shot! They arw called mixems or mix ins.. Mix something lol sorry I forget!

    Thank you so much. I'm a 2b, and the CG method isn't working for my waves. Now I know why!

  • @Tempestuu
    @Tempestuu Před 6 lety +93

    I've never liked deep conditioning, and I'm saying that as someone with naturally very thick hair.
    Just switching from the sulfate+silicone death cycle to actual "CG-friendly" products and using a gel helped almost entirely. Could I use a little more moisture? Sure. But I'm a very wash-and-wear kind of person. Squish to condish/scrunching and just plopping and airdrying can be a trial on my patience as it is.
    I'm not going to apply a treatment or more moisture products every now and then just to get like 2% softer hair when lets be honest, it's fine as it is.
    I think a real mistake a lot of wavies have, and as much as I love you and your vids I've noticed it - Using too many products. We're wavies, and in your case a seemingly lower-density, thin hair strand wavy. Adding more than a light leave in (or just leaving in some of the regular condit) and gel is honestly too much for the hair IMO. Keep it simple.
    Oh, and of course using the wrong products which I can 100% say I'm guilty of. When I first started with a dedicated leave in, I was using the OGX shea soft and smooth leave-in (their only silicone-free line) and as nice as it smelled and as beneficial as I **thought** it'd be, it weighed down my hair like hell, because it's a thick-ish cream product that even just emulsifying it didn't solve. I prefer to use much more light weight leave-ins now and I get the moisture but keep my wave pattern and have softer and fluffier hair because of it. The creamier, denser products are more for the 2C and 3A+ girls.
    Also completely randomly, but Australia sucks when it comes to products, honestly. They're hella expensive from the get go, but even ignoring that there is absolutely NO range when it comes to Cg-friendly products. It's really disheartening.

      @alysonlupo  Před 6 lety +8

      I LOVE YOUR COMMENT SO MUCH! I’m in the midst of exploring much simpler product options (no layering, but that may change when the heat of summer hits-we’ll see) and routines, and embracing the less than abso-freaking-lutely perfect hair days. What are your fave standalone products? And I sorry about the lack of CG options where you are. Are you familiar with the Neel Loves Curls salon? Anywhere close to you?

    • @Tempestuu
      @Tempestuu Před 6 lety +3

      I only really have 1 standalone product, which is my gel. For shampoo + conditioner I've used the OGX Shea soft and smooth line (only sulphate+silicone free line by them), and instead of using a traditional leave in I just use a sparing amount of conditioner as my leave in. It's quite light weight for my hair, but I also have naturally thick hair so for finer hair it might weigh down the wave pattern.
      For gels I've only used 1 since starting the CG method, and that's the Taft Mega Styling Gel by Schwarzkopf. It dries beautifully (crunchy of course, but no flakes and no weird tackiness) and was a suggested/favourite item from an Aussie content creator (HairRomance, I highly suggest her!).
      I've tried the conditioner and shampoos by Sukin since they're also sulphate and silicone free but haven't used them long enough to make a fair assessment yet.

I remember when I started I thought I'd never get it! I'm on the same 2 wash cowash, 3rd wash lo-poo and it works for me. Don't be surprised (but don't be disappointed if not) if your curl pattern changes. I started as a wavy 2a-2b and I am now a 2c-3a botticelli curly. Go figure. One more thing I learned about my curls is if I use a leave in before my gel, I don't get nearly the definition as when I skip it. And yes, a Denman would WRECK me. Ha.

      On wash day I cowash or shampoo, then condition while I'm washing/shaving/etc, squish/rinse conditioner out. Apply curl creme (I like Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion), squeeze out water with a tshirt and apply a curl enhancer (top two favs Mop Top Curl Custard or Dippiry Doo Girls w/Curls Curl Mousse and then top off with Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. It leaves the hardest cast I have found and keeps my curls happy for second and sometimes 3rd day hair. Hope that helps!

      It does help! Thank you! I know this is a silly question, but what exactly does a curl cream do that the curl enhancer and gel don't do? I'm new to this, so I'm still trying to figure out what each thing does. I understand the importance of gel and curl enhancer, just not the cream.

    I have a few questions about deep conditioning. I’m having a hard time differentiating what’s a mask and what’s a deep conditioner. Is there even a difference between the two? I use the deva curl deep sea repair mask every third wash and I apply it after lopoo and before conditioner. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to use conditioner after that or is that supposed to replace my conditioner. Does the deep sea repair mask count as a “deep conditioner” or should I invest in a different product for that purpose. I find that my hair lacks moister 99% of the time.

    Problems:
    My long hair tangles A. LOT. I have to find a way to detangle it without having to wet or condition it every day. I tried not brushing it for 3 days and I almost spent thirty minutes with conditioner SOAKED hair to detangle it. :(

I struggled for over 2 years to make co-washing work for me, but I constantly felt gunky and gross. And my very fragile curls would hang limp and lifeless. Finally, I decided to go back to shampoo (coincidentally, I also use the Suave Daily Clarifying) and I'm much happier. I got so wrapped up in the pursuit of 'flawless curls' that I wasn't listening to my hair. For me, protein is key, and less moisture is more. I haven't used a leave-in conditioner in ages.

So now I shampoo my scalp once a week, the length of my hair as needed, every few weeks or so. I only condition the ends of my hair. Then I use just a pea sized amount of AG Recoil on soaking wet hair, followed by a bit of Ultra Defining gel. Plop for 10 minutes and diffuse. Works great for me. Good luck on your journey!

    Hey, RL+CG, this is the first video of yours that I've stumbled onto, and I am stoked! I'm a lifelong 2c/3a (pronounced waves and loose banana curls [those dreads aren't mine, in the profile pic; that's a wig], which frustratingly grew in all different directions that just looked untidy) who struggled in my teens to get that perfect late nineties to early naughties pin-straight *flat* hair, with eternal vexation.
    Then I spent much of my 20s with it tied, or up, or back, or hidden under hats, or tortured with ceramic plates...and then in very late 2011 I made the momentous decision to go (natural ash blonde, but at that time dyed black), after a planned buzzcut, to pure snowcap white (tending almost bluish in light, so absolutely *zero* blonde), once my hair reached pixie length. And then I just maintained that, with monthly touch-ups, as it grew. And grew. And grew.
    And suddenly, it was just over five years later, my hair was to my mid-back and somehow, through some miracle of genetics, holding the line of remaining crystal-shimmery, voluminous and bouncy, despite that monthly CAK (Crime Against Keratin), when something occurred to me. Maybe, just maybe, if I wanted to show my true gratitude to the hair gods for their blessings upon my head (literally), might it not be a prudent idea to quit while I was ahead (henh, I have loads of these) and possibly stop heaping the extra insult of "distress" styling - mostly composed of the heat aggressors such as blow-outs, at which I was not very good; straightening with irons, at which I was considerably better; and harnessing the power of my natural texture but simply up-dialed, with heated rollers, at which I was perhaps even adept...plus oversprayed/sugar-watered backcombing and teasing into dramatic birdsnest dimensions, with its inevitable consequent epic and traumatic detangling, *or* paddle-brush tension-flattening - to that not-inconsiderable *constant* injury of the 40vol bleaching once a month, every time I wanted to go out of an evening.
    Slowly, it dawned on me, to my great chagrin, that though I had been preternaturally fortunate thus far, my hair now being so long meant that I had a lot more at stake than before, and I had to face facts; if I wanted to *keep* it looking lush, then either the daily stress of working against my natural texture had to go, or I needed to choose another colour. And like Hell was I giving up the frosty silver that has become my trademark, so I regretfully resigned myself to the reality that I was going to need to learn how to live at peace with the mess that was native to the top of my head.
    That was only a couple of months back, and since then, I have been trying every trick known to try to either harness the chaos by at least trying to coax all my movement to march somewhat in time (cage-clip granny rollers, foam sleeping granny rollers, pin-curls, buns [whether single, double, or multiple by sections], bread-tie wire twists, plaits, twin-strand ropes, you name it; the only thing I haven't tried so far is those stick-and-tube CurlFormers spiral curlers, and that's only because they cost a small fortune for the original, quality, branded ones), or to convince my hair it doesn't need heat to decide to be straight (which mostly consisted of just roller-brushing it in sections, over and over, for literal hours while it air-dried after washing). It was all so. much. work! and I was at my wit's end, when a friend suggested I go back to my roots (seriously, I'm here all week), by trying Curly Girl to just line up my ducks and then...leave it to God.
    So I have been researching like a fiend these last few weeks, but despite most articles and product lists and editiorials talking about wavy hair alongside the tighter curl patterns, I haven't seen much *dedicated* information that was actually useful for me - until you!
    If you got this far, good for you! All of the War And Peace -length novel above was a very long way of saying. *thank you!!!* I have subscribed, I have turned on the bell, and I am about to go trawl all your other videos for more information that is relevant to my experience. I feel like I actually have a chance to make this thing work, with your help. So take me by the hand and lead me down the road, here, RL+CG - I'm excited to have your guidance as I start out on my Curly Girl journey. You came along right as I was starting to get discouraged, and you may well have saved my hair, so thanks so much.

    Last August, I found this CGM support group from the Philippines and they just inspired me to follow this seemingly intimidating routine. But, I started doing CGM last September anyways. Haha
    I watched this again now and I got more tips to take care of my waves properly. Thank you. You're one of those that inspired me to continue loving my hair 💕

    This video saved my sanity. I started the curly girl method not to be wavy or curly - I was sure my hair was straight - but to be nicer to my hair. You know where this is headed. As soon as I stopped torturing my hair, some waves appeared. Frizzy, unruly waves, but still. Waves? Me?! I started to experiment with the products I already had on hand, thinking I just needed new techniques. But all I got were frizzy, stringy waves. This video convinced me to finally buy some gel. Jessicurl Spiralicious is the magical potion I chose, thanks to your product review. I scrunched out my first crunch yesterday and voila! Big, beautiful waves! Thank you!

    First time growing my hair long, 1 year in! Even when my hair was short, I avoided sulphates like the plague and used very oily pomades, I can’t imagine the buildup I had. Introduced sulphate shampoo a few weeks ago back into the regimen and it was a game changer. Thanks for helping us dudes out 😎

    Thank you!! Today read just a few articles so far and a couple videos (some of which were by you) on Curly Girl Method, especially for wavies (found out today I'm 2A fine), started experimenting a bit, and already learning so much and seeing changes and getting idea what to buy. I always feel much more myself when the wave of my hair comes out so I wanna encourage it plus finally take the time to improve some issues it's had a long time with static and dry breakage. Have used no products or dye on it over 6 years and months at a time with no shampoo or conditioner. That was a cool sorta "cleanse" and natural, minimalist, money-saving, time-saving, true, but there are benefits of good products so I'm open and drawn to try some new things as part of a fun makeover, such as making flaxseed gel and looking into low-toxic hair salon. Mind-blowing how much valuable information on practically any topic is available online these days! I super appreciate people taking time to educate on their passions and helps inspire me to start an educational CZcams channel (on holistic wellness and trauma recovery), hopefully this summer! Related to that is this topic of having fun accentuating our authentic beauty such as hair type!

    This one time, when I moved to Tennessee, it was HUMID. I had so much-free range sebum- that didn’t want to move out. I tried shampoos everything. My hair got stringy and was greasy looking.(because it was)
    Then... I used DAWN blue dish soap.
    Got it out

    Girl you are the first person to give me the tips I've been looking for... been trying to find someone who has my type of hair for the last week and a half of obsessively watching curly girl videos,, and was just guessing at what products might work for my hair since it's slightly less curly and thick than the girls in most of the videos.. Thank you for being specific and clear and laying out your routine in a way that's replicable (especially in your article). Thank you!!

      Update: I got the As I Am Cowash and it's a game changer!!! Best hair day I've ever had. The DevaCurl Volumizing Foam is not doing it for me at all though... it feels drying and it disrupts my natural wave pattern when I scrunch - just gives me a fake scrunched curl look. Looking for a new volumizing foam, considering the Fekkai Full Blown Volume Styling Whip - have you tried that?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  Před 6 lety

      I'm willing to bet it's full of silicones since it's Fekkai, so no, I haven't tried it. Maybe the As I Am curling jelly would be a good one for you? Deva Wavemaker maybe. Or if foams are your thing, Innersense and Zerran both make great ones! Oh, and Jessicurl Spiralicious is just a fantastic all-in-one product - cream, enhancer, gel. A few suggestions for ya!

    As i'm starting my cg method 1 month ago, my biggest mistake is not complete eliminating silicone and completely eliminating sulfates, now after a month i did my final wash using a dishwashing liquid (yep i did it, i just think of it as a shampoo tho) so after that i deep condition after that final wash my hair feels lighther although no defined waves i just feel my hair being clean. After that i just stop using my alcohol based gel and a curling lotion with dimethicone, now i really can say that as a wavy haired we can't completely eliminate shampoos or probably sulfates on our hair care routine we just need to use them more wisely right now, probably ince after 1 month or 2 weeks will help. Anyways listen to your hair and read labels.

    As a new believer, I have learned so much from the many, many CG videos out there. But I have learned the most from you! My hair is similar to yours (but I am 66 years old and my hair is a bit curlier, totally silver and cut in a chin-length layered bob). The #1 mistake that I have made so far is spending way, way too much money on products. I must have accumulated in the past month of experimentation over $350 of potions and lotions. Most that I really will never use again (mainly because they are so highly fragranced). Odd, but I am finding that I do best with some of the inexpensive lines, such as As I AM and Cantu. I wish that I could simplify and start all over again.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  Před 6 lety

      If you live in the US, you can likely return all of those impulse buys, and I strongly urge you to do so. Keep the ones you love, return the rest. Simplicity is key!
