  • Leo Kennedy is the author of Black Snake: The Real Story of Ned Kelly.
This well-researched book tells the truth about who the Kelly Gang really were and what they did. This is an important point for Leo as he is the descendant of Sergeant Micheal Kennedy, a police officer murdered by Ned Kelly.
Leo is also a member of the Blue Ribbon Foundation which supports police families of those killed in the line of duty.
Leo Kennedy was going to be a key note speaker at our 2020 District Conference before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Leo has generously given his address in this webinar recorded on 18 June 2020.

I took the book 'Black Snake' out on loan from the Beechworth Library. The Library is across the road from the very Courthouse where both Ned and Ellen Kelly stood trial.
It is clear that Ned Kelly was a murderer, a hostage taker, a horse thief, a burglar, a bank robber and a nuisance to society. It does annoy me that some view him as some type of a hero. The book is a compelling read. It sticks to fact. I can only feel empathy for police members and their families as they endured the ultimate sacrifice for protecting the community. Thank you for writing this book.

I have a question- what happened to Kennedy's horse? Did it come back to Mansfield?

Other good books I can recommend are "The Kelly gang unmasked "by Ian MacFarlane and "Bushrangers heroes or villains" by Edgar Penzig, both excellent publications. I have lent my copy of "Black snake" to our local history teacher where I live in Wales.
