Welcome back to Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers! Join our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon as they redefine the stereotypical teacher, are they really a tweed-jacket-wearing bookworm, or are they much more? What’s the worst way to spend your morning? The answer is usually having to attend a staff meeting with admin. Finally, don't miss the top best ways to irritate any teacher in 3 seconds!
We all know that sometimes students can get on a teacher's nerves, but what if we told you the people who irritate teachers the easiest are actually other teachers! From bragging about test scores to back-handed compliments, us teachers can really get on each others nerves, and we're going to talk about the worse ones!
This week, we’re going to debunk the stereotypes of teachers and dive into what really happens when the bell rings. Some people call teachers lazy and tired, but let us give you a peek behind the curtain and show off that it's simply not true (because we're not lazy at least).
Someone give us a Nobel Prize! We found the cure to insomnia… Our morning staff meetings! There is nothing worse than trying to stay awake in a never ending admin meeting, it truly bores us to tears. These meetings seem to drag on for so long, almost as long as grading papers.

Birmingham: I think the worst part is that the school district had made improvements. They went from a D to a C. No, a C is not good but they should have been praised for improving and then they would have been motivated for continuing to improve. Like Devin said, there is a teacher shortage. You shouldn’t insult the ones who are already there. You would just end of filling their vacant positions with long term subs.
EVERY profession has the company tattle tale. Some people never grow up.

Elementary teachers have 24 students but you teach multiple subjects and have to grade assignments for each subject. It’s still too much grading in elementary.

In MA, where I did my first 3 years of teaching it was preschool-8th grade. I was in charge of organizing the graduation ceremony and dinner. I looped with one group from 6-8. When that group graduated, my principal and I both moved on.
I went to Catholic school K-8 and we did not have any type of ceremony.
I currently teach at a 6th-8th middle school and the kids have a barbecue and a semi-formal dance, but no graduation.

First grade teacher here. I started doing Valentine box creations at school years ago. I still have several parents a year thanking me for not making them something off of Pinterest. I think maybe there’s one or two that are disappointed. They don’t get to make some creation, but the restare good with just doing the other projects during the year that have more learning involved. Our boxes are really cute and very useful.

I teach first grade and we have been doing hundredth day celebrations for about 30 years. It’s definitely not a new thing. I think it really evolved from kinder and first grade be able to count successfully and use numbers within 100.

my sons school did the 100 days of school. They also did a 101 day of school where all the kids put black dots on a white shirt and were dalmatians while the principal was Cruella

Kindergartner graduation is a little silly, but I think they do it just because they want to make parents sentimental and probably help the kids feel proud of themselves so they hopefully have some intrinsic motivation later. I still have a picture of me in a cap and gown from kindergarten, and I look at it when I want to quit teacher school😂😂 it motivates me to actually make it to college graduation so when my day finally comes I can take a picture holding that photo of me.

those specific questions in meetings always infuriated me and I'm not even a teacher. I've had meetings where people were all like "what about my pension", or "what about this very specific problem that only I'm having". That's for one on one time, not for holding up our group meeting time. And in my case, this was during the Blackberry era, so I couldn't even do much on my phone while people ranted about unrelated issues.

    Unique excuse:
1st grader who singed his own discipline note at home.
“Well, you see, umm, well, uh, yeah, ya know, you see….my parents’ wrists were tired last night so I helped them by signing this for them.”
23 years in first grade. That was a new one!

Some schools for the 100th Day even have the Kindergarten class dress up like they're 100 years old.

I’ve done preschool graduation. There’s some truth to families going all out for preschool graduation because it may be the only graduation they will see.
