  • Exciting developments as we transform an abandoned water cistern in the chateau grounds into a fantastic greenhouse. This week we build cold frames and lay a new floor, plus work on the metal windows.
We live in a medieval castle with a huge, derelict estate in southern France. Follow our ambitious garden projects, from vineyards to formal gardens, tropical plants to self-sustainability. Our project is enormous and our enthusiasm contagious. We'd love you to join us.

This greenhouse will live on for several hundred years! Very well done! Love the color of the metal framing as well! The children talking to each other thru the orange tubing....precious! A small fridge with beer.....the icing on the cake! Cheers!

I don't think I've ever seen Marc so happy! "...my potting shed...." Cheeky! It's lovely to see that big smile! So sorry that you lost your pottery studio, Amy, but you might prefer a better-lit, warmer/cooler studio, though. I hope it comes soon for you. The green house looks fantastic! (I always love the green of the window frames: and very practical, which I love. Clemente has a delicious french accent and Juliette looks like she's going to be a mover & shaker like her mom!! Thank you for another super-delightful post.

I have so many questions for Marc! I'd love to be able to just sit and talk to both of you for hours... Some questions: What is the climate/micro climate where you live? I know you said it is dry; how many months a year is it cold (under 16c/60f) and when do you consider the growing season dates? Is there an optimal distance from the ground to the cold frame? Is there a nearby water source for the cistern? I assume so, or it wouldn't be where it is! How many springs have you found on your property and is all the water tested to be drinkable? Does Marc plan to place the Victorian greenhouse near a spring? Will you ever tell us about the other structures on the property, what they were used for, when they were last used, when they were built, and your master plan for renovating them? Will they have their own water supplies? Do you have an overall strategic plan for the next 5-10 years for the garden and property? Finally, if you ever decide you don't want those precious, gorgeous babies, can I swap them for a couple of trained Cattle Dogs 🐕🐕😘

The splendid Crystal Palace, the brainchild of an earlier incarnation of Marc, the Prince Consort, was built for the 1851 Exhibition and is well known. Much less well known is the equally splendid glasshouse built at La Petite Malmaison for the Empress Joséphine where she acclimated species brought to France from around the world. The actual villa to which her great glasshouse was attached still stands in a gated neighborhood a few hundred meters from the château de Malmaison, but the glasshouse was disassembled a few years after her death.

I saw your comments re your soil when you visited Stephanie Jarvis at her Chateau.
You need to start a big enclosed (rectangle minimum size 8 feet x 8 feet) - use metal open metal frames (open so the air can get to all sides) to hold compost together.
Make sure you pull it out once a month and then reconstitute it again each month with additions
Things to add to your compost each month:
    1. a layer of freshly cut grass (cut that day) = layer about an inch
    2. a layer of scrunched up brown paper and tissue paper = later about an inch (NO NO NO = NO newspaper)
    3. a layer of sheep manure (fresh) but (NO NO NO = NO cow manure - it just become rubbish) and NO to chicken manure - it is too strong)
4A. a 2 inch layer of PEA STRAW - (left over after farmers harvest their peas)
4B. In season, INSTEAD of PEA straw - use a 2 inch layer of newly fallen OAK leaves = that is the ONLY tree I recommend instead of pea straw
    5. occasionally if you can obtain it - a small layer of volcanic dust
Create those (up to) 5 layers THREE TIMES - once a month each time - EVERY MONTH
by pulling it apart once a month and adding more of the above it composts much faster
the final product will delight your garden and allow you to grow better vegetables and fruit.
ONCE your compost heap is about 5 feet high you can start to remove about 2 big wheel barrow loads to mulch different parts of the garden BEFORE you start pulling it apart to reconstitute it for the month
    regards
    Anna

Question for Marc.I have major greenhouse envy. I’m working on a project for a standing box 4’ wide by 6’ tall, the shelves angle down towards the front. I want to start the seeds here. It will sit on a concrete patio, should I worry about insulating the base? This is going to sit under a polycarbonate roof, south facing against a brick wall. Glass doors and sides and back PC sheets.

Question / suggestion: I'd love to know more about the hot beds used by Victorian era gardeners to grow melons etc. I think they banked a pile of manure, under soil, which would give off heat as it breaks down? Not sure if that's what I saw in the drawing at 1:42, in the lower section, but the details I'm wondering about are: do people still use this? How much soil is necessary to make a safe food crop grow up above? Does the pile need aeration, turning, layers of green / brown, etc, like conventional compost, or is it more like the nice heat given off by a big pile of horse manure that I remember in my childhood horse-ranch winters? And lastly, is it as eco-friendly as it sounds?

You only need a rebar grill if you need it to be reinforced. Here there was already a concrete floor - it was just to level it out. And it would only have pedestrian passage on it. So no reinforcement necessary.

The greenhouse will not be big enough even it was 20 times bigger it still would have too small an area. Never get interested in cacti and succulents or it will take over your whole garden.
