A lot of people hate Simon, but he's good at what he does. Watch him when he listens to people. He turns an ear to them, he looks extremely thoughtful. He's listening in ways that most people can't comprehend. He could tell that that girl had potential that went far beyond a choice in song they didn't think suited her. It's honestly quite remarkable to watch, in a weird way.

Yeah, the "New Yor" was problematic. Had she worked with a coach, they would have taught her to how hit that "K" quickly and with precision...without closing down the throat too much and squashing the note.

Yes, of course you are right, Nicole would only object for professional reasons, for the good of the show and the singer. That being said, as a non-singer, I did not understand why Nicole said "This is hard for me", or why anyone would hesitate to approve this girl. Because certain songs just don't work for certain people it doesn't matter how many times we have heard a song. The fact is that they are trying to hear her voice, not the song. If that makes sense.

An exceedingly beautiful young woman with massive talent.
Anyone remember that kid from that Halloween interview, "I like turtles." lololol
The issue was not the song choice mostly. She picked up some bad habits that are evident in singers like Jessica Simpson and Fergie. She has a tendency to lower her larynx to create an artificial, mature and large sound, which naturally she doesn't possess at her age, especially in the lower notes when she just goes into her full chest voice. For example, at 2:05 she lowers her larynx, which is the typical thing singers like Christina Aguilera and Carrie Underwood do to kinda sound large and rich as Whitney Houston. Then at 2:10 you hear the unsmooth passagio (transition between vocal registers) where she goes into her mix voice for her belting register. She kinda doesn't mix well either since there is a slight throatiness in her belts, implicating that she might be incorporating too much chest into her mix instead of using a headier mix that requires softening the palate. She also repeatedly keeps pulling down on her throat to maintain that big mature sound throughout the entire song, which I think is a result of her convincing herself that that sound is her natural voice, which clearly isn't. She is talented for her age (stayed in tune throughout most of the song), and, still young, so she still has a lot of time to learn and improve. Just hope she breaks this habit, as it could do premature damage to her voice, which is still developing (she's only 16). Either way, I would put her through, but have a real coach (not Simon, Louis, or Sharon) direct her singing and song choices. Alicia Keys is a mezzo and she, herself, struggles belting properly in her songs such as this one. She strains a lot, maybe a stylistic choice, because she is not a fully trained and seasoned vocalist. This girl is still young, so she might have more comfort in the soprano range, though it needs work. I agree though that she needs to sing in a lighter voice.
Wow! You know your stuff. As a vocalist I agree with everything you said but I never would have been able to articulate it as well. Alicia Keys really struggles on those belting high notes all the time. It irritates me. This young lady doesn't have a voice for the style she's trying to present. Those low tones were unsteady and the belting didn't work for me either. She's got something, it just needs to be guided and developed.

The notes are, though, but honestly, you have to have the right voice. Not every song out there is suitable for an artist. But they appreciate it more whenever you turn a regular song into an original so it doesn't sound karaoke.
